Sheikh Saadi reaches the pinnacle of mystical “Malamatiyya,” where he demolishes the idol of “reputation” and “outward actions” to establish the station of pure “neediness” before God. It is a call to abandon the embellishment of appearances with false piety and to acknowledge utter bankruptcy before the riches of the Almighty.
English Translation
Finally, the devout worshiper found his way to (the ruins, outwardly a place of debauchery, but for the worshiper a place to rid himself of attachment to the world). Where he spent all that he had saved from his life’s savings on outward acts of obedience, only to offer it as a sacrifice to a feast of ecstasy in a single moment of sincerity.
So I fear for you, O man of good reputation, that your foot may stumble on the stone of pretense (you will be exposed before creation, when you come to ruins, for they are places of debauchery before creation); So come together and bring forth the hidden jewel of your secret, so that we may drink the cup of truth openly, far from the flattery of creation.
For going to the gathering place on the Day of Resurrection without heavy burdens of (pretended deeds) is better for us than being afflicted with shame and disgrace when those vessels (the heavy burdens) are opened, and we find nothing but dust inside.
For all that contrived prestige and clamor of outward piety is nothing but counterfeit coins (pure pretense and falsehood). Its exterior is gilded with tainted gold, while its essence lacks even the most basic standards of truth and true value.
And on the Day of the Great Presentation before God, when people will offer their goods of obedience and good deeds before the Creator, what will we possibly bring before the Generous One? We have nothing to offer but our utter dependence.
For things are not achieved through human planning, nor is Divine favor attained through displays of power. Sovereignty and prestige are gifts from that sacred realm (God Almighty), bestowed by Him upon whomever He chooses through His grace, not by the merit of the servant.
How many hermitages, once places of seclusion where those who wore wool would retreat, have been reduced to utter ruins (places of true depravity) destined for oblivion! And how many libraries of formal learning have become gathering places for those drowning in drunkenness (drowning in outward asceticism)!
Indeed, the ascetic who merely speaks with his tongue has not grasped the treasure of true meaning through mere abundance. His incessant chatter led him astray, preventing him from finding the right path amidst the darkness. He couldn’t see the moon (the truth) because of the dust of his illusions, stirred up by his outward, useless asceticism.
O Enchanter of the Soul, sing this refreshing melody for the heart! O Cupbearer of Truth, bestow upon us that cup that comforts hearts and wipes away the worries of existence!
For even if the whole world were to devote itself to finding fault with us and condemning us, it would be of no consequence. For he whose heart is attached to the One and Only (God), the reproach of thousands will not disturb the purity of his heart.
So, Saadi, if your hands fall short of attaining perfection in this world, then at least leave behind a good reputation that will remain a testament to the sincerity of your devotion after your departure.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Ruins (Tavern) and the Hermitage (Place of the Devout Ascetic): Sheikh Saadi turns the tables; The hermitage (the official symbol of asceticism) may be a veil due to the worshiper’s self-admiration, while ruins are the place where this reputation is shattered and the sincerity of neediness is revealed.
Counterfeit coins (the dirham of Nasirah): a striking metaphor for hypocrisy. People see the “plate” (the apparent gold), but God weighs the “essence,” and work without sincerity has no weight in the scales of the Almighty.
The merchandise of neediness: On the “Day of Judgment,” the righteous advance with their deeds, while the knower advances with his “non-being.” Because seeing one’s own deeds is idolatry, while relying on the mercy of the Most Generous, the Most High, is pure monotheism.
The Dust of Desire: Sufis believe that the Truth (the moon) is always present, but the “dust” of greed and the commanding self is what obscures the vision. Purification (Sufism) is the extinguishing of this dust.
This Sermon means:
The perfection of servitude lies in discarding the pretense of righteousness and rising above pride in outward actions in pursuit of attaining the station of true dependence on God. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it demolishes the veils of hypocrisy and seeking praise, and guides the seeker to see the sole Cause of Causes (God), affirming that the merchandise of the brokenhearted is the most precious in the marketplace of the Day of Resurrection, and that intimacy with the Almighty God suffices the believer, rendering him indifferent to the blame or praise of creation.
