This Ghazal represents the epic of “The Station of Bewilderment and the State of Poverty”; Where Sheikh Kamal, with his mystical insight, depicts the scene of the sacred gathering in which worldly ranks are erased, so that the Shah and the Dervish become equal, proclaiming that the essence of love is burning like incense so that the fragrance of truth may emanate.
English Translation
What a glorious gathering, this paradise, this sublime station in which we are, where eternal life is revealed in the countenance of The cupbearer (the Beloved), and in the brim of the cup overflowing with light.
For the happiness that has eluded all of God’s creation has not crossed this blessed threshold, and all the joy that has vanished from hearts now dwells here, forever in our place, in our gathering.
So when you behold your face (enter upon us), the house of our joy and delight, bearing the burdens of the soul and the sorrow of the heart, will cry out to you, all the seekers (the Sufis gathered together): Cast aside your sorrow, for sorrow here, in this sanctuary, is an abomination, a work of Satan, and is forbidden.
For we are those who have ascended above the highest heavens (our souls have transcended the limits of the physical body, as if they swam beyond this universe in the sea of the Beloved, dissolving completely); If you wish to depart from our vicinity, let your steps be very quiet, for you walk on the edge of light between the cup of ecstasy and the brink of the Kingdom (*A speech similar to Jalal al-Din Rumi: Ahesteh ke sarimstem)
There is no distinction within our gathering here, between the front seats of the councils, and what you see in the places where shoes are collected (places for storing shoes/slippers) at the doors; In our gathering, identities dissolved, until one could scarcely distinguish between a mighty sultan and a penniless dervish.
We became like rows of incense, all burning and moving with the heat of longing, and none is excluded from this discussion except the reclusive ascetic who remains dormant, untouched by the fires of love.
So how long will you continue to ask numerous questions, O Kamal, about the true nature of this station of perfection you have attained? For it is a station beyond compare, where dwellings vanish and phenomena are erased in the sea of Truth (complete annihilation in the Beloved)
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Station of “No Station”: Sheikh Kamal referred to the station of absolute annihilation, where the gnostic reaches a state that transcends classifications and behavioral stations, namely “bewilderment,” which signifies attaining the Truth that defies description.
Equality In “Al-Majlis,” Sheikh Kamal affirms his transcendent view of worldly classes. In the Tabriz Sufi lodge built for him by Sultan Hussein Jalayir, the Sultan would sit like a dervish before the Sheikh. This equality is not merely social; it is a “spiritual poverty” in which the king relinquishes his kingdom to attain the kingdom of love.
Critique of “Asceticism” The Cold One: Sheikh Kamal contrasts the “burning wood” (the ardent lover) with the “frozen ascetic” (the raw material). In his view, mysticism is a “hot” act that necessitates burning for meaning to emerge, while formal asceticism is a coldness and stagnation that prevent the soul from maturing.
The Symbolism of “Tarabkhaneh” (House of Ecstasy): In Sheikh Kamal’s language, true joy is that which The expulsion of “otherness” (Gham Dil) is followed by grief, and sorrow is “forbidden” because it is disrespectful to the Manifest One (God) who created eternal joy.
Summary of the Ghazal
Sheikh Kamal believes that sincere servitude to the Almighty Truth elevates the seeker to a station where he forgets himself and his world. The mystical gathering is an earthly paradise where material differences are erased, and the attainment to “perfection” requires complete burning, annihilation, and whoever seeks a stable “home” has not yet tasted the essence of the realm that is no home.
