The Dissolution of Existence before the Majesty of Exquisite Beauty

This Ghazal revolves around the “dissolution of existence before the majesty of beauty,” where Saeb employs his “delicate imagination” to demonstrate that every atom in the universe, from the narcissus to the sun, experiences a state of “wonder” before the manifestation of the beloved.

The narcissus gazes with admiration (to the point of madness/illness) into your serene eyes, and the roses in your garden have parted their branches, longing for your form.

Here, Saeb uses the personification of nature to prove that human beauty is the center around which existence revolves. The narcissus (which resembles an eye) is not merely a flower, but a gazer engaged in the worship of contemplating the beloved’s beauty. The blooming of the rose is not a natural phenomenon, but a tearing of the heart before the majesty of beauty.

The dewdrop seems heavy upon your delicate cheek, and the clouds kiss the earth from afar, in reverence for your garden.

This is the “eloquence of delicacy.” Where Saeb breaks with convention, making the dew (which is weightless) a heavy burden, to emphasize that the beloved’s skin is more delicate than the material world. As for the clouds, they represent “literature in the presence of beauty,” contenting themselves with kissing from afar out of awe and reverence.

And the spring of eternity appears dry in the eyes of one who has witnessed your captivating gait while in a state of profound ecstasy (intoxication/unaware of himself).

Here, Saeb poses the “paradox of existence.” The beauty of movement (walking) bestows a rapture surpassing the joy of drinking the water of life. The truth here is that the soul finds its immortality in living beauty, not in ancient myths.

Words freeze like lush green in the beaks of parrots in astonishment, and they transform into mirror-makers of your face.

Saeb connects the beautiful green color of the parrot with the verdant freshness of speech. When they encounter your face (the mirror), they are struck by a bewilderment that paralyzes them, transforming them from speakers into polished mirrors of your beauty.

The sun is but a tearful eye from gazing so intently at you; how can a human eye ever be satiated by your presence?

Saeb employs the “method of equation.” If the great sun (representing light and heat) melts and weeps (light being tears here) before you, then the human eye’s desire to see is an unquenchable desire, because the manifest is “infinite.”

And your words are so sweet that lips stick together, making it impossible to recount your conversation to anyone.

A masterful wordplay with the word “recount”; it means both “narration” and “sweets.” Saeb suggests that the content (sweetness) prevents the “word” (narration) from emerging, for the words, in their intense truth and sweetness, render the tongue speechless.

If your eyelashes (the thorns of your wall) are so alluring and beautiful, what do the thornless roses conceal within your garments?

Saeb moves from the “apparent” (eyelashes) to the “hidden” (the guarded secret). Eyelashes are the guardians of beauty, and if the guardian is captivating, then the eyelid is even more beautiful and alluring. This is a rational inference about the hidden meaning behind the delicate attire.

And the intrinsic light makes the mirror clear, and likewise, your face has no fear of the blackness of the down growing upon it.

Saeb affirms that “essence” overshadows “apparentness”; the inherent light of the beloved’s face makes even the “sparse hair” (line) that might mar the beauty of others, transform on her face into an adornment that enhances its radiance.

For wonder has paralyzed the hand of the rose-picker, so your garden needs no guards; your beauty is what stops the aggressors.

“Bewilderment/Amazement” is the weapon of beauty. Wonder creates a state of “awake sleep,” rendering the hand immobile, thus beauty becomes its own “guardian” without need for external means.

The Ghazal Meaning

Points to the overwhelming power of beauty that paralyzes the senses and transforms the universe into a mirror of wonder, and the poem reinforces the concept of “the eloquence of subtlety.” Where dew becomes a heavy burden, and parrots are mirror makers, and as a “painter of ideas,” Saeb transforms abstract concepts (like the mathematical point and human speech) into astonishing visual images that prove the mind’s impotence before the power of love.
