The Perfection of the Beloved and the Inadequacy of Art

The feathers of your arrows rise to the level of angelic wings, and the coquettish eyes of gazelles act as the string of your bow.

Saeb elevates the instruments of the beloved’s “killing” to a sacred status; death by the beloved’s arrow is a spiritual ascension, and the coquettishness of the eyes is the mechanical force of the bow, meaning that a single glance is enough to unleash the arrows of destiny.

And that which you sowed with your sword will reap eternal life, for they watered your sword from the spring of the Prophet Khidr.

This is a brilliant “equation” by Saeb, linking the “watering of steel” (its hardening with water) to the water of life. For death by the beloved’s sword is not annihilation, but rather the planting of the soul in the land of eternity.

The wheel of fortune dares not look askance at one who is madly in love with you, while the lion kisses the ground from afar for your prey.

The beloved’s protection prevents the vicissitudes of fate from harming the lover, and the righteous overturn the natural order. Even the king of the jungle (the lion) submits in awe to the one who has become prey in the trap of the beloved’s beauty.

Every part of you is a testament to the perfection of your beauty, while your image in the painter’s hand remains utterly incomplete.

Reality transcends representation (art), and the beloved’s beauty is complete in itself, to the point that any attempt to confine it in a painting will end in incompleteness, for divine perfection cannot be encompassed.

O what power you possess! Even the Egyptian ruler (Joseph, peace be upon him) considers the tangle of your hair a blessing and a favor bestowed upon him.

Saeb uses a technique of breaking with convention; For captivity by the beloved’s hair is the pinnacle of freedom and sovereignty, and even Joseph, the symbol of beauty and prestige, boasts of being held captive by this sultan.

And through the circular line of musk (the soft hair), a piercing gaze of beauty prepares to lead you to the highest degree of perfection.

Saeb overturns the traditional notion that sees the “line” (the growing hair) as a flaw; he sees it as “restoration” (construction) that enhances beauty and protects it from fading, like a skilled engineer fortifying a castle.

For one with a contented eye sees royal jewels as mere orphans’ tears, so how could Saeb’s deceptive heart fool your discerning gaze?

Saeb concludes with a state of contentment; The beloved possesses a contented insight that is not tempted by material things, and here there is a clever pun in the word heart; Saeb’s weak heart and counterfeit work cannot deceive those who see the truth beneath the surface.

The Ghazal Meaning

The true power of beauty lies in its ability to transform captivity into sovereignty, and death into immortality. The poem celebrates “the perfection of the beloved and the inadequacy of art,” with a profound mystical insight into “the contentment of the eye,” which rejects worldly adornments. Saeb here is the “architect of the verses,” who makes each line an “equation” proving that the enlightened soul is not deceived by appearances.
