The Emergence of Truth and the Impossibility of Concealing Emotion

The Ghazal revolves around “the emergence of truth and the impossibility of concealing longing,” considering that the enlightened soul knows no bounds, and that the vicissitudes of time (the reins of life) do not deter the knower from his spiritual flight towards the Truth.

My heart, restless with longing, is visible (like light itself) to all who see it from behind the strands of his black hair (a physical metaphor for the beloved having black hair); for how can the darkness of night (or black hair) obscure the radiant light of the luminous essence (the firefly) that draws its light from within itself?

And it is as if jealousy (from the intensity of love) overwhelms the sanctuary (the place of prayer), from the sheer beauty of the beloved’s captivating eyebrows. As if (out of intense jealousy) he were scratching his chest with the nails of regret, unable to attain that beauty.

For how far is the eye of remorse (regret) from grasping the reins of fleeting life (the swift passage of time in this world)? Have you ever seen an empty fishing net capable of withstanding the rush of water or containing its surge?

How can I rein in the wildness of my heart with the bridles of reason, when a single glance from the beloved’s eye (which captivates the heart with its beauty) transforms into a mighty wing that lifts my soul to the heights of ecstasy?

And do not seek tranquility in the borrowed garments of this world, which are like beautiful clouds; For the soft fur of the squirrel conceals within its folds a lightning bolt (electricity), carrying within its essence the seeds of destruction.

And the sea of divine mercy is the guarantor of purifying the souls of the people of this world (the children of Adam); just as the waves of the sea act as a polisher, clearing away the turbidity of dark (mud-laden) torrents, so too does divine mercy work upon hearts.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The Eloquence of Manifestation (The Pen): The first verse is considered an embodiment of Saeb’s philosophy of “self-sufficiency.” Truth and love need no external proof; rather, like the “Gowhar Shabtab/firefly illuminating the night,” they pierce the veils of darkness with their innate light.

The Theory of Liberation (Water and the Net): Saeb uses the metaphor of flowing water to emphasize that the soul that has tasted spiritual freedom is not hindered by the “nets” of worldly attachments, a central concept in the poet’s “New Style.”

The Squirrel’s Warning: In the fifth verse, Saeb warns against being deceived by glittering appearances. Wealth and status (the squirrel) are fraught with danger (lightning), just like the beautiful clouds that carry thunder and lightning.

The Ghazal means

The inevitable triumph of the spiritual essence over the material world. The poem is a hymn to liberation and transcendence, affirming that the “Sea of Mercy” is the ultimate destination for purifying the impurities of earthly existence. With his mastery as a “painter of concepts,” Saeb transforms the relationship between lover and beloved into a universal phenomenon where eyelashes are equated with thorns and hearts with luminous jewels.

Vocabulary

Bitab: troubled, impatient, or deeply in love
Gohar Shabtab: firefly or self-illuminating jewel in the darkness
Mihrab: place of prayer (Saeb always likens it to the curve of the eyebrow/an arch)
Jawlan: free flow, a journey, or a rush
Libas ‘Arit: borrowed clothes (a metaphor for the fleeting nature of worldly life)
Jamh Sinjab: precious squirrel fur (a symbol of material luxury that conceals devastation like lightning)
