Spiritual transparency, the Power of Attraction, and the Inevitability of Mortality

In this Ghazal, Saeb reaches the pinnacle of his “new style,” employing “strange meanings” to establish spiritual truths through astonishing sensory proofs. The text revolves around “spiritual transparency, the power of attraction, and the inevitability of annihilation,” relying on the “method of equation” to present in each verse philosophical wisdom that astounds minds and illuminates hearts.

My devotion in love has dried my blood, leaving not a single drop for the butcher’s dagger. And the power of my spiritual attraction is so great that it can squeeze pure water from the hardest, most solid iron.

And if the cloud of my eye continues to scatter pearls of tears with such generosity, then the cup of humility will transform the raging whirlpool into a boundless sea of overflowing grace.

Cast your gaze upon the dawn. It is as if, at every morning, he drinks a hundred cups of twilight’s blood (because its color is red), perhaps it will triumph each day in embracing that sun which fills the universe with light.

And he who is able to rein in the wildness of his restless heart possesses—necessarily—the power to halt the rush of the raging torrent at the height of its flood.

The pleasure and ecstasy found in pure wine are far greater than those found in wine mixed with water. Therefore, do not add water to sparkling wine (water to milk) to brighten its appearance (making it less pure, like the color of the moon) (because by doing so you destroy its true nature and original quality).

And the heaviness of the soul (attachment to this world) transforms the seeker on the path of God Almighty, with every step, into a still, motionless stone on the road, unless the traveler in this world casts off the cloak of deep heedlessness (sleep) before reaching the desired abode (the Hereafter).

Silence cannot contain the roar of a complaint, agitated with blood. Just as stitches (used to close wounds) cannot stop the flow of blood-tinged water from a deep (severe) wound, the secret will inevitably burst forth despite the most vehement attempts at concealment.

And tears of repentance are the only purifier for broken souls. Do you not see how the sea clears the turbidity of the flood and transforms its murky waters into a clear mirror (pure water) that reflects the light?

So too, the appearance of facial hair tries in vain to conceal those pure, beautiful red lips. But pure wine (natural beauty) needs no filter to purify it from impurities.

And it is a mistake to seek a trace of the lover in the presence of perfect union with the Beloved; for would the sanctuary dare to reveal its independent existence when it is dissolved in the sanctity of the Divine presence?

And he who tries to cling to the trappings of etiquette and affectation while in a state of spiritual intoxication (or ecstasy), in reality, he transforms the vastness of Paradise into a narrow prison that suffocates his soul. (*He who adheres to rigid customs and outward rules, even in a state of intoxication and liberation—which should be altruism and freedom from constraints—imprisoned himself in a narrow prison within a vast Paradise.)

How strange this world is! People achieve their goals through crookedness and deceit, just as a crooked fishing rod emerges from the sea laden with a bountiful catch, while a straight rod returns empty-handed.

And do not expect simple-minded people (fools) to keep secrets. For the mercury that does not settle on the mirror’s surface, as if it transforms into wings and feathers, soars across the pristine mirror, revealing what lies beneath.

So open the eye of insight when gray hair invades your head; for no wise person should spend their day on this moonlit night (a metaphor for gray hair, a head of white hair) in the depths of sleep, bewilderment, and heedlessness.

And lighten the loads of your ship in the sea of existence (this world). There is no better outlet for the burdens and pleasures of this world than the mouths of whales (a metaphor for annihilation, evoking the story of the casting of burdens and the Prophet Jonah, peace be upon him, in the belly of the whale, after the lot fell upon him). Lightening one’s load is the path to salvation from these deadly mouths.

O Sa’ib, those slain by love, their eyes never emptied the image of the beloved’s sharp sword, just as the thirsty man sees the image of water in his dream. For the soul yearns with love for the one who has slain it.

Contextual and Mystical Footnotes

The rhetoric of “deviation” (the template): The twelfth verse is a manifestation of Saeb’s pessimistic philosophy towards the material world; where he links “straightness” with loss, and “deviation” with profit, a paradox that undermines traditional logic.

Gray hair as a “moonlit night”: a beautiful image in which Saeb breaks the dust of habit (Ashna’i-Zda’i); Gray hair is not darkness, but rather “moonlight” that alerts the seeker to the approaching departure and the necessity of vigilance.

Purifying the Flood (Ashk va Darya): Saeb uses the metaphor of the sea to demonstrate the transformative power of repentance; tears of remorse transform the murky flood into a clear mirror. This is an application of “elements of nature” within an ethical context.

The Ghazal Meaning

The necessity of essential awareness and transcending superficial appearances. The poem is a hymn to spiritual attraction and relief from the burdens of matter, warning against the heedlessness of “Granjani/the burden of the soul with worldly attachments”.
