The Inevitability of Spiritual Unity and the Weakness of Material ties

In this Ghazal, Saeb delves with his “delicate imagination” into the philosophy of “unity and harmony,” addressing issues of convergence and separation in the style of “strange meaning” (ma’na biganeh). He sees the coldness of hearts as the autumn wind that scatters friends, and that annihilation in unity is the only path to strength, just as a drop becomes a torrent when it unites. The poem is a journey from the torments of separation to the certainty that essence (meaning) and word, or spirit and beloved, are one truth that the sword of time cannot sever.

The harshness of hearts and the coldness of companionship are what sever the bonds of friendship (separate the hearts of friends from one another). Just as the cold, dry autumn wind does, taking its hold on the leaves of the trees, one by one, scattering them to the winds;

And when a single drop joins with the rest, it becomes a mighty torrent, reaching the very ocean of truth. So how long will you—woe to you, you who lack ambition (you who lack zeal)—accept this fragmentation and separation?

For if two people were to live together for a century, but lacked spiritual harmony, the absence of this harmony would be enough to separate them in the blink of an eye. For souls are like assembled armies.

And there can be no harmony or conversation between youth and old age. Do you not see that the arrow (the young one) and the bow (bent like the old man) never meet, except to part immediately (when the bow is drawn, the arrow will fly swiftly)?

Just as rose petals lose their separate individuality when placed in a boiling oven and pot, transforming into a single, pure rosewater, so too do people achieve unity and empathy through enduring hardship and refining their character, even if they appear outwardly separate (like separate leaves in a garden).

The moment I glimpsed you from afar (my beloved), my composure vanished, and I lost control of myself. It was as if the caravan of my consciousness had reached the beloved’s abode, and its burdens (reason and tranquility) began to scatter in every direction (caravans are together during the journey, but disperse upon reaching their destination).

And so that the sweetness of affection may remain pure as honey, it is best that the homes of loved ones be scattered, far from one another, so that the longing for reunion may be warm and beautiful; for a little distance preserves the solemnity of the meeting and the splendor of friendship.

For in the realm of silence, all words melt away to become a single point, representing the meaning. But it is the loose tongue, when it unleashes words, that tears apart this unity and creates discord (this expresses the value of silence and the drawbacks of excessive talk; silence brings peace and empathy, while talk divides people).

And for those with insight and wisdom, there is no room for comparison between love and reason. They are two completely separate worlds, like the difference between the awakening of wakefulness and the deep slumber of sleep.

And despite the solemn oaths (swearing by God) they exchange in their gatherings, these friends harbor treachery for one another and secretly tear each other apart (backbiting).

But those whose souls are united by knowledge cannot be separated by any power. Fate (heaven) only separates strangers who have no true bond.

Nor can the sword sever the word from its meaning (the soul and the beloved), for they are like the body and the soul. And who is Saeb to possess enough ability to separate the soul from its eternal beloved?

Ghazal Meaning

Points to the inevitability of spiritual union and the fragility of material bonds based on appearances. The poem is a statement on the “psychology of connection.” Saeb emphasizes that “affinity” (relativity) is the reason for enduring love, and that word and meaning (or spirit and beloved) are an indivisible organic unity. He warns against “the sword of the tongue” and “estrangement” (courage) as factors that cause separation between lovers, considering love to be the only awakening in contrast to the heavy sleep of the mind or heedlessness.
