I desperately want to hold you in a sincere, warm embrace (very tight), as much as the pressure you put on my heart and the pain you caused it. I want to hold you in my arms, close to my heart.
He transforms the concept of “retribution” into a romantic one. Where the “pressing” becomes a physical act that proves the intensity of longing (love), and it is the “method of equation” that links the pain of the heart with the suffocating pleasure of the embrace.
For decades, I have been folding the ropes of my sighs, hoping to make them into a net (a noose), into which I will one day ensnare you.
Here we see the “embodiment of meanings,” where the ethereal “sigh” is transformed into a hunting tool. Material (as a sign), and the long patience in “folding the ropes” means that the knower (the seeker) is preparing his soul to seize the moment of divine manifestation.
And although the delicacy of your face makes seeing it impossible (as if it were pure light), wherever I turn my face, you are before my eyes.
This is a manifestation of “the unity of witnessing.” The beloved is so subtle as to transcend visual perception, yet he is present in every atom of existence for those who possess “the insight of the heart.”
So, even if intoxication were to overcome you, and you were to use my arms as a pillow for your sleep, out of my profound respect for you, I would not dare to place a kiss upon your ruby lips, tinged with wine.
Here, Saïb emphasizes the “etiquette of love.” And the veneration of the beloved, and the true lover rises above bodily desires even in moments of weakness, preserving the beloved’s beauty from the taint of touch.
And your body is so delicate that the touch of a rose petal leaves a blue mark, the color of a beautiful water lily; so how could I dare to embrace you forcefully?
The pinnacle of “delicate eloquence” and the technique of “breaking the mold” is evident in Saïb’s portrayal of the beloved as an ethereal being, wounded by beauty itself (the rose), thus transforming love into a state of awe and reverence, not possession.
It is not fair to deprive me merely of gazing upon you; for I do not intend to pluck the rose, but rather I am like the thorns that crown your wall to protect you.
Here, the lover presents himself as a guardian of beauty, a brilliant logical argument proving that “gazing” is a devotional act that does not detract from the sanctity of the beloved.
So if my words cause you the slightest distress, then my silence will be like a seal upon my mouth (I will close my mouth forever), without even uttering a word of apology.
He resorts Rightly so, to the “eloquence of silence,” where the beloved’s “not hearing words” becomes the most eloquent voice. The beloved is the center of the universe, and everything that disturbs their peace of mind must be erased, even if it is poetry.
For when I was free, I was in truth a slave to every worldly concern; but now, as I am captive to your love, I have attained my freedom from this world and the next together.
This is the “paradox of liberation.” Sa’ib sees that the true constraint is attachment to the material world, and that “captivity before the Almighty” is the only means to attain the station of complete “self-sufficiency.”
So, if You ask about the reason for my absence, I deliberately forgot myself (the ego) so that I might devote myself entirely to seeking You and striving for Your union.
The station of “annihilation in the Beloved,” and no The lover can find “God Almighty” as long as he is preoccupied with his own “self/ego”; for the erasure of personal existence is a condition for the total “vision” of the Beloved.
O You, the peace of the soul, do not ask about Sa’ib’s circumstances and what befell him in this world; for you are enjoying tranquility now, and I do not wish to disturb your peace of mind by mentioning my pain and suffering.
Sa’ib summarizes his doctrine in “absolute sacrifice.” Here, the lover is transformed into a “shadow” who does not even demand pity from the beloved, preferring to keep his pain hidden so as not to mar the serene beauty enjoyed by the beloved’s gaze.
Sufi and Gnostic Marginalia
The Philosophy of Annihilation and Absorption: In his first verse, Sa’ib indicates that “the complete embrace” is nothing but a symbol of the melting of the lover’s identity into the essence of the beloved; Where suffering (the squeezing of the heart) becomes the very means of union with the beloved.
The paradox of bondage and freedom: Saïb presents a mystical vision that overturns logical concepts; Liberation from the material world is only achieved through “captivity” in the beauty of Truth, and this Sufi “captivity” is what liberates the soul from the distractions of worldly concerns.
The loss of the self to find Truth: The ninth verse emphasizes the station of “abandoning the ego.” Sa’ib believes that the search for the Beloved necessarily entails the loss of the self. He who finds himself has lost the goal, and he who loses himself has reached the Beloved.
The sanctification of the Divine Presence (the subtlety of meaning): Depicting the body as if it is harmed by touching the rose points to the station of “transcendence.” Mystical vision perceives reality as too subtle to be grasped by the physical senses; rather, it is perceived through pure “vision.”
The Ghazal means:
That love is a system of “aesthetic sacrifice” that transcends conventional norms. From the perspective of the “new style” of Saeb, the poet builds his verses upon the following points:
Silence is the most eloquent form of speech: when Words would have disturbed the beloved’s tranquility, for silence is the highest expression of longing.
Transforming pain into beauty: Every stab or pang to the heart is seen by the one who is right as an opportunity to draw closer, transforming his sighs into spiritual fishing lines.
Detachment from both worlds: The ultimate goal is to reach a state where the lover’s sole concern is preserving the beloved’s comfort, even at the cost of ignoring their own personal pain.
This kind of Ghazal poetry is a manifestation of “the literature of presence,” where the poet hides behind “the thorns of the wall” to protect the rose, content to observe from afar.
