The philosophy of divine attraction and the unity of vision

In this Ghazal, Saeb emerges as an “architect of independent verses,” crafting each verse into a self-contained intellectual and philosophical unit. He employs the “method of equation” to connect spiritual truths with striking sensory images. The text revolves around the “philosophy of divine attraction” and the “unity of vision” of the enlightened mystic, asserting that the soul that has tasted the sweetness of “divine attraction” loses its agency in the presence of the Beloved, just as a straw in the presence of amber (magnetic amber) loses its will.

Just as the Prophet Jacob was guided by the fragrance of Joseph’s shirt to find his way, know that the pangs of longing and the yearning for reunion in the heart of the Beloved (the desired one) are far more intense and profound than in the heart of the lover.

For it is the amber stone (the magnet) that gives the weak straw wings to fly towards it (attracts it); so it is with the traveler on the path of truth, drawn by the Almighty Truth, who has no power to choose his course before the overwhelming force of Divine attraction.

And beauty (loveliness) is not beyond manifestation before pure eyes; do you not see how the mirror embraces the image of the Beloved with complete ease and without any barrier (without hindrance/without obstacle)?

For Paradise, with all its bliss and beauty, is but a thicket of thorns to one who is immersed in witnessing Your beauty (to one who has seen the beauty of the Almighty Truth). For when the soul is filled with the beauty of truth, all the pleasures of the world (even Paradise) become detestable and worthless.

Struggle and anxiety, amidst raging waves, lead to destruction and ruin. The only way to escape life’s difficulties is through surrender and tranquility (*Struggle and futile confrontation with problems increase the danger and intensify the storm; anxiety is like wings and feathers that make the wave of disaster soar and intensify. The solution to difficulties lies in peace and submission to fate; just as the only refuge for a ship in a raging sea is to drop the anchor of obedience and tranquility.)

When the Prophet Job witnessed the greatness of my patience in the face of severe trials, the waves of affliction transformed into a tongue of gratitude to God. Because the Prophet Job’s misfortune (wealth, family) seemed insignificant compared to the enormity of what I endure (Divine love).

Unlike physical objects, which, when broken, reveal their contents, the lover’s heart has a different structure. When it breaks due to the pain of love or the beloved’s persecution, the secret of love within it becomes more hidden, pure, and profound, just as cutting a letter into pieces preserves the secret it contains from prying eyes. (*A heart that claims to love but has not yet broken does not possess the true and profound secret of love; breaking is what grants this secret privacy and purity.)

From the perspective of those with insight and knowledge (the shining jewels), roses and thorns are equal in this apparent world. So when did Sa’ib, who had become a clear mirror (possessing a pure and impartial heart), acquire the ability to distinguish between ugliness and beauty (since a mirror, by its very material nature, does not differentiate between the ugly and the beautiful; all are equal, reflecting their images as they are)?

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The Duality of Attraction (Electricity and Straw): Sa’ib uses a material metaphor to explain the state of “attraction”; He believes that “choice” becomes meaningless when the soul connects with the magnet of divine beauty, embodying the concept of “the strange meaning.”

The Rhetoric of Detachment (Sir-Chashmi): Sa’ib asserts that the mystic who yearns for “the encounter” even renounces “Paradise,” because the vision of the Beloved creates a state of existential fulfillment that renders everything else “desirable.”

The Broken Heart and the Protected Secret: In the seventh verse, Sa’ib overturns conventional logic; Thus, destruction (breaking) is a means of preservation and protection, an image that reveals Saeb’s genius in “creating content.”

The Unity of Witness (the Mirror): He concludes the poem with the theme of “annihilation in unity.” Where the mirror (the polished heart) does not see the difference in images, but rather the single “truth” hidden behind multiplicity.

The Ghazal meaning

The power of love and its ability to overpower the will and elevate the soul above material constraints. The poem is a hymn to absolute surrender (Langer) and the insight that sees beauty in every atom. As a “painter of ideas,” Saeb transforms complex mystical concepts into vivid visual scenes, demonstrating that the secret lies in “fracture” and perfection in “polishing the mirror.”
