Strength lies in Gentleness, Victory in Humility, and Immortality in continuous movement

In this Ghazal, Saeb employs his genius in the “equational style” to make the element of “water” a mirror reflecting the realities of existence and the principles of morality. In each verse, he demonstrates that strength lies in gentleness, victory in humility, and immortality in continuous movement, transforming the physical properties of water into mystical proofs that astound the mind and illuminate the soul.

It is the unbridled speed that propels water into the embrace of the great sea; while stagnation and heaviness transform still water into mere sustenance swallowed by the dead ground.

For rust accumulates on the blade of a sword if it remains sheathed for too long. Likewise, water, by its constant flow, is what prevents it from stagnation and grants it the power to revive and give greenery to the ground.

And the weight of accumulated water increases the ferocity and speed of a flood; but heavy weights cannot restrain the unleashing force of destiny once it decides to proceed.

And try to purify (clear) the mirror of your heart so that it may be illuminated. For water, by virtue of its purity and clarity, extends its dominion over every thorn and rose in the garden of life.

And adopt gentleness and kindness as your approach (like the smoothness and fluidity of oil); for just as the freshness of water makes barren land green, so too does the sweetness of the tongue plant life in words.

It is not a complaint, if sighs escape under the weight of the sharp sword’s cruelty; Rather, it is like natural dust, which involuntarily rises (rises from the ground) when water is sprinkled everywhere (on dry land/here, the image of sprinkling water on the ground causes the dust to fly unconsciously).

For bad luck is nothing but a talisman (amulet) that protects the enlightened soul from the arrows of envy. Do you not see that the water of life only settles and becomes eternally abundant in the deepest darkness? (An allusion to the story of Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, with Alexander, and the water of life)

So do not seek pity from your companions on the dark day (the bad day); for Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, alone tasted the hidden eternity in the darkness, while Alexander remained deprived, wandering in the labyrinth.

Those who are humble are the most eager for the outpourings of Divine mercy; for the water flows willingly and joyfully towards the Lowlands

Has the magic and delight of the beloved’s beauty ever been so immense and infinitely perfect, driving the lover to ecstasy? For water itself becomes the drink of wine the moment its lips touch the beloved’s.

And the harshness of days purifies the soul from the stain of lethargy; just as the ruggedness of the stony earth cleanses the water of its impurities (impurities and mud) so that it may flow in clear streams.

And for the silent ones, there is one in the unseen world who speaks on their behalf; do you not see that The silent fish has taken the tongue of the water as its interpreter, revealing its existence. (For silent and reserved people, an unseen speaker (divine or supernatural) is found to reveal the truth within them/dignity and authenticity lie in silence. You don’t need to constantly speak to prove yourself; if you have value within, the unseen world will be your spokesperson and your identifier.)

Indulgence in material pleasures leads to the ruin of the body’s structure (the house); so beware of allowing water (destruction) to destroy the structure of your soul.

And the clamor and multitude of creation darken the universe in the eyes of the wise and discerning, just as a caravan’s onslaught muddies the clear spring (the gathering of caravans at a spring along the road spoils its purity),

So, O Sa’ib, do not be too averse to the company of learned and discerning people (those with pure hearts); for a precious pearl preserves a drop of water deep within its knot, out of loyalty and appreciation for its essence.

(O Sa’ib, one cannot easily ignore the grace, companionship, and blessings of those with pure hearts and wisdom, nor can one separate oneself from them.)

Contextual and Gnostic Marginalia

The Rhetoric of Deficiency and Perfection (Al-Khidr and Alexander): Saeb uses “darkness” to overturn the balance of historical power; authority (Alexander) is blind, while insight (Al-Khidr) is nourished from the springs of the unseen.

The Theory of Humility (The Lowlands): The ninth verse is considered a statement of the philosophy of “Khaksari” in Indian poetry; Divine grace seeks out broken hearts as water seeks out parched land.

The Silence Syndrome (The Fish and the Water): A beautiful surreal image in which Saeb connects the fish’s “muteness” with the water’s “eloquence,” affirming that silent truths possess the strongest proofs.

The Ghazal means

Human perfection lies in emulating the nature of water: purity of essence, humility of conduct, and a movement that knows no rust. The poem is a hymn to the soul that is liberated through action. And the struggle (Sanglakh), warning against the trouble of excess (Karwan) and the heedlessness of immersion in materialism, and it establishes Saeb’s position as a “painter of ideas” who transforms cosmic elements into aesthetic sermons that reside in the soul.
