In this Ghazal, Saadi weaves the outlines of the doctrine of “jealousy and beauty,” explaining that the greatness of the beloved necessitates the lover’s diminishment, and that seeing the truth is only possible by turning one’s gaze away from all else.
It is better for a weak person like myself (Saadi) not to attain the station of communion and closeness with the Supreme Friend (God). If there is any deficiency or weakness, it is due to the lover’s shortcomings, not to any deficiency in the Supreme Friend’s perfection and greatness.
For my soul is often constricted by jealousy of my own pupils. For this eye brazenly dares to behold the beauty of the Beloved and revel in the glimmer of His light.
And who is this frail moth to dare to cling to the candle’s light? For a single breath of the Beloved’s (God’s) majestic radiance is enough to annihilate and melt it in an instant.
So, my friend, fast (a spiritual fast, not the fast of Ramadan) from the pleasures of this world and its fleeting days of bliss. Perhaps through all this deprivation you will attain a spiritual Night of Destiny, in which the honor of union with the Supreme Beloved is realized.
And purify your heart from the desires of the ego; for it is impossible for the narrowness of existence to accommodate the company of the enemy (the self) and the enjoyment of the presence of the Friend (the Most High Truth) simultaneously within your body.
For if the Supreme Beloved were to ask for the soul and the head as a sacrifice, we would find ourselves standing before Him in submission. The right of friendship obligates the faithful to endure such sacrifice and giving (self-sacrifice, annihilation for the sake of the Supreme Beloved).
Blessed is the body that has sacrificed its soul in fulfillment of the covenant, and true happiness belongs to the head that has become prostrate before the Beloved, beneath His feet. This is an honor for the servant (complete submission to God).
If any reproach is directed (or found) from us towards You, we raise this complaint only to You. For it is not in the etiquette of love (the doctrine of lovers) to divulge the secrets of the Beloved before slanderers or detractors.
Saadi averted his gaze from all appearances of the world and closed his eyes to all else, until all of existence became a mirror reflecting to him only the image of the Beloved (God) alone.
Contextual and Mystical Footnotes
The Aesthetics of Deprivation (Kamal Dost): Saadi presents a subtle vision; This means that the seeker’s inability to achieve “union” is not a deficiency in him, but rather an exaltation of the Divine Essence, which no sense can comprehend nor any action attain.
The lover’s jealousy (Rashk): The gnostic is jealous of his own senses; Because the senses convey the beauty of the Beloved to the soul, and the true lover wishes that his soul and senses would perish so that the Beloved might remain unseen.
The Glory of Majesty: An excerpt from the saying: “If He were to unveil Himself, the radiance of His countenance would burn everything that His sight could encompass.” The moth burns because matter cannot withstand the flame of absolute truth.
Fasting from Indulgence (Rozeh Bash): Fasting here is not merely abstaining from food, but rather it is a “fasting of the heart” from turning towards worldly pleasures (others), in preparation for the Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr). Spirituality
Sewing the eye (Badokht Cheshm): The station of “abstraction,” and the knower sews his eye off the world (appearances) in order to open the “insight of the heart”; Then he sees that the world is but a shadow of the Beloved’s vision.
This sermon
Means that perceiving the beauty of Truth is contingent upon averting one’s gaze from the world’s adornments and the annihilation of the ego before the radiance of Divine Majesty. It is significant in spiritual and emotional development because it guides the seeker to the station of “true zeal” and acceptance of hardship for the sake of the Unique and Incomparable. It affirms that dying in fulfillment of the covenant is true life, and that seeing the Beloved’s vision in the particles of the universe is only attainable for those who close their eyes to the greed of the self and the desires of others.
