This ghazal verse is an elegy of the humbled soul and a testament to brokenness and remorse; therein, Sheikh Saadi strips away all pretensions of righteousness to stand at the threshold of helplessness and spiritual bankruptcy. With his mystical insight, he reveals that a servant cannot attain salvation through the meager wares of their own imperfect deeds; rather, it requires the outpouring of Divine Grace and humble supplication for the intercession of the righteous and the prophets.
English Translation
It is impossible to harvest the sweetness of fresh dates or cured fruit from the thorns we ourselves have sown; how, then, could we weave fine silk brocade from the coarse wool whose threads we spun with our own hands?
We cannot erase our transgressions merely with the pen of apology and seeking forgiveness; nor can we inscribe good deeds into the ledger of our actions—alongside our grave sins and offenses—or lighten the burden of the latter, when we never performed the former in the first place.
For we are the vanquished victims of the ego that commands evil, and we remain ignorant of its ways. Oh, the anguish and the sighs that will escape our chests on the Day of Judgment, when we ask ourselves with sorrow: “Why did we not slay this evil self with the scalpel of spiritual struggle?”
How my heart grieves for this precious life that has passed in vain—without us moving beyond our shortcomings or breaking free from the path of sin!
For this world is a place where the sincere seeker on the path to God does not let the clay of his heart mingle with its impurities; so what, then, of us—lowly souls ensnared in its nets—who have allowed the clay of our hearts to become kneaded with its greed?
Those saints—truthful travelers on the path to God—withdraw and remain still, like locusts at rest, within the solitude of spiritual discipline and humble submission to the Divine; meanwhile, we scurry about like ants driven by greed, rushing between doorways and across barren wastes in pursuit of the world’s fleeting dross.
The stages of youth and old age succeed one another just as night follows day; yet the night of our heedlessness has passed, the dawn of old age has broken, and death draws near—all while we remain un-awakened from the intoxication of worldly desire.
Alas, that we remain helpless and captive in our pursuit of the confines of material existence; and what a tragedy it is that we have left the door to divine reconciliation and repentance abandoned.
For how long can one sing like a bird upon these fleeting balconies—asking how long the soul must remain confined within this body? Take heed: tomorrow, within this crumbling edifice—this worldly life—we shall be nothing more than voiceless, lifeless lumps of clay (mere mud bricks formed from the earth after our death).
It would be truly astonishing to find a refuge and a helper on that harrowing Day (the Day of Resurrection) when, during our time in this world, we offered neither sanctuary nor support to the grieving or the destitute.
And if the Master and Intercessor (Al-Mustafa Muhammad, peace be upon him) does not come to our aid with his intercession on the Day of Judgment/Reckoning, we cannot blame the instrument of grooming and beautification (the comb) for our own hideous countenances (our evil deeds); we have only ourselves to blame.
May the outpourings of Divine Providence reach us with mercy and forgiveness; otherwise, do not imagine that—with deeds deserving of Hellfire—we are fit to be among the inhabitants of Paradise.
O Sa’adi, perhaps those righteous ones drawn near to the Divine—masters of spiritual insight and the path of the Truth—might bestow upon us a single stalk from the harvest of their spiritual standing and piety; for we have sown not a single seed of goodness in the field of this world.
Contextual and Gnostic Annotations
Sowing and Reaping (Khar and Khurma): A Gnostic representation of the law of cause and effect—both material and spiritual. He who sows the thorns of carnal desire cannot reap the dates—the sweetness—of Divine Union; for deeds are the seeds of one’s future spiritual state.
The Wall of Nature (Divar-e Tabiat): Sufis use the term “Nature” to refer to earthly desires and the temporary physical frame; standing behind this wall signifies being veiled from the realm of spirits and confined within the prison of the senses.
Locusts and Ants (Malakh and Mur): A striking dual metaphor: the Saints are like “locusts”—legs folded in the silence of spiritual discipline, hunger, and contemplation—whereas the worldly-minded are like “ants”—girded by greed, scurrying ceaselessly to gather the fleeting debris of this mortal world.
Intercession and Divine Grace (Khwaja and Inayat): Sheikh Saadi affirms the Gnostic doctrine that deeds are not the intrinsic price of Paradise; rather, salvation is attained through “Divine Grace” and the intercession of the Noble Prophet (PBUH). The servant enters Paradise by the grace of his Lord, not by the merit of his own actions.
The Harvest of the Near-Stationed (Kharman-e Iqbal-e Bozorgan): An expression of profound Malamati (self-effacing) humility. Here, Sheikh Saadi acknowledges his utter spiritual bankruptcy and seeks a blessing in the form of a single “stalk of grain” from the harvest of those drawn near to God (the Saints)—an act embodying the spiritual station of “brokenness” and the renunciation of all claims to merit.
This Sermon means
A servant’s salvation and spiritual elevation do not stem from being deluded by one’s own imperfect worldly deeds or from boasting of one’s asceticism. Rather, they are founded upon sincere brokenness, the admission of shortcomings, and reliance on the outpouring of Divine Grace and the intercession of the righteous. This teaching holds great importance for the path of spiritual wayfaring and the purification of the soul; it shatters the veils of “vanity and self-assertion” and directs the seeker to implore for pure, unearned Mercy—affirming that the truly “bankrupt” servant is the one who recognizes his own nothingness and casts himself upon the threshold of Eternal Divine Bounty.
