This ghazal embodies an epic of “freedom within the captivity of love” and the “inevitability of eternal destiny.” With keen insight, Sheikh Kamal weaves a narrative of how the beloved’s sorrow and grief transform into liberation and freedom, and how the lover—mad and openly consumed by passion since birth—stands steadfast against the admonitions of ascetics and critics. Sheikh Kamal Khujandi remains faithful to his signature poetic structure, a seven-verse composition that epitomizes perfect balance and completeness.
English Translation
Your eye knows no bounds in the tyranny and injustice it inflicts upon those madly in love with you; for the heart of that cruel hunter—dark and unyielding—cares nothing for the wailing of the frail birds ensnared in his nets.
Indeed, people have wept aloud at the sight of your radiant countenance, stirred by the intensity of my anguished sighs. It is as if the winds had sworn a solemn oath to bring down the rain of sky precisely when the flowers are in bloom.
You declared that you would uproot—tearing them out by the very roots—all those whose hearts are bound to me (who in love with beloved); so if this love of mine is the sole offense, then begin with me—uproot and tear me from my very foundations first.
Far be it from me to be the servant who complains of the cares and sorrows born of loving you; for within that very anguish and sorrow lies a true freedom and liberation—for bondman and freeman alike.
And if I have carved a kiss from your touch with such precision and consummate artistry—rivaling the mastery of Farhad as he carved the mountains—then what harm is there in that? There is no fault in Farhad (Kamal) if he turns his pickaxe and his sculpting mastery toward his own heart and self.
The memory of the beloved’s towering stature—graceful as the cypress—echoes in the ear of my soul; so, O ascetic, I implore you: recite your litanies in a whisper, lest you disturb the communion between my heart and the beloved.
How can Kamal be dissuaded from love, O kindred soul (my dearest brother)? For paternal counsel stands no chance of restraining the youth who has been madly, openly consumed by passion since the very moment of his birth.
Contextual and Gnostic Margins
The Symbolism of “Farhad’s Pickaxe” (Tisheh-ye Farhad) and “Shirin-Kari”: Sheikh Kamal Khujandi invokes the famous romantic-Gnostic legend of Farhad and Shirin. The term “Shirin-kari” signifies exquisite, refined craftsmanship, while simultaneously denoting labor undertaken for the sake of the beloved, Shirin.
The pickaxe (tisheh) with which Farhad strikes the mountain symbolizes the Gnostic spiritual struggle—a process wherein the spiritual wayfarer carves his own heart to reveal the image of the Divine Beloved within it.
Critique of the Ascetic’s Litanies (Parsa and Awrad): Sheikh Kamal frequently critiques clericalism and performative asceticism. He urges the ascetic to lower the volume of his litanies, for the lover is occupied with listening to the “remembrance of the Lofty Stature” (the Divine Manifestation) and the remembrance of Ultimate Truth. To the mystic (‘ārif), it is a witnessing of the heart—a state far superior to the mere repetition of words that occupies the ascetics.
The Station of “Freedom within Servitude” (Āzādagī): Sheikh Kamal asserts that servitude to the anguish of Divine Love is the highest form of freedom. The servant bound by love for the Truth (Al-Haqq)—Exalted is He—is liberated from all the shackles of the material world and all “others” (attachments to anything other than the Beloved). Thus, in this station, the free man and the slave become equal, for both have been effaced in the witnessing of the Beloved.
The Philosophy of “Ruswā-ye Mādar-zād” (Primordial Love): In this passage, Sheikh Kamal points to the concept of primordial destiny (‘Ishq-e Azal). The lover did not choose this love through rational deliberation—such that he might abandon it upon the advice of a “father” or a “soulmate”—but rather, he was “exposed by love” from the very moment of his birth (mādar-zād); and this… An allusion to the “Am I not your Lord?” covenant, with which the soul was imbued before its incarnation in the body.
Summary of the Ghazal
Sheikh Kamal views passionate love as an inescapable destiny that cannot be averted by counsel or admonition; the injustice a lover suffers at the hands of the beloved is the very path to their ultimate self-annihilation. He asserts that finding intimacy in the remembrance of the Truth requires lowering the voices of outward litanies, for the heart becomes filled with the echo of the “Lofty Stature.” He concludes by affirming that public exposure in love is a form of freedom and liberation—a gift bestowed upon the lover from the very cradle.
