Love is a path demanding unwavering commitment

This amorous poetry represents an epic of the “fatwa of fatal passion” and “absolute jealousy.” With his mystical insight, the Sheikh articulates how the Beloved’s tyranny transforms into a sacred law—ratified by the very essence of Beauty—and how the lover attains the pinnacle of self-effacement, becoming jealous even of the “morning breeze” should it dare to carry his greeting. He adheres to his own ethereal structural canon—manifest in the “Seven Verses” (the Seven Mighty Ones)—which distinguishes his ghazal poetry from that of all other poets.

English Translation

Your eyes and brows declare that, according to their doctrine—the creed shared by lover and beloved—the killing of lovers is deemed lawful and sanctioned; upon this ruling, the verdict—the Fatwa of Eternal Beauty—is firmly established.

So, if you wish to launch a raid to slay your lovers by night within my private sanctuary—accompanied by the Raqib (the censor or romantic rival)—then command the Raqib not to come, and come instead alone, at any time. So, I welcome your crushing power.

There is a common saying that death in the company of loved ones is a celebration; indeed, the anguish and sorrow of love consumed Wamiq and Majnun Layla—so kill me with your own hand, that I, too, may perish.

Whenever I seek a favor from your honeyed lips, you hold back and deny me what I desire; grant, then, an act of charity from yourself to a destitute beggar, that it may serve to ward off calamity from him.

Everyone is captivated by your grace and coquetry, yet none match the depth of my need and longing for you; and while all may hope for your rebuke, none match the sincerity of my own prayer for that very thing—to be chastised by you.

For I have sworn by your well-being that I would not suffer even the wind to touch your sanctuary. I am loath to entrust the morning breeze with the task of conveying my greetings to you, fearing it might vie with me for your love.

For when we write—O Kamal—the tale of the anguish of parting from the beloved… The heart wails in solitude, the pen weeps in solitude, and the missive—or letter—screams in solitude.

Contextual and Gnostic Nuances:

The Context of the “Fatwa of Passionate Annihilation”: Sheikh Kamal Khujandi employs a jurisprudence citation—‘alayhi al-fatwa (upon this rests the ruling)—to demonstrate that fana’ (annihilation of the self) constitutes the supreme law within the “School of Passion.” The Beloved’s eye and eyebrow—symbolizing Divine Majesty and Beauty—issue a death sentence upon the lover’s ego; the sincere lover accepts this ruling with gladness, for annihilation in the Beloved is the very essence of true endurance.

The symbolism of “warding off affliction through charity”: Sheikh Kamal masterfully employs a concept drawn from both folklore and jurisprudence in the fourth verse. When the beloved withholds favor, the lover implores them in the guise of a gada—a mendicant who offers blessings in return for alms. Yet, the “charity” sought from the beloved is not material wealth; rather, it is the divine manifestation that shields the heart from the affliction of estrangement.

The subtlety of “jealousy of the morning breeze”: In the sixth verse, the Sheikh attains the pinnacle of “amorous jealousy.” While poets typically regard the Saba breeze as a messenger of love, he views it instead as a rival vying for the beloved’s affection; consequently, he begrudges even sending greetings through it, lest anything other than himself should touch the beloved.

The Rhetoric of Khāmah, Nāmah, and the Heart: Sheikh Kamal invokes the tools of calligraphy and writing that flourished in Tabriz during the Jalayirid and Timurid eras. The emotional interplay between Khāmah (the pen), Nāmah (the letter/page), and the heart illustrates the profound turmoil that separation inflicts upon the lover’s entire being and his means of expression.

Summary of the Ghazal

In this exquisitely crafted seven-line ghazal, Sheikh Kamal asserts that love is a path demanding unwavering commitment, and that the annihilation of the self constitutes the true festival for lovers. Divine poverty—gadāyī—is the path to attaining the spiritual emanations of the Sacred Threshold. Sheikh Kamal concludes by noting that the anguish of separation reaches such an intensity that pen, paper, and heart all weep in a poignant chorus, thereby demonstrating the consummate mastery of his literary and mystical artistry.
