In this Ghazal, Saadi opens a window onto the “world of the unseen,” where the scales are tipped; death for the sake of the beloved becomes life, and apparent poverty becomes a treasury of sultans’ treasures. It is a text that celebrates the “sultanate of poverty” and the “heroism of annihilation.”
The station and rank of love belong to a sacred realm where the laws of this material world do not apply (another world, different from the material world we live in). Therefore, for the person whose heart is filled with love, there are signs and secrets whose true nature is beyond the comprehension of the common people (the rest of humanity).
And in the marketplace of those who sacrifice their lives for the beloved, where souls are offered up for a single glance from the Beloved, you will find, beneath every gallows of affliction, a young man consumed by longing, who willingly offered his head for the sake of union (meeting the Divine Beloved).
Therefore, the logical mind (based on logic and evidence) stands bewildered, questioning the essence of this perplexing enigma. How could this group of lovers (of God) possess an existential logic that contradicts all the standards of well-being and health known to ordinary humankind?
For in the very core of the heart of every poor, broken, and oppressed soul, in which the fires of selfishness have been extinguished, lies a hidden treasure, an extension of the knowledge of the Supreme King (God), the extent of which is known only to those firmly rooted in the truth.
And these dervishes, who constantly invoke the name of the Truth (Exalted is He) in their breaths, are in reality the sovereigns of their time. They understood those who subdued the realms of the soul with the sword of poverty and reliance on God alone.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The World of Love (Jahani Digar/The Other World): Saadi affirms that love is not merely an abstract human emotion, but rather another “existential dimension.” When the seeker enters its abode, his senses are transformed, and he begins to see what the rest of creation cannot.
The Market of the Headless (Sarbazan): A subtle play on the word “Sarbaz” (soldier). For Saadi, the lover is the “true soldier” because he plays with his head (Sir + Baz) as an offering to the beloved, and the gallows (Dar) here is not an instrument of punishment, but rather an “ascension” to union.
The treasure is in the broken heart: a reference to the doctrine of “manifestation in brokenness.” God does not manifest in hearts filled with pride, but in the “poor” hearts in which human idols (the ego) have been shattered.
Sovereignty in poverty: Saadi overturns the pyramid of material power; The one who asks God (Gada: the poor one) is the victorious king (Sahib-Qur’an) because he has found sufficiency in the One (God) and is independent of all (creation).
The Sermon Meaning
The world of the spirit and love is subject to standards that the material mind cannot comprehend. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it highlights the station of “honor in poverty” and the annihilation of the “ego” for the sake of the Beloved. It affirms that divine treasures are deposited only in broken hearts that have relinquished worldly prestige, and that those who are sincere in their love for God are the true kings, even if their clothes are worn.
