The Ghazal is a quintessential “Malamati” document; in it, Sheikh Muslih al-Din Sa’di Shirazi strikes at the wall of hypocrisy, calling for secret worship and warning against being deceived by outward appearances and blue rags, to lead us to a profound truth: that the saints of God may be hidden beneath the rags of misery or the cloak of inactivity.
English Translation
For a servant to commit a sin in secret, to be humbled and feel remorse for his action, is better than outward obedience in which he becomes conceited. If you truly desire to worship God, then free yourself from the worship of desires (submission to the whims of the self and pride in worship).
Beware of looking upon creation with eyes of conceit and arrogance because of your worship, for God’s chosen ones and His beloved servants, those who are better than you, may be hidden among the common people or those whom others despise, the rabble.
For there are people who tread this earth with their feet, yet they are kings within themselves, by virtue of their self-restraint and their abandonment of worldly power (the rich of soul). Those for whom the entire earth’s dominion is worth less than a rotten carcass.
And the limited eyes of others (the rest of humanity who do not recognize the worth of these people) are incapable of perceiving their glory, just as the limited vision of a bat (a bat is blind by nature) is incapable of beholding the radiant sun.
For their nature overflows with generosity, without making others feel indebted, and they endure harm and harshness from others without resorting to hostility or vindictiveness.
And they flee from the tables of the ignoble as smoke escapes from the hearths, and they do not extend a hand to beg for a morsel or a bowl of food.
For they have emptied their hearts of love for both worlds (this life and the hereafter); for how can the remembrance of the Beloved (God) coexist in a person’s heart with the preoccupation of counting possessions and trading in cloth (being preoccupied with worldly matters)?
They are accepted by God for the purity of their hearts, while people perceive them as shrouded in humility, or as indifferent to deceptive appearances.
And the most eminent among the people of religion ascend the paths of Truth, the Most High, in silence and tranquility, for only the poppy, with its hollow interior, makes a loud noise.
The full maturity of the wise and happy person lies in not raising their head in arrogance towards the poor (dervish) who has been freed from all constraint in this world.
For the final abode of the righteous or the wicked has not yet become clear in this world; The true measure of acceptance on the Day of Judgment lies in the goodness of one’s final abode in the Hereafter, not in the comforts of this world.
If you are content with mere outward appearances instead of the essence of truth, then wear the blue cloak (the garment of the ascetic/Sufi) and shave your head like them.
However, the aim of those on the spiritual path (the Sufi order and its sheikhs) is not simply outward adornment and austere dress. Rather, your duty is to dedicate your heart to serving the Sovereign (the Almighty Truth), and afterward, be whatever you wish (dress like the Sufis)and act as they act.
And from all the bounty and blessings God has bestowed upon you, make a portion of these favors available to His humble servants (just as God has blessed you, bestow a portion of it upon His servants).
As long as time has opened its doors to you (favoring you), then fulfill the needs of the people, and since power is now in your hands, beware of hurting anyone’s feelings.
For Saadi’s words are not empty, lifeless, ornate inscriptions, like those painted by decorators on the doors of public baths for decoration.
Rather, they are a veil studded with rubies and pearls, draped gracefully over the face of a captivating beloved.
Contextual and Mystical Marginalia
The Station of Blameworthiness (Randi and Laabali): Sheikh Saadi refers to the “path of blameworthiness,” where the mystic deliberately displays actions that invite people’s reproach (such as frequenting disreputable places or abandoning formal attire) to protect his heart from hypocrisy. They are accepted by God (“Beh Nikmardi… Qubul”) but rejected by creation.
The Bat and the Sun: An ancient Qur’anic and mystical metaphor; the sun (the Truth) does not disappear, but rather the “eye of the bat” (the incapable insight) is what is unable to bear the light.
The Core and the Shell (Maghz and Post): Sheikh Saadi reiterates his philosophy that religion is a “state” (of being), not a “statement” (of words). The blue robe and the shaved head are mere “shells,” while the “core” is service to the Almighty Creator.
The Silence of the Great (Dam Nazanand): Sufis believe that “he who truly knows God is rendered speechless,” and that noise and pretense are signs of inner emptiness, just like the poppy flower (a plant from which a narcotic substance is extracted) that trembles in its empty interior, producing a sound.
Saadi’s Veil: Sheikh Saadi describes his poetry as a “veil” (or “turban”) adorned with eloquence and true beauty, concealed behind these words, visible only to those whose vision penetrates through the aesthetic veil to the sublime meaning.
Sheikh Saadi’s words and advice possess an appearance of exquisite beauty and grandeur, like jewels adorning the face of a beloved, gentle, and cherished lover. They are not merely an outward embellishment, but rather possesses a living spirit, a captivating charm and truth. The beauty of its words intertwines with the beauty of their meaning; it is like jewels, a captivating beloved, and a pleasing appearance with movements that enthrall the heart.
This sermon means:
The true standard of faith lies in the sincerity of the heart and liberation from the idol of selfishness and deceptive appearances. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it demolishes the veils of hypocrisy and guides the seeker to understand that the essence of truth is not attained by wearing blue robes, but by annihilation in the service of God Almighty and His creation. It emphasizes that God’s saints are veiled by the quietude of remembrance, and that the silence of the knower, filled with certainty, is more eloquent than the empty clamor of the pretender.
