The Ghazal represents the constitution of the “Malamatiyya” (a school of thought known for its lamentations); where Sheikh Saadi calls upon the seeker to demolish the idol of the “ego” and destroy the outward manifestations of hypocritical asceticism in order to cultivate his inner self with the hidden treasures of truth beneath the ruins of annihilation.
English Translation
He who finds solace in the beauty of the Beloved and attains knowledge of Him through closeness, command him to forsake the company of his own self and become a stranger to his ego. Beware of relying on your fleeting, metaphorical (material) existence. Rather, be bold and courageous in the face of annihilation and nothingness.
For how can angels and holy lights find a place in the heart of someone immersed in the worship of appearances? Go forth and erase the traces of materialism and attachment to creation from your heart, so that you may become a companion and dwelling place for spiritual beings (angels).
There is no harm or prohibition for those with pure insight to contemplate the manifest beauty, since prostration, in its essence, is to God Almighty alone, it matters not if the place of worship (the place of prostration) is a house of idols, for what matters is the object of worship (the Creator), not the place.
If you are attached to the superficialities of appearances, then it is more fitting for you to don the garb of disbelief in the seclusion of hermitages (the place of the devout ascetic). But if you purify yourself from the stain of hypocrisy, then be a wise, knowledgeable, and hidden being in the houses of spiritual immersion (outwardly a tavern, a place of physical intoxication), and annihilation and self-reproach.
For the construction of true spiritual life lies in inner purity, not in outward embellishment. Fill your inner self and hidden secrets with certainty, and let your outward appearance before others be a display of madness.
If you are captivated by yourself and your outward worship, then withdraw into it like a silkworm (which spins its cocoon only to die within it). But if you are free from self-love, then be like the butterfly, giving its life and flying bravely as a sacrifice for the light.
So, O Saadi, the clamor of leadership and the glitter of worldly power are worthless. Live hidden like a jewel concealed within a rock, like a treasure unnoticed in the corners of ruin.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
Annihilation of the Self (Z Khud Bighaneh Bash): Sheikh Saadi reiterates the major Sufi doctrine that considers the “existence of the servant” a sin beyond compare, and that knowledge of the Truth necessitates ignorance of the self. The more you find solace in God, the greater your alienation from all else, and the first of “others” is your own ego.
The Inner Belt: In the language of the mystics, the belt is not a piece of cloth, but rather the “connection” that binds the heart to the world or to hypocrisy. Sheikh Saadi believes that outward piety in hermitages can be a wall thicker than intoxication in taverns. (Ruins), obscuring the seeker from the truth.
The butterfly and the silkworm: a striking metaphor. The silkworm weaves a prison of selfishness around itself and dies within it, while the butterfly tears its veil to be consumed by the Beloved (Divine Light). True love is liberation from the prison of the self.
The treasure lies in the ruins: Divine truth is not revealed in arrogant hearts (palaces overflowing with vanity), but rather in broken hearts (ruins). Sheikh Saadi urges the seeker to conceal his state and appear as a humble dervish, thus becoming a hidden treasure.
This Sermon means
The path of love and union with the Beloved is contingent upon the complete abandonment of self-perception and the allure of appearances in favor of cultivating the inner self with truth. It is crucial in the path of mystical conduct and the purification of souls because it guides the seeker to the station of “abstraction,” where praise and blame become equal. Affirming that true elevation lies in the “inactivity” that conceals the treasures of knowledge, and that whoever desires to dwell with angels must erase the images of other than God from the mirror of their heart.
