The True Lover who Worships the Beloved

This Ghazal represents the epic of “The Declaration of Pure Love”; Where Sheikh Kamal, with his mystical insight, weaves the station of “public declaration of love” after concealment, affirming that the essence of the lover (from the pores of the hair to the stirrings of the soul) has become entirely love, and that the beloved’s harshness, even in “shedding blood,” is purely the lover’s desire to be annihilated in the Truth.

English Translation

From this day forward, I openly declare my love for You; How could I conceal from You, O splendor of lovers, the radiance of my love, when every fiber of my being now yearns for You?

For every hair on my head adores me, for I am captivated by You; every atom in my being loves me as much as I love You.

Whether You choose to dwell in my heart or reside in my soul; Wherever You may be, there or here, You are the Beloved I adore.

For I find it shameful and disgraceful to praise the beauty of a cypress tree or a lavender flower in the gardens, as long as my soul is captivated by the radiance of Your cheek and the unparalleled grandeur of Your stature.

And even if You were hidden from me, I would still love You without ceasing, as my love for You is free from the desires of the soul and the longings for union, it is a love for Your sake.

Thus, both sight and insight (the heart) are uniquely devoted to loving You. It is not only my own soul, the captive of heart, that yearns for Your love.

For if You were to say, O Beloved, “I will shed your blood so that you will hate me, O Kamal,”, I would say, “I have loved You only for these destinies in which my annihilation lies at your hands.”

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The rhyme of “Dost midaram tura”: This rhyme (I love you) is considered one of the longest and most complex rhymes created by Sheikh Kamal Khujandi, which distinguishes him from previous ghazals, and this repetition resembles continuous remembrance, where all the verses are imbued with the color of unwavering love.

The station of “love without desire”: In the fifth verse, Sheikh Kamal refers to the highest level of love, which is the love of “Truth for Truth.” The knower here loves the Beloved whether there is union or not, and transcends the soul’s mere “desire” for the sake of “the will of truth.”

The philosophy of “shedding blood”: These threats from the beloved are, in the lover’s understanding, “subtleties.” “Khun Rizi” (shedding of blood) symbolizes the ultimate annihilation, and Sheikh Kamal believes that the supposed enmity of God towards His servant is, in essence, the ultimate goal of divine selection, because it erases the existence of the servant so that only the Beloved remains.

Kamal’s allusion: As is his custom, he concludes with his name, indicating that his love has reached the point of “perfection” (Kamal). So that in death at the hands of the beloved, he finds eternal life.

Summary of Ghazal

In this Ghazal, Sheikh Kamal declares that love is no longer a secret, but has become an identity encompassing both the physical and the spiritual. He rejects the beauties of nature in the face of eternal beauty, and accepts oppression and estrangement with an open heart, for the true lover is the one who… He worships the beloved for His own sake, not for worldly pleasures or to avoid hell.
