Part Fourteen: The Superiority of Composing Speech in Poetry

In this fourteen part, the poet explains the secret of (the superiority of poetry over prose). In these verses, he does not see poetry as merely the arrangement of rhymes, but rather as “the shadow of prophecy” and the true key to the treasures of the unseen.

English Translation

Since fleeting speech is not weighed on the scales of wisdom, then measured and rhymed speech, in the eyes of those who grasp the essence of meaning, is the true essence.

And consider how the preserver of eloquence (the knower) cherishes that when subtleties are crafted with precision and balance, for meter and rhyme bestow upon meaning its majesty.

Indeed, poets (those who weigh their poetry with precision) when they raise the banner of eloquence, extract the treasures of both worlds (this life and the hereafter) and imprison them within their words.

Especially that key which unlocks the door to the treasure, it is hidden beneath the tongue of the wise poet, who knows the meter of speech.

For he who weighs words with a precise scale has made the people of happiness ripen and be perfected by the blessing of his words.

And indeed, the guardians of eloquence (the poets) are the birds (nightingales) of the divine throne that sing the sweetest words. How then can they be compared to others who do not possess this spiritual melody?

When the fire of thought melts them and they dissolve within it, they ascend in their station until they become close to the angels in their purity.

And the veil of secrets woven by poetry is but a shadow of the veil of prophecy. The poet speaks from a light akin to the light of the prophets.

In the rank of divine majesty, there is an order of stations; the prophets preceded them, and the poets followed directly behind them.

These two groups (the prophets and the poets) are those closest to the secret of the one (Beloved). They are the essence of this existence, and all else is but husk.

Every sweet word offered on this table of poetry is not merely speech, but a fragment plucked from the very core of the soul.

These sweet words, forged by the soul through great effort and suffering, are ideas chewed by the heart’s fangs with intense exertion and profound thought until they are transformed into light.

Part Fourteen The Superiority of Composing Speech in Poetry

Part Two (Verses 13-24), and in these verses, the poet moves from venerating the poet’s position as a shadow of the prophet to describing the “spiritual state” of the inspired poet; Where he makes the posture of contemplation (placing the head on the knee) a ladder enabling him to conquer the celestial spheres and extract the gems of the unseen.

And the wellspring of wisdom, embodied in eloquence (beautiful poetry), has melted away and perished, becoming worthless water on the verge of running dry, sold for a pittance and a meager reward (like the price needed to make a single loaf of bread, meaning that poets are forced to sell the precious essence of wisdom and eloquence or use it to earn their daily bread).

And whoever he possesses a spiritual melody behind the veil of this existence, for he has a dwelling in the Kingdom of Heaven, higher and more beautiful than this narrow chamber (this world).

And by virtue of the poet ability to meditate (placing his head on his knee), through which he attains the station of sainthood, the knower poet does not bow his head in humiliation at any threshold of kings.

And when the knower assumes the posture of contemplation as the heart embarks on its journey, its dominion becomes absolute, and it carries within its spirit the secrets of both worlds.

When the wise, contemplative knower bows his head (to kiss his foot) in submission to the Most High Truth; His body becomes like a complete circle when its beginning meets its end (head to toe) in the meditative posture.

And in that sacred bowing that sets the rhythm of his being, the lower self is broken (complete submission to the Creator), so that God may reshape his spirit pure.

Sometimes, from the stillness of that meditative state (the continuous circle from head to toe), the poet places thousands earrings in the ear of the sky; (Meaning that the heavens become obedient servants to his words)

And at other times, he extracts from this small turquoise box (the sky) ten stars like beads, which he plays with the fingers of his eloquence (as if he were playing a lyre)

When the vehicle of eloquence takes shape, to utter the sweetest words, his spirit ascends to his lips, yearning to kiss the sacred words that he utters it.

And after extracting the ruby of meaning from the mine of his thought, he pierces the shell of the seven heavens with his poetry to reach the throne.

Indeed, the profound verses that the poet creates with his genius are truly legitimate offspring, belonging to their father (the poet).

The arched sky then comes to be under his service and subject to his command, and thus the poet is freed from the affliction of servitude to created beings, for he has ascended to the dominion of meaning.

Part Fourteen The Superiority of Composing Speech in Poetry

Part Three (verses 25-36): In this section, the poet Nizam Kanjawi reaches the pinnacle of defiance. He links poetry with “permissible magic,” which surpasses the allure of Venus, and elevates the value of “meaning,” which is bought with the soul, not with bread, warning of the fate of those who sell their knowledge to sultans.

And whoever shares this poet’s breath finds solace for their soul, for his words become a seal upon tongues, a mark of reverence.

Whoever is the creator of this rhetorical structure (the exquisite verbal foundation, as if it were a body), then you must adhere to his words; For he is the true educator of the secrets of speech.

I call him the planet Jupiter, for his knowledge of the magic of eloquence, and I see him as like the planet Venus, which vanquished the seductive magic of angel Harut with the power of its spiritual magic.

And when the caravan of words and poetry sets out, it was once in the hands of swift and skilled knights, men of dignity. But now, it has become like a heavy burden, moving slowly and quietly, without leaving a trace. It is only natural that its value plummet to the lowest and most despised level in this age.

This statement has astounded me, for the poet is the one who preserves the dignity and splendor of expression.

And how can the fruit of the heart (the sublime meanings in poetry and prose), which are bought with one’s soul, be equated with words sold for a morsel of bread (those who sell their poetry for sustenance only, not for meaning)?

O heavens, how did these knots (secrets) that tightened their belt around the waist of the unseen escape from your hand?

The matter has become so difficult that it is being handled with toes (a metaphor for complexity). O Lord, undo this knot in the talisman of my explanation!

Those who hoard silver, yet are dead in their love of gold, have compared the coinage of this explanation (silver, as if it were a beautiful silver body) to their fleeting gold.

Whoever sells this coin, shining like daylight, for money, has received a meager price for it, and in return has given a pearl that illuminates the darkness.

Therefore, we find these wise men (the most knowledgeable) appearing in lower worldly ranks, even though in reality, in the higher Kingdom, they are in the highest ranks.

And he whose head was adorned with gold (sold his poetry for a price). In the Sultan’s court, the last morsel he will taste in his life will be the taste of iron (the sword or death).

Part Fourteen The Superiority of Composing Speech in Poetry

Part Four (verses 37-48), where the poet arrives at the essence of his advice to poets; For him, poetry is not a luxury, but rather the fruit of “the Sharia” and the product of “nighttime seclusion,” and it is the only path to attaining the power of meanings.

He who is like mercury (as if he moves like mercury) does not grieve, nor does he covet gold, he is transformed into pure silver in his clarity, and the sultan’s sharp swords do not harm him. Because he rose above the thresholds of power and kings.

And if your words become pure honey (honeycomb) of wisdom, do not sell them for a paltry price, nor scatter this honeycomb before the flies of greed or the ignorant.

Do not claim intoxication (divine love) until you have drunk a cup of the drink of knowledge or the Most High Truth (for you have not yet attained it), and until they understand and hear the word for themselves. Do not utter it on their tongues, even if it is a pure word and an answered prayer.

And beware of pursuing poetry before you make the tolerant Sharia (the Quran and Islam) your guiding light; for true fame is that which is based on the authenticity of religion.

For poetry (built upon truth) will elevate you to the station of the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, and grant you absolute dominion over the realm of spiritual meanings.

And through the strength of your adherence to the Shari’ah (the true Islamic religion), your poetry will reach the heavens, until it seems as if the shadow of your belt extends to touch the constellation of Gemini, with its high status and importance

And poetry will crown you with the title of Prince (Prince of Words) among creation; In accordance with the well-known saying: Poets are the masters of words.

Just as the celestial sphere never ceases its rotation, you should never rest or let your ambition wane until you craft words that reach the grandeur of the heavens.

Be like a candle in its humility (head bowed), dead within yourself to worldly desires during the day, and alive through nighttime prayers to the Almighty and contemplation, in your night.

And when your thought reaches the peak of power and vigor, the swift rotation of the heavens will submit to you, and yield before the dominion of your mind.

It is better for you to be deliberate and not easily satisfied with your words, so that your words may emerge of high standing.

For whatever is revealed to you behind the veil of this world, if you are not content with it as your ambition (do not be satisfied with a little elevation), then God will grant you something better and more lasting (always continue to ascend in your thinking until God grants you the highest ranks).

Part Fourteen The Superiority of Composing Speech in Poetry

(Verses 49-66), where in this section, the poet transitions from the role of “teacher” to that of “manifest creator,” proclaiming himself the “magician of eloquence” who transformed his city, Ganja, into a new Babylon of knowledge, and his poetry into a “permissible magic” that revives even the most decayed bones.

If you achieve the most precious accomplishments or the gems of knowledge and art, do not boast of them before others. For the boundless ocean of the human mind (the heart) is far wider and more precious than the jewel you just acquired.

And everyone who has raised the banner of eloquence on this path has eclipsed the sun’s light and surpassed the moon in its orbit and the splendor of its beauty.

Even if the breath and words of this traveler (the poet) did not warm others along this path, he did not slow his pace, his enthusiasm, or his energy on this vibrant, crowded road, not even for a moment.

And in the race of blazing thought, he outpaced the rotation of the celestial sphere, yet he did not forget his decorum and humility before the majesty of Creation

For he made the feathers of the wing of the great angel Gabriel a mount for His thought, and the wing of Israfil a fan for His heart (a metaphor for soaring in the highest realm with His thought).

So do not let this harvest (my poetry) be trampled underfoot by the ignorant, nor grant the end of this thread of secrets (the Book of the Treasury of Secrets) to anyone.

For if every bird (every person on earth) were capable of consuming figs (lofty meanings), the table of wisdom would be emptied of everything; for this sustenance is attained only by the elite.

I am the one who has grasped the very essence of truth in this manner, and I deserve to be pondered deeply. Because I brought something strange and unique, in this way.

And through me, poetry became a sanctuary for worship (the hermitage of the devout ascetic), and the poet’s station was freed from the taverns of frivolity to ascend to the highest sanctity.

And the ascetics and monks rushed towards me, casting aside their rags and garments of disbelief, submitting to the authority of my eloquence.

For I am like the red rose that still tender, young bud; I still await the breath of acceptance from the north wind, to blossom fully.

And if I were to reveal the essence of my exquisite, sublime words, the sound of my fame would be like the blowing of the trumpet on the Day of Resurrection.

And all of existence, from its ancient to its modern, would be captivated by me. I have made eloquence a magic, and the effect of this magic is upon all of creation.

My art (poetry) has robbed the magicians of their patience, and my eloquent magic has become a subtle magic that captivates the hearts of angels.

And Babylon, which was filled with magic, is in truth my city of Ganja, which burned (with its knowledge) the magic of angel Harut, and Venus is my mind, which illuminates the stars.

And Venus in this the region is located in the constellation of Libra (justice and balance); Therefore, its logic is purely spiritual.

For my permissible magic has become my sustenance in the dawn hours, and it has, with its authenticity, superseded those magical copies of angel Harut in Babylon.

And the image of the poet Nizami is nothing but a human imagination, but this imagination has spoken and come alive thanks to my permissible (poetic) magic.

Sufi and Gnostic Meanings, and Commentary on the Poet’s Verses

Poetry as “Alchemy”: The poet establishes the idea that metrical poetry is not for amusement, but rather a “golden path” that surpasses prose in its ability to contain “the treasures of both worlds.” He believes that the balance (Tarazu) is what bestows upon speech the quality of “essence.”

The Poet’s Sanctification (Verse 9): This verse is the axis in this part; Where the poet Nizami Ganjavi places poets in a rank immediately following prophets in the “rank of grandeur,” and this veneration stems from the fact that both are sources of spiritual enlightenment for humanity.

The duality of “brain and cortex”: The poet uses the metaphor of “head and tail” to illustrate that prophets and poets are the essence of creation, while the rest of the sciences and the arts are nothing but superficial appearances.

The chemistry of “the date”: “An nih sukhn parhāy az jān būd”; in mysticism, truthful speech is the “embodiment” of the soul, and the poet sees his poetry as being stirred by the water of the heart and chewed by his teeth; Therefore, it is nourishment for the soul (a fresh drink) and not merely sounds.

The station of “Mahram Dost”: Making the poet a sanctuary for the Creator means that true poetry is a kind of “revelation,” where the veil is lifted from the hidden meanings.

The secret of “Manqar Gil”: Clay (Gil) is the body, and the beak is the tongue. The poet affirms that poetic expression is the tool with which a person “sculpts” their soul to reveal its beauty.

The Fire of Thought (Atash Fikret): Profound thought in poetry acts like a fire that purifies the poet from their material impurities, allowing them to become “royal” in nature.

A spirit like a swallow building its nest, sculpted and fashioned with its beak from dust and clay (the suffering of the body and the material world), little by little.

Fikret Khayideh be dandan del: An idea chewed and torn apart by the fangs of the heart due to intense effort and deep thought (a reference to the intense psychological and intellectual suffering necessary to create a work of art)

The secret of “Sar Zanu” (verses 15-18): Here the poet establishes the concept of “observation”; The knee is not a place of rest, but rather the “school” of the sage. When the poet rests his head on his knee, he withdraws into himself like a “ring,” and this ring is what grants him “divine authority” and makes him independent of the sultans’ thresholds.

The superiority of “verse”: The poet sees prose as “water wasted” due to worries of living (bread (yak nani), while metered poetry is the “key” that pierces the egg of the sky, and “meter” and “rhyme” are what transform the poet’s words into a (sapphire) that endures through time.

Poetry as “offspring” (verse 23): The poem is not merely words, but rather “Farzand Jan” (Son of the soul), and this organic connection between the poet and his poetry is what makes “Falak Janbari/The Arched Sky” his servant.

The chemistry of rupture: “Jan Shikand Baz Durustush Kund” is an allusion to the concept of “annihilation and permanence.” The bowing of the body and the breaking of the soul in contemplation are the only way to rebuild the perfect human being.

The poet’s lips and the lips of the soul: “Jan bih lab Ayd”; True poetry is uttered in the state of “spiritual throes,” where the soul merges with the word before it is spoken.

Sultan of “Wilayat-e-Sittan”: The poet affirms that metrical poetry, his words, need not the gifts of kings, for his wisdom (in its structured form) is what grants him “authority” over hearts and the heavens.

The chemistry of words and money: The poet establishes a harsh comparison; Poetry that springs from “Mevih Dil” (fruit of the heart) cannot be sold for “Nan” (bread), for its value is “Jan” (soul). Whoever does so is like one who trades “Durr Shab Afrouz” (a pearl that illuminates the night) for mere “Sang” (stone).

The secret of “Zarkash” and “Ahan”: This is the most powerful image in this section, by the poet; Where he warns poets against the allure of sultans’ gold (Zarkash), considering that this gold ultimately turns into iron (Ahan) that seizes necks or takes lives.

The station of Venus and Jupiter: It employs two systems of astrological terminology; Jupiter is the planet of wisdom, and Venus is the planet of beauty and song. The poet sees his poetry as encompassing both, even surpassing the historical magic of Harut (and what was revealed to the two angels Harut and Marut in Babylon).

The Knots of Heaven (Verse 31): The poet challenges the heavens to have concealed secrets whose knots even rhymed verse could not unravel. He believes that metrical language is the only one capable of opening the closed doors of destiny.

Concept and arrangement of the verses

The changing status of art: The poet laments that poetry and oratory, once sharp, noble, and held in high esteem like “knights,” have now become a “curse” (a heavy and burdensome weight).

Contradiction and balance: The contrast between “knights” (symbolizing dignity and pride) and “curse” (symbolizing slowness and heaviness), along with the pun and repetition of the word “eater,” reveals the miserable state of the poets of that era.

Avoiding exaggeration and pretensions: The poet warns poets and scholars that before reaching spiritual maturity and attaining divine grace, they should not claim perfection or the intoxication of divine love.

Authenticity of understanding Experience: Speech should stem from genuine experience and inner understanding.

If the audience is not ready to listen, or if your words don’t resonate with them, don’t force them to accept them.

Wise silence: Instead of chattering and spreading misinformation, it’s better to remain silent so that your words don’t lose their value and credibility.

The Chemistry of Self-Sufficiency (Verse 37): The poet alludes to the tragedy of poets who sold themselves to the court; For the mercury (the poet), when it prepares to consume gold, loses its purity. The poet believes that the poet’s “honor” lies in being an independent “silver,” untouched by the sultan’s cruel swords.

The twinning of “poetry and law” (verses 40-42): This is the poet’s literary constitution. Poetry without divine law is mere amusement, and only through divine law does the poet attain the station of “Sidrat al-Muntaha” (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary). Indeed, linking poetry to divine law is what allows the poet’s “shadow” to transcend earthly boundaries and reach the constellation “Al-Jawzaa” (Gemini).

The Station of “Princes of Eloquence” (verse 43): The poet borrows this saying to emphasize that true authority is not the power of the sword, but the power of “expression” by which the poet holds sway over hearts.

The secret of “Shab Zandeh Dari” (verse 45): For the poet, poetry is the product of “spiritual discipline.” The poet is like a candle, burning in the night (lighting his fire) to illuminate the path for others, and this “burning” is what transforms “Tak Andisha” (thought) into a force that subdues the heavens.

The philosophy of “Dir Pasandi” (verses 47-48): The poet advises “patience” and not being satisfied with limited perfection; The soul that is not content with little knowledge will have the door opened to something greater.

The Station of “Maghz wa Post” (verse 49): The poet reiterates that the search is not for the substance of the poem (the essence), but for the “core of meaning”.

The Ascent of Thought (verse 53): The image of using “Gabriel’s wings.” and Israfil means that versified poetry is not a product of a material mind, but rather a “spiritual ascent” by which the poet transcends the limits of humanity.

Permissible magic: a system that considers itself a (nullifying) the magic of angel Harut. Prose is a false magic when compared to poetry, which possesses a revitalizing power for the imagination.

Babylon Ganja (verse 63): Here the poet boasts of his homeland; He transformed Ganja into a center of wisdom comparable to historical Babylon, but with the sanctity of spiritual logic, not the defilement of magic.

Enduring After Annihilation (Verse 66): The poet concludes with a dazzling Sufi humility; And this is his final message in the realm of discourse: that the spirit is the king, and permanence belongs to it and its effects.

The station of “the stranger”: In gnosis, the gnostic is a stranger in his world. The poet believes that the “exile” of his poetry is the secret of its value (Didanī Arzam).

The breaking of the “belt”: Making the monks throw off their belts in submission to his poetry means that the “truth” he disseminated in his treasury (the Book of the Treasury of Secrets) is universal and dominant over all religions.
