Learning from the morning how to be White-Faced through Truthfulness

English Translation

Indeed, the abundance of goodness begins with the name of God, in the register of dawn; and through this opening, one can access the essence of truth hidden within the morning.

For the truthful (the sincere) do not suffer in the pursuit of sustenance. The morning bread emerges hot even from the cold oven.

And though white clouds rarely bring rain, the morning’s brow oozes a heavenly abundance like rain.

Weeping continually polishes the rust of sorrow from the mirror of the heart. For it is the tears of the stars (the dew) that make the morning pure in appearance.

And he whose heart is drenched in blood (suffering from the pain of life) finds it difficult to suppress his complaint; so he is forced during the morning to breathe freely, for the morning opens his heart with light.

How then can the morning awaken those drowning in the sleep of heedlessness (the deep sleep) if there is no longing within their very souls for the Day of Resurrection (only on the Day of Resurrection will they awaken)?

Distance yourself from the false laughter of fools; for it is a colored twilight that stains the smiling face of dawn with the color of blood.

Only those with true insight perceive the might of love’s sword; for dawn dies smiling the moment it receives the first stab of light.

The scar of love is etched upon the lover’s face; how then can love remain hidden beneath the veil of morning?

O you who advise me, cease trying to mend the wounds in my heart; for the stars themselves are but stitches, revealing the wound of dawn, not concealing it.

So be content to merely observe from afar. For dawn—despite its proximity to the sun—reaps nothing from it but cold sighs (the morning breeze).

And likewise, beauty remains protected in the sanctuary of modesty. But when the sun pulls the veil (collar) of dawn to shine upon it, its beauty melts away and vanishes.

It is the sleep of heedlessness that deprives us of the blessings of the pre-dawn hours (the time before sunrise), otherwise, divine grace during the morning is never lacking.

As soon as the soul gathers its strength in the morning, in this dark world, the radiant sun places a kiss of love upon its lips to silence it (as if stifling the dawn).

And ultimately, integrity is the polisher of the heart. For truth is what brought forth the radiant dawn (victorious) from the darkness of night.

If the sustenance of the truthful is not the blood of the heart (pain), then why does the sun’s disc dip the bread of dawn in the blood of twilight, O Sa’ib?

Gnosis and Aesthetic Meanings

In this Ghazal, Sa’ib establishes the foundation for “the gnosis of dawn.” He believes that truth (morning) requires sincerity to emerge from the garden of illusions, and the symbolism of the “narrative oven” points to the station of “provision without cause” for the truthful. He also calls for the “eloquence of silence” (a colt of the heart) upon perceiving the luminous manifestation.

Summary of Ghazal

It is a message of “awakening,” where Sa’ib believes that man One must learn from the morning how to be “white-faced” through truthfulness, and every verse is an “equation” proving that pain (bread dyed with blood) is necessary to reach the light.

Shirazeh: Bookbinding threads (a symbol of cohesion)
Namakdan: The salt pan (a metaphor for (Charm and vitality)
Sabuk Maghzan: The foolish or the simple-minded (light-headed)

Additional Meanings

The First Verse

The text indicates that the rising and beginning of dawn, like the utterance of the words “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,” is the beginning and source of goodness and blessing in the book or the Diwan. It is a manifestation and sign of God’s abundant grace and mercy. Just as the inner meaning and beauty of the day can be understood from the name and appearance of dawn, so too can the great secrets of existence be understood from the phenomena evident before us.

Origin of the Verse

Mad Ihsan: Extension and expansion of forgiveness, and increase and expansion of blessings and generosity.

Bismillah Diwan Subh: In the name of God, the Book of Dawn. The beginning of the moment and the beginning of the book of life that opens with the break of dawn.

The title of dawn: the name of dawn, its beginning, and its appearance.

The essence: the inner meaning, the truth, the profound meaning, and the main theme.

Dawn as the beginning of good: The poet likens dawn to the name of God, with which every great deed begins. Dawn is also considered the “In the name of God” for creation each day, as God spreads His table of kindness and mercy upon His servants with the light and radiance of the morning.

Finding the path of truth through appearances: The poet says that through the signs of dawn, its beginning, and its “title” (the first rays of light and the beauty of dawn), one can walk towards the sublime “essence” and truth of the day and the order of creation. That is, the beautiful and wondrous appearance of creation is evidence of reaching the deepest secrets of divine wisdom.

The second verse:

Those with good intentions and sincerity do not suffer hardship, struggle, or anxiety in earning their livelihood, because God provides for them from an unexpected source and in a miraculous, divine way.

The poet uses a poetic image and a parable (the method of comparison): Just as fresh, warm bread may emerge from a cold oven, contrary to expectations, so you too, God will provide you from unexpected ways and without suffering that burdens the soul.

The main concepts of the verse:

“A warm, fresh bread”: An affirmation that God is the provider for His sincere servants, without any obligation on His part.

“Padash sadaqat”: Peace of mind and freedom from the need to strive for material things.

The contrast between the cold oven and the warm bread: An indication of God’s power and His management of affairs in ways that seem impossible to His creation.

The third verse:

This verse refers to Hope, the inner essence of pure people, and hidden blessings

Meaning of the verse

Although pale white clouds and outward signs do not promise much rain, grace and blessings pour down like a continuous rain from the face of a pure person or a bright morning.

Key concepts and symbols

White cloud/Abr-e Sefid: Symbolizes weak signs or situations that do not seem promising (because black clouds are usually harbingers of rain).

Face and morning/Sima and Subh: The poet likens the face of a sincere person (or dawn itself) to the morning. Just as a sincere morning, with its purity and light, overflows with grace, so too does the serene countenance of these pure people bring good fortune.

The poet’s rhetorical device: In the first stanza, the poet states a natural rule (a white cloud does not bring rain), and in the second stanza, he connects it to a human and spiritual concept.

General message:

To not be superficially, sometimes, where hope is scarce (a white cloud without rain), mercy can flow endlessly through the dawn and its clear face, by God’s grace, like rain.

The fourth verse

This verse refers to the effect of weeping and tears in purifying and cleansing the soul. Through the language and rhetorical style of poetry, it embodies a moral and spiritual concept.

The meaning of the verse

Just as weeping and tears from the heart cleanse the dirt and darkness from the mirror of the heart; The tears of the stars (morning dew) also reveal the pure, radiant edges of the morning.

Review and Analysis of the Meaning of the Verse

Crying removes the darkness from the mirror of the heart: Crying (whether out of longing, remorse, or spiritual understanding) is like polishing a dark, blackened mirror. Tears cleanse the human heart from the darkness of sin, sorrow, and neglect, bestowing upon it a brilliant shine like the dew on the sun’s face in the morning.

“Tears of the stars” is a metaphor for the dew that falls to the earth at the end of the night and the beginning of the morning.

The poet says that the morning dew (which appears as the tears of fading stars) makes the morning appear pure, clear, and white.

Semantic Connection (Equation Style): In the first line, the poet makes a moral/psychological claim (crying purifies the heart), and in the second line, he presents a natural reason. Objectively, and as an example (dew as well), it (cleanses the garment of morning). In fact, the poet considers weeping a source of purity, clarity, and spiritual cleansing.

Verse Five

This verse alludes to the difficulty of silence and suppressing sorrows at the height of suffering and grief. Through the presence of the clasp and the tear in the garment at the chest, Saeb portrays the dawn as a broken heart, unable to conceal its secret.

Beginning of the verse: With a heart burdened with sorrow and grief, it is difficult to restrain complaint and lamentation.

End of the verse: Just as morning appears and breaks (dawn), so too is it impossible to conceal and imprison the soul (to hide the light and not reveal it).

The main concept and the poet’s message:

The difficulty of concealing secrets in times of hardship: When pain reaches its peak, self-control and silence become impossible, and sorrow emerges unconsciously: intense sorrow is like light emanating from a tear in the chest in morning, unstoppable.

Literary imagery and metaphor (the rhetorical device of equivalence)

In the first line, the poet presents a general moral/psychological principle, and in the second line, he offers a reason and a visual example through a natural phenomenon (dawn).

The Sixth Verse

If there is no fervor and upheaval at the dawn of the Day of Resurrection, nothing will awaken the heedless sleepers. In these verses, Sa’ib sees that awakening the heedless is extremely difficult, and there is no way to achieve it except through a momentous event like the Day of Resurrection.

Study of Concepts and Allusions

The heedless/Grankhwaban: A reference to those who are ignorant of the realities of this world and have sunk into a deep state of heedlessness.

Revival/Ihya Kardan: This has two meanings; One is waking up from sleep, and the other is the resurrection of the dead on the Day of Judgment.

The fervor of the Day of Judgment: the upheaval, the gathering of all people, and the anxiety that surrounds it.

The sprinkling of salt in the morning: a metaphor for dawn. In ancient medicine, salt was used to awaken the insane or those in deep sleep.

The poet likens dawn to a sprinkling of salt, which contains the fervor of waking up (a reminder of the Day of Judgment).

The general message:

Ignorant people are immersed in their heedlessness, so the dawn of every ordinary morning does not awaken them. Every dawn is, in reality, a small resurrection, sprinkling salt on the wounds of those deep in sleep. If this amazing vitality and passion did not exist in the morning, it would be impossible for these heedless people to awaken.

Verse Seven

This verse points to the fact that one should not be deceived by beautiful appearances and cheerful laughter; Because the joy of this world is fleeting and ultimately leads to sorrow and grief, just as the redness of dawn in the sky transforms the smiling face of morning into a bloodied one.

Key Concepts of the Verse

Superficial/Sabuk-e-Maghzan: A reference to the naive and oblivious who see only the surface of things.

Farib-e-Khandeh-e-Shadi-e-Makhour: Do not be deceived by the fleeting joy and smiles of life.

Shafaq-e-Roy-e-Khandan-e-Sobh: Here, Saeb likens the morning to a person whose face smiles and brightens at the beginning of the day, but before it truly shines, the redness of dawn (the redness of the sky at dawn) stains their face like blood. This simile reveals that behind the morning smile lies a sign of blood and pain.

Main Message

This world is deceptive, outward joy is fleeting, and the end of this world is intertwined with suffering and hardship. Therefore, one should not rejoice in these fleeting smiles.

Verse Eight

This verse alludes to the concept of facing death, the value of liberating the soul, and inner revelation.

Meaning The verse:

The enlightened ones with pure hearts (the enlightened ones) realize the value and blessing of the sword of love and divine destiny (the sword of mercy); Dawn also joyfully welcomes the wound inflicted by the darkness of night, considering it the source of its own radiance and light.

Main Symbols and Images

The Enlightened/Roshandalan: The enlightened, the mystics, and those with pure hearts.

Tigh-e Mehr: The sword of affection, a metaphorical addition (love and affection are likened to a sword). It is like a sword that takes lives, but driven by love and the pursuit of perfection.

The Joy of Death/Shadi-e Marg: A paradox here, for death is not destruction or nothingness, but rather a source of joy and union with the Beloved.

The Visible Wound of Morning/Zakhm-e Namayan-e Sobh: A powerful metaphor and simile, where the horizon of dawn, piercing the darkness of night, is likened to a “visible wound.” Morning rejoices in this piercing (the death of night) because it heralds its emergence and light.

Basic Concept and Message

Saeb says that death is frightening to people (ordinary people), but for mystics and those with pure hearts, it is like the dawn. The darkness and death of the body (night) gives way to the light of the soul (morning) for birth, and the suffering and hardships of love (the wound of the sword) ultimately lead to the light and perfection of the inner self.

Verse Nine

This verse says:

The effect of love and affection appears on the lover’s face, just as the radiant sun cannot remain hidden beneath the veil (the edge of the garment) of morning. In the end, its light will shine forth clearly.

Key Concepts of the Verse

Dagh Eshgh (The Effect of Love): The sign and effect of the heart’s burning and its manifestation on the face through love.

Safha Semay Ashiq: The lover’s face and features.

Mihr: Here, it has an implicit meaning, referring to the sun or to love and affection.

Sitar As-Sabah/Daman Subh (The Edges of the Garment): The veil of the sky and its expanse at sunrise.

General Impression of the Verses

The lover’s face reveals what he conceals within, and true love, like the sun, never disappears; its light lifts the veil of morning, revealing itself clearly.

Verse Ten

This beautiful verse tells the wise man or advisor that trying to heal or hide the lover’s love and inner pain is futile and will only lead to disregard for others’ advice, without shame before people or scandal.

Meaning of the Verse

O wise one, O advisor, cease stitching and patching our broken hearts with advice; Just as the stitches of the stars unfold with the dawn and the light of the sky, revealing the wounds of the heavens, so too do your advice expose and reveal our hidden wounds.

Main Points and Line Arrangement

“Rafwi Sineh”: A reference to healing, soothing the lover’s heart, or concealing the secret of love through advice.

“Wound of the Morning”/Zakhm Shudan Subh: A unique metaphor and image in Saeb’s work, where the poet likens the dawn and the splitting of the horizon at sunrise to the opening of a wound.

“Sewing the Stars”/Bakhieh Anjum: Saeb compares the stars of the night sky to the stitches used to sew the darkness of the sky, with the dawn, these stars (stitches) disappear, and the splitting of the horizon (the wound of the morning) appears.

Equation: Saeb equates a mental concept (the futility of the advisor’s, sage’s, or counselor’s advice in healing the lover’s heart) with a natural, objective image (the fading of the stars and the appearance of dawn).

General Concept and Poet’s Message

The lover, broken-hearted, does not accept advice, and his attempt to think for himself and hide his passionate love is like sewing the sky with stars; just as the fate of morning is to tear through the darkness and reveal itself, the fate of the lover is to expose his inner pain, and advice only increases the pain of this wound.

Eleventh Verse

This verse alludes to the concept of maintaining distance in relationships and the dangers of excessive closeness with a loved one. Saeb uses a natural metaphor (the relationship between the sun and dawn) to offer moral and spiritual advice.

Meaning of the Verse

Be content to observe from afar; for in this closeness and connection, you will gain nothing at dawn but regret and a cold sigh. As dawn approaches the sun, it receives only mist (mist forms in the morning), a cold wind (a cold sigh), and the melting away of love (the sun dispels this mist with its scorching light).

Analysis of the elements of the verse:

Ba ngaah dur qani’ shu: Be content to see the beloved or desired goal from afar, and do not aspire to excessive closeness, for you will achieve nothing with this proximity: because with this closeness and union (that you intend), no accomplishment is achieved.

No benefit but a cold sigh/Bahr-i gaz ah sard: There is no benefit or result but longing, sadness, and cold tears.

Az mahr taban subh ra: For the sake of dawn (morning), he faces the shining sun (radiant love).

Key concepts and messages:

Maintaining privacy and distance: Some truths, beauty, and loved ones are only attractive and wholesome from afar, and getting too close causes burning and destruction

Apt simile: He likens human behavior to nature, where in the morning, when one approaches the sun, life ends and fades away. He compares the cool morning breeze to a “cold morning sigh.”

Poetic proportions: Between a “cold morning sigh” and “morning” (due to the coolness of the morning air), and between “bright light” (the sun) and “proximity” (the proximity that causes heat and burning), there is an arrangement of contemplation and proportion.

Verse Twelve

These verses emphasize the necessity of preserving modesty and dignity and avoiding ostentation for the sake of the continuity of values.

Saeb says:

Just as the sun, by disappearing behind the horizon, spoils the morning and the light, so too, if human beauty and values (such as goodness and beauty) are exposed and become visible, they lose their value and vanish.

The meaning simply:

If the sun hides its head (does not rise), it spoils the morning and the light. Beauty and grace retain no value unless they are Veiled by the veil of chastity, modesty, and honor (for if beauty is unveiled, its value is lost)

Review of Key Concepts and Symbols

Beauty/Goodness: In Saeb’s literature, it refers to outward beauty and inner perfection.

Veil of Honor, Chastity/Perdah Namus: A reference to modesty, chastity, dignity, and adherence to moral boundaries.

The sun remains hidden: A metaphor, meaning that the sun does not rise and remains concealed.

The Morning is Killed/Kushtan Subh: A reference to preventing the appearance of light and erasing the dawn.

Equational Style: In the first stanza, the poet presents a moral/mystical idea (beauty and goodness should remain hidden), and in the second stanza, he provides a concrete, natural example to prove it (the relationship between the sun and the morning).

Main Message

The true value of beauty (whether physical or spiritual) lies in concealment and humility. Unnecessary display and ostentation corrupt the essence of beauty, just as concealing the sun prevents The Dawn

Verse Thirteen

The meaning of this verse is that we are deprived of the blessing of waking up early due to laziness and drowsiness in the morning. Otherwise, God and the dawn do not withhold any shortcomings or good from us, and they are always ready to forgive and show mercy.

Meaning of the Verse

Sleep of Negligence, Heedlessness/Khawab Ghaflat: Sleeping in the early morning and ignoring the value of this precious time.

It Became a Veil for Us/Hijab Ma Shadda Ast: It covered our eyes and hearts like a curtain.

Kuthi Dar Mad Ihsan Subh Ra: There is no shortcoming or negligence in the kindness and mercy of the morning; the shortcoming lies only in the individual.

Important Points

Saeb says that the early morning is like a table of mercy and blessing prepared, and the problem is not with God, but rather our mistake is that we neglect this blessing and do not attain it.

Verse Fourteen

This beautiful verse points to one of the profound Sufi and ethical concepts, which is the value of silence. And the Dangers of Speaking Out of Time

Meaning of the Verse

Even if dawn wants to breathe, to breathe new life into this world (the dark house of the earth), the bright sun suddenly rises and sits like a seal upon its lips, silencing it.

Main Scenes and Images

Darkness: A reference to the world or the pitch-black night.

Breath: A reference to breathing, speaking, or beginning to act.

Silence: A reference to choosing silence and silencing others.

Similarity and Difference: Morning and the sun are portrayed as two people, one of whom wants to speak (morning) but is prevented by the other (the sun).

Main Meaning and Message of the Verse

In this verse, the poet portrays a natural law to teach humanity a lesson: the brevity of existence. Morning, in all its beauty and whiteness, has a very short lifespan. No sooner does it want to appear and breathe than the sun comes and erases it.

An Invitation to Silence and Secrecy: The poet says that in this world (the house of darkness), whenever you want to reveal a secret or greater truths, (like the sun) they will silence you, so it is wise to keep your tongue in your mouth and remain silent.

The world envies beauty: This verse shows that the world cannot bear to see the manifestation of purity (like the morning) and quickly burns it with its fire (the sun).

Verse Fifteen

This verse says that truthfulness and honesty bring peace to the heart, and the truthful person emerges from the arduous test of time proud and dignified, like the dawn breaking through the darkness of night.

Key Concepts of the Verse

Rasti and Sidq: meaning truthfulness, righteousness, and purity in word and deed.

Roshangar-e Del: the source of peace, purity, and light within a person.

Al-Wajh al-Abyad/Ro Sefid: a reference to pride, honor, and lack of shame.

Shabestan-e Sobh: meaning the darkness of night from which the bright morning dawns.

Main Message

Truthfulness and honesty may be difficult at first, but they ultimately prevail. Truthfulness is like the dawn that dispels the darkness of night, making the face of the truthful person bright and proud before all.

Final Verse

The main meaning of this verse is:

The truthful, honorable, and upright in this world earn their living through hardship, suffering, and enduring pain.

Rastan: the righteous, the trustworthy, and the honorable ones

Ruzi: sustenance, material gains, and livelihood

Blood of the heart/Khun-e-Del: a metaphor for intense suffering, sorrow, and extreme hardship

Bread soaked in blood/Tar-Shedan-e-Nan-e-Khun: a metaphor for earning a living through hardship, calamities, afflictions, and excruciating pain

Shafaq: the redness of the sky at sunset or sunrise, which here is likened to the redness of bread soaked in blood

The concept and arrangement of the verse

The poet expresses in eloquent language that this world is not a place where the pure are rewarded, and that the righteous must endure the most severe forms of suffering (a bleeding heart) in order to receive their sustenance.

A negative question: In the second stanza, Saeb asks rhetorically: If this were not the case, why would Saeb’s morning bread be redder (more bloody) than the dawn? The answer to this question is proof of the validity of the claim made in the first stanza.

Eloquent reasoning and imagery: It is likened the horizon red at dawn (dawn) with bread stained with blood. Through this poetic image, he depicts his suffering and pain in the pursuit of an honest living.
