They asked someone: What is a scholar who doesn’t act upon his knowledge like?
He replied: Exactly like a wasp that has no honey.
Tell the huge, merciless wasp: If you don’t give honey, at least stop stinging.
Saadi likens the “scholar who doesn’t act upon his knowledge” or the “person of influence who doesn’t benefit people” to a huge wasp, because the wasp resembles the bee in appearance, which works to gather honey, but it differs from it in essence; the bee gives healing and honey, while the wasp has nothing but stings and harm.
Saadi says, in short: “O you who possess prestige and power (like a huge wasp) but lack chivalry; if you cannot be like the bee that gives honey and goodness to people, then at least refrain from harming them. Do not be a burden and a pain on top of depriving them of your goodness.
Arabic Translation
قالوا لأحدهم: بمَ يُشبِهُ العالِمَ الذي لا يَعملُ بعِلمِه؟
فقال: تماماً كالدبور الذي لا عَسَلَ له
قُل للنحلةِ الضَّخمةِ عَديمةِ المروءة
إن كُنتِ لا تَمنحينَ العَسَل، فعلى الأقلِّ كُفِّي عن اللَّسعِ
يُشبه سعدي “العالِم الذي لا يعمل بعلمه” أو “صاحب الجاه الذي لا ينفع الناس” بـ الدبّور الضخم (الزنبور)، لأن الدبّور يَشبه النحلة في الشكل، التي تعمل لتجمع العسل، لكنه يختلف عنها في الجوهر؛ فالنحلة تعطي الشفاء والعسل، أما الدبّور فليس لديه إلا اللسع والأذى.
يقول سعدي باختصار: “يا من تملك الهيبة والقوة (مثل الزنبور الضخم) ولكنك تفتقر للمروءة؛ إن لم تكن قادراً على أن تكون كالنحلة التي تمنح الشهد والخير للناس، فعلى الأقل أكفف أذاك عنهم، فلا تكن عبئاً ووجعاً فوق حرمانهم من خيرك
