O Beloved (God), without whom the soul cannot do without, and for whom longing has taken hold of every beat of this heart; My soul is a gift in Your hands. If You graciously accept it, it is Yours alone, Yours to possess.
For the spiritual turmoil of the gnostics in their sanctuaries, and the yearning of lovers in their solitude, are not driven by greed for the gardens of eternity and their delights, but rather by longings that burn with desire to behold Your noble countenance and to meet You in Your most sacred presence.
If You bestow upon us the crown of honor and acceptance, our ultimate desire is a glance of Your favor. And if You strike us with the sword of affliction, our goal is to submit to Your will and be content with Your decree.
Whether You are kind to Your servant or overwhelm him with Your grace With blessings, or you subdued him and made him taste the bitterness of annihilation; For us, punishment and kindness are one and the same, and our judgment is none other than Your judgment, and we have no will except what You see fit with Your wisdom.
Even if fate were to cast a servant into the clutches of a ruthless enemy (an unbeliever) or between the jaws of a ferocious lion, true happiness and lasting bliss would remain the companions of those who attain the honor of knowing You and finding solace in Your nearness.
And wherever a living heart, throbbing with certainty, walks upon Your earth, or wherever a distressed, wounded hand is raised in supplication, For You, are their sole desire and refuge is only You.
I am not alone, O Lord, captivated by the chains of Your love. Indeed, broken hearts everywhere are consumed by longing for You, enslaved by Your radiant beauty.
Some have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of worldly pleasures, while others have focused their aspirations on attaining the bliss of the Hereafter. But we… we have no desire in either world (this life or the next) but You.
And the sustenance of souls yearning for You is but a moment of Your favor and tranquility. The awakened hearts find their solace in hearing Your call of acceptance and welcome.
And though our shortcomings may be many, and our stumbles in this world may be numerous, Your mercy is far more expansive and Your bounty greater. And every apology we offer to the highest heavens rests upon our hope in Your fulfillment of Your promise of forgiveness.
Perhaps our sins will vanish and fade away, scarcely worth mentioning, before the boundless ocean of Your grace and Your limitless, infinite mercy.
For no creature in this world possesses eternal life, nor any unchanging covenant in this world. The everlasting dominion and true permanence belong to You alone, O Living, O Self-Sustaining.
Therefore, every possessor of power, high rank, or authority in this world, all standing in need at the threshold of Your majesty, deriving their existence and worth from the abundance of Your greatness.
O Lord, Saadi’s tongue is incapable of encompassing Your praise or describing Your glory; for silence and awe before Your greatness are the highest form of praise that any human being or creature can attain.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Necessary Beloved (Nagzir): In Sufi philosophy, God is called the “Necessary Being”; thus, He is the “Necessary Beloved” without whom the lover’s existence is incomplete. Saadi begins with total annihilation (the soul and heart for Him).
Beyond Heaven and Hell: Saadi reiterates the doctrine of Rabia al-Adawiyya; Worship of God is worship of “love,” not “commercial gain.” The desire for Paradise is a veil for those who truly know Him, for what is sought is the Divine Essence, not His Attributes or rewards.
The Station of Contentment (Ra-Ra-Tost): This verse encapsulates the essence of Divine Unity. The seeker makes no distinction between the “crown” and the “sword,” for both are from the Beloved. The pleasure lies in the Divine Act itself, not in the specific type of act.
Absolute Detachment (Ma Ra-Hawa-Tost): Saadi divides creation into those of this world, those of the Hereafter, and those of God. Those of God are those whose minds are “cooked/ripened” by the love of the Creator alone, transcending the duality of bliss and torment.
Silence as the Highest Praise: This alludes to human inability to fully comprehend Divine Perfection. In a state of “astonishment,” the tongue falls silent and the heart speaks through silence; The inability to comprehend is itself comprehension.
The sermon
Means that the pinnacle of monotheism lies in emptying the heart of all distractions except the love of the Creator, and in absolute contentment with everything that emanates from the realm of glory, whether it be kindness or affliction. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it elevates the seeker from the station of “worship for reward” to the station of “worship for witnessing,” emphasizing that true glory and lasting tranquility are only achieved through annihilation of all else and acknowledgment of one’s complete inability to fully comprehend divine perfection. And silence in the sanctuary of majesty is the most eloquent expression of… Praise
