Saeb reaches the pinnacle of his aesthetic philosophy, based on the “method of equation”, where he connects abstract spiritual truths with sensory images from everyday life. This poetic expression revolves around the “impossibility of separation between essence and appearance,” emphasizing that the mystic who is annihilated in his beloved finds that distance only draws him closer, just as a drop of water is an ocean in its thought, and like water that is inseparable from the essence of a pearl.
The advancing age (the beginnings of a mustache) cannot separate me from those ruby lips that revive the soul. Have you ever seen a thirsty person, prevented by the crashing waves (as if on a perilous sea voyage to obtain the waters of life), from drinking from the waters of Al-Kawthar (a river in Paradise)?
And although these lines (the mustache hairs) in their early stages (like the green of a plant) seem to have robbed my lips of their apparent luster, the essential beauty, like the water hidden within the fabric of a pearl (the gem), can never be separated from it.
Just as it is difficult to pluck the arrowhead (the arrow of your love with which you shot us) from our hearts throbbing with passion (as if the arrow struck the heart directly, and the heart embraced it with its blood); how one could separate two hearts that have become one soul through their union?
And indeed, the dark day (the trials of this world) is sufficient to reveal the falseness of worldly relationships (distinguishing between the stranger and the close one), just as Al-Khidr, peace be upon him (the spirit), separated from Alexander (representing worldly matter) and left him alone in the valley of darkness.
And the pure heart will not be cleansed, nor will its inner self be illuminated by the light of guidance, unless the desires of the soul are dissolved. Do you not see that rust cannot be removed from the surface of a mirror except by constantly applying ashes?
Gray hair robs life of its sweet taste. Black and white in a person’s life are like milk and sugar in a single vessel; they mix in appearance (in the cup), but each remains distinct in essence from the other.
To soothe my burning heart, I sought refuge in the dawn prayer (a cool, soothing balm), and this suffices. For I am the one who carries in my heart (the liver is always used for the anguish and burning of material love) the marks of that burning, drawn from the light of every star in the sky (*as if every star were an ember beneath my clothes/body, when I gaze upon the Creator’s creation and remember the Beloved/God).
Even the worshipers of money will relinquish their love for gold from their hearts, at the moment of death; for whoever tries to cling to the remnants of this world by force will reap nothing but their sudden demise (a sudden cardiac arrest, a sudden death), which will forcibly sever them from everything.
And the wicked gain no benefit from the company of the virtuous, wherever they may be; for they are like the vain letter (the stranger/the one separate from the words of the book) that stands between the pages of the collection, without belonging in any way to the wisdom of its lines.
And the multitude of people around me only increases my loneliness and isolation. For I am amidst the crowds like a banner, fluttering in the heart of the army, its head held high above all, yet alone in its own world.
And if I ever think of leaving my solitude (my corner of seclusion, my asceticism), after a long life, I will find the world lying in wait for me; To such an extent that every feather on my wing would bear sharp, double-edged swords to kill me.
For he who abandons deep contemplation and reflection (placing his head on his knee to think deeply) will become a ball tossed about by the capricious whims of fate, having lost his center of spiritual stability.
And he whose feet are engulfed by the burning flame of divine longing will not be able to endure remaining in this world. Like a harmal seed leaping from the brazier (the place where burning wood is placed, upon which the harmal is placed to burn and produce smoke) with a single cry (the popping sound due to the heat from the oil inside, as if it were screaming from the intense heat), seeking release and escape.
And the infinitesimal drop, lost in contemplation of the vastness of the sea, becomes a sea in itself. So how can distances, however great, separate the lover’s heart from the essence of his beloved (the Creator/God)? For thought is an unbreakable bridge.
So do not ask about the bitterness (the burning of my heart) of my state, far from the lips of my beloved (which are like exquisitely beautiful agate/fiery agate). I have become like flesh smeared with blood as it burns, forcibly torn from the blazing embers.
O Saeb, no worldly drink can extinguish the flame of my sacred sorrow; for how can polish (which in reality only enhances the mirror’s appearance), however effective, possess the power to separate the essence from its origin?
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
Establishing Unity (The Drop and the Sea): Here, Saeb embodies the idea of ”witnessed unity.” Spatial distance vanishes before the power of thought and spiritual focus. The lover is the beloved as long as the “Andisha” (thought) is absorbed in it.
(The drop contemplates its own insignificance/creation, in contrast to the infinite vastness of the sea/Creator, and becomes a sea in itself, becoming part of this vast sea, as if it has become both the sea and the drop at the same time.)
Rumi: One drop and a sea, one grain and a desert.
Shaykh Baha’i: One drop and a sea here / One grain and a desert here.
The Eloquence of Ashes (Khakster): Sa’ib uses the technique of “asceticism”; for ashes (a symbol of annihilation) Humility is the only thing capable of removing the rust of pride and worldly hopes from the mirror of the heart.
The symbolism of Khidr and Alexander: Saeb reiterates the stance of “darkness” to say that worldly, material companionship (Alexander) ends at the first test, while what endures is the soul that knows the path to “the water of life.”
The theory of essence and polish: He concludes the poem with a cognitive statement; true sorrow/grief (connected to divine love) is part of the “essence” of humanity, and fleeting pleasures (drinks) cannot remove it, just as polishing removes the dust from a mirror, but can’t be parting the metal from itself.
This Ghazal
Points to the philosophy of “connection” that binds the lover (the created) to his beloved (the Creator), despite all the obstacles of matter and time. The poem elevates “essence” over “appearance” (mustache, gray hair, gold), and calls for solitude, contemplation, and longing that propels humanity beyond the crucible of worldly constraints. It establishes Saeb’s position as an “architect of independent verses”.
