Deep reflections on the transience of time and the deception of worldly hopes

Saeb Tabrizi emerges as a “painter of ideas” in this poetry, transforming abstract philosophical concepts about the transience of life and the passing of youth into tangible, material images. The central theme here is “renunciation of worldly desires” and admonition to humanity about the folly of hope, employing masterful metaphors from his environment such as “the spider’s web,” “the torrent of time,” and “the rust of regret”—a technique his school calls “creating exquisite content” (Madmoun Pardazi).

Just as spring departs and roses wither, leaving only thorns, so too does youth pass, leaving behind a poignant sorrow that dwells within the soul.

And all that remains of this fleeting, ephemeral life is nothing but sighs of regret, burning tears, and an ache (like an internal burning) from The pang of regret etched upon the heart

For in this world we are but a heedless spider, and what we leave behind on the walls and gates of existence is nothing but flimsy threads (like spiderwebs) of worldly hopes and ambitions, utterly futile.

And indeed, the pursuit of worldly pleasures breeds nothing but disappointment. The flower picker, who thinks he has captured beauty, finds nothing in his hand—after the rose withers—but the prick of thorns.

Those borrowed colors and perfumes/fragrances (the fleeting beauty of this world) have already set foot in the caravan of departure, and all that remains for a person from the garden of life is the thorn of humiliation and disgrace piercing his heart.

For the human body, created from the dust of the earth by the power of God, cannot stop the flowing torrent of life (the swift passage of time); what flimsy wall can withstand the flood of fate and time?

How pitiful is the heedless one who searches for traces of his past life; for how can a mirage (so fleeting and nonexistent in reality) leave a footprint upon the dust of time?

We have not reached the level of Farhad, the mountain-wrencher, in our striving. Blessed is he who departs this world leaving behind noble deeds that immortalize his memory.

And when the hour of departure arrives, the wealthy merchant finds nothing in his hand of all those dirhams and dinars but the rust of regret that has covered his soul.

For we, the frivolous ones, have no share in our deeds that benefits us, just as the pen perishes, leaving behind only the words and lines.

And the will of fate has decreed that the oppressors be given more time than The oppressed; for in this ruin (this world), the life of snakes is long, while the weak ants are crushed underfoot.

And there is no place for troubled hearts in the presence of love (God); for where refinement and striving are absent, rust accumulates and obscures the light of truth.

And the unbridled wine of love wrenches words from the lips of cups; so how can the lover’s heart conceal a secret when it boils with the pangs of longing?

O Saeb, the pleasures of life are tainted by the arrows of envy (a hundred/many envious eyes). Just as the fruit (joy) falls quickly, leaving behind withered leaves that weigh down the branch, so too does happiness pass and sorrow linger.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

The Philosophy of Survival (Traces): Saeb emphasizes that a person’s value lies in the “traces” they leave behind. Here, he refers to the immortality of thought and poetry versus the transience of the body and wealth.

Time as a Flood (Silaab): Saeb employs sensory metaphors from Indian poetry; Where age becomes a flowing stream and the body a wall of clay, confirming the inevitability of collapse before the flow of fate.

The Rust of Regret (Zeng Ephesus): A beautiful image linking the color of coins (dirhams) with the rust that covers them, indicating that wealth ultimately turns into sorrow and worry in the heart of its owner.

The Dialectic of Leaf and Fruit (Berg o Bar): Concludes with a pessimistic, cautionary wisdom; Joy (the fruit) is a fleeting moment, while sorrow (the leaves) is the enduring presence. This is a call not to be deceived by a “comfortable life.”

This poem by Saeb Tabrizi points to profound reflections on the transience of time and the deception of worldly hopes. The poem is a cry for awakening from the “length of hope,” demonstrating that all material beauty (roses and youth) is destined to vanish, and that permanence does not belong to wealth or power, but to intellectual impact and a spirit polished by the polish of love. It brilliantly embodies Saeb’s quality as an “architect of verses.” “The Independent,” where every house serves as a self-contained moral lesson and code.
