Wish the good for others as you wish for yourself

In this sermon, Saadi speaks of “the jurisprudence of practical conduct,” linking submission to fate, self-discipline, and compassion for creation, touching upon the truth that “humanity” is not merely a claim, but rather a tender heart and a humble soul.

We have erased our desires, inclinations, and personal choices with the pen of forgetfulness, and we have cast aside the willful “ego” (we have relinquished our will, desire, and choice, and surrendered to fate and divine destiny). For the true and beneficial choice is what the Eternal Provider (God) approves and decrees for this needy and distressed person.

So say to the one who chases after worldly possessions, coveting more than what has been written for him in the Preserved Tablet by the Supreme Determiner (God): Cease your greed! For every increase in worldly goods you seek only brings its possessor more hardship, burden, and consequences.

Know well that the drink of worldly pleasures is mixed with the headache of regret (the headache resulting after consuming the drink), just as the beautiful rose is never free from its thorns. If you desire the pleasures of this world (the sweet honey/drink), then prepare yourself to endure its stings (be ready to bear the consequences in the Hereafter if you pursue pleasures without restraint in this life).

O you who have been overcome by the veil of heedlessness and fallen behind the caravan of those journeying towards the path of truth, exert your utmost effort now to reclaim your place and join the righteous companions on this path.

For I do not see in you the person who possesses heroism and honor when you boast of victory in arguing with an unbeliever (a disbeliever). If you are truly a hero, as you claim, then shatter the idol of your (unbelieving) desires, and break that evil-commanding soul that has led you down the path of disbelief by turning away from the Almighty Creator.

For that heedless, ignorant person will not awaken from his slumber of heedlessness until death overtakes him, just as the shepherd does not wake from his sleep until the wolf has devoured his sheep and finished them off.

So if you desire good for yourself, then extend it to all of creation. For the soul that desires good for others will ultimately reap nothing but goodness and virtue.

The essence of humanity lies in extending mercy to the vulnerable. The true human being (on the path of God) trembles and is deeply moved when he sees (or learns of) the suffering of his fellow human being.

Indeed, the actions of God’s men (those who follow and remain steadfast on the path of God) are consistent with their words. O learned preacher, let yourself be the first to receive the arrows of your advice, and purify your inner self before you attempt to reform the outward appearance of others.

(Saadi gives advice to himself)

O Saadi, all that you hope for/seek/desire for yourself, of good and pleasure, is absolutely forbidden to you if you do not wish it with the same fervor for both stranger and kin alike.

Contextual and mystical footnotes

Erasure of Choice (Pen in the Secret of the Cross): In Saadi’s doctrine of divine love, human “choice” is the greatest veil. The seeker on the Sufi path sees that his own personal planning leads to ruin, so he “crosses it out” to enter into the choice of the “Distributor” (God). This is the station of “delegation” (tafwid).

The Unbelieving Soul (nafs-e kafir-kish): Saadi describes the soul as unbelieving not in its doctrinal sense, but in its behavioral sense. The soul that worships its desires and turns away from the commands of Truth is “unbelieving” in the blessing of divine guidance, and true jihad is to “break” this inner idol.

Humanity and the Trembling of the Wound: The expression “tan balrazd” (the body trembles) portrays compassion as an involuntary physiological and spiritual state. The gnostic does not empathize with his intellect, but with his soul, which sees that the wound of another is a wound in the body of the One Existence.

The Jurist’s Self-Preaching: A scathing critique of “pulpit preachers” who lack sincerity (rasti). Saadi emphasizes that words only penetrate the hearts of people if they come from the heart. “A warrior” against his own self

The Sermon meaning

It means that the perfection of humanity lies in the annihilation of personal will in the will of God and in feeling the pain of creation as if it were a wound in one body. It is important in spiritual and social development because it guides the seeker to the “greater jihad” (breaking one’s desires) and makes “compassion for the weak” the sole criterion for the sincerity of faith. It affirms that whoever purifies their inner self and is true to themselves attains the grace of the “tranquil soul,” which sees only good in the universe.
