One must never abandon hope in Divine forgiveness

This ghazal is a profound communion of hope and confession—a testament to an eternal intoxication born of the covenant of union. Here, Sheikh Saadi supplicates in the language of spiritual poverty and humility, acknowledging the servant’s utter lack of meritorious deeds or service, yet clinging fast to the unbreakable bond of Divine Grace—culminating in a state of ecstatic love that transcends the grasp of calculating reason.

English Translation

We have a Lord—Generous, Bountiful, and All-Forgiving—upon whom we pin our steadfast hopes, despite the multitude of our sins and the gravity of our transgressions.

Who else but He can open a door for us or resolve our troubles? Let us, then, humble ourselves in supplication before this most secure Threshold.

O my God, whether You draw us near or cast us away from Your door, we have no other refuge or portal to seek—save for the boundless flow of Your grace and generosity.

Our heads shall be raised high in pride and dignity, should You deign to bestow Your pardon upon this needy servant. Otherwise, we would not dare lift our eyes, overcome by shame and embarrassment at the magnitude of our sins.

For You created our very being from a mere handful of dust; how, then, could we fail to fulfill the duty of gratitude for this immense blessing?

For You are the One who bestowed upon us spirit, intellect, and faith; were it not for Your grace, we would be nothing but a heap of dust scattered by the winds.

You are with us in every moment—night and day, in the innermost recesses of our souls—while we drift on in profound heedlessness, day and night alike.

We make no claim to have offered You any service or act of obedience; rather, we are filled with shame and embarrassment at our utter failure to fulfill the duty of servitude owed to You.

May we never witness the day when we are turned away from the threshold of Your grace—disappointed, bewildered, and confounded by our sins, our heads bowed low in despair and despondency.

O my God, by Your eternal grace, mend the disarray of our lives; for we are wretched souls, exhausted by the vicissitudes of time and the turbulence of our days.

And even if we are not inscribed in the register of those drawn near—the sincere and chosen ones—to Your Divine Presence, then count us, at the very least, among the neighborhood’s paupers and dervishes.

I know not how to describe His beauty or His attributes; all I know is that we find no rest nor stillness, stirred endlessly by the melodies of His spiritual call.

For the Beloved gave us a draught to drink—a vintage from the dawn of eternity and the primordial Covenant. To this very moment, our souls remain in a state of dissolution and intoxication, overwhelmed by the ecstasy of union He ignited within us.

And when the calculating mind fails to grasp the dimensions and truth of this rapture—come, Sa‘di, let us cast ourselves into the wager of madness and sacred devotion.

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The Covenant of the Primordial Draught (Sharabi dar Azal): Sheikh Sa‘di alludes to the “Day of Alastu bi-Rabbikum” (Am I not your Lord?)—the primal covenant between souls and the Creator, Allah. This primordial draught represents the initial pull of divine love that Allah instilled within human nature (the love of Allah). Humanity remains bewildered and intoxicated by that initial draught, and the spiritual wayfarer’s longing is a yearning for the paths of that first union.

The Dervishes of the Alley, the Neighborhood, and the Threshold of Brokenness (Darvishān-e Kūy): This represents a sublime form of Malamati (self-reproaching) literature. The mystic refuses to view himself among the “elite” or the spiritually privileged, fearing the perils of vanity and self-righteousness; instead, he seeks to be counted among the destitute and humble at the Threshold, for Divine Mercy descends upon broken hearts.

The Impotence of Reason and the Frenzy of Love (Chū ‘aql andar namī-gunjīd): Mystics categorize perception into instrumental reason—which calculates costs and benefits—and experiential love—which casts the soul into the ocean of self-annihilation. When reason confronts the Beauty of the Transcendent Truth, it collapses, and “holy madness” becomes the sole wisdom for attaining the Divine.

This Sermon means

No matter how grave a servant’s sins or shortcomings may be, he must never abandon hope in Divine forgiveness and eternal mercy. This concept is vital to the spiritual journey and upbringing, as it instills a state of supplication, humility, and the renunciation of vanity, while fostering reliance on the intoxication of holy ecstasy—affirming that calculating reason stands powerless before the vast oceans of Divine generosity and grace.
