English Translation
When the sun cast down its shield, signaling its surrender (setting), the earth became like one who casts down his shield upon the water’s surface, submitting to darkness.
And with the setting of the sun, the light of the world dimmed and darkness enveloped it, and in the depths of darkness and the absence of the sun, the world became sad and gloomy with the chill of sunset, and the sun’s disk (the shield) lost its color, becoming a pale yellow with a reddish tinge (the small shield).
After the sun had cast down its shield (surrendered), the armies of night (the shadows and stars) drew their swords, eager to sever its head.
And the bull, whose neck they had adorned with blue beads out of envy, as soon as it fell dead, everyone rushed to draw their swords (The daggers, a metaphor for the change of fortunes when the powerful fall, where the sun is likened to this bull)
The night child took the garment of the nurse (the Earth/Nature) and placed his hand in her lap, tying the stars or the light of sunset (a reference to the day’s bell) to his feet so that he might appear with the arrival of darkness.
And to cure the disease of the dark night, filled with anxiety and thoughts (black night), a healing ointment was made from the earth/dust (a joyful paste, a meditation during the night, to bring peace and joy to the soul, during contemplation of the reason for the creation of the universe and the Creator)
This healing dust became like a balm, akin to the breath of Christ, to revive him, and water was sprinkled to extinguish the flames of his melancholy (the intense anxiety he suffered from)
(*When night falls, the movement of creatures (represented by the air) subsides, the heat of the day cools, and the daily preoccupations and activities (represented by the fire of anxiety, contemplation, and intense attachment) cease. At that time, the person, or “the patient,” finds his body calm and his mental anxieties cease, mingled with the absolute tranquility imposed by the darkness of night.)
The healing remedy/sherbet (inspiration) aligned itself with the patient. (The body), as if the medicine had no effect, and the house was free of intense anxiety (the body or the place that contained it), and the body was completely purified, as if it were in a state of complete death.
For the patient poured out a basin of blood, as if his body had rid itself of the disease through bloodletting, so that it would then turn from his head to his feet the color of black ink.
The inner color (blackness, night) emerged to settle outwardly, on the ground, and fate spoke through the language of the situation: The night that conceals things: He was among the disbelievers (a figure of speech where “disbelief” in the language means concealment and covering).
And at every moment, with every passing breath, the night sky, through mockery, flirtation, and seduction, played a new game and presented a new puppet (a display of magic and sorcery).
Sometimes it embroidered the moon’s silver robe with flowers, and sometimes it scattered silver coins upon the surface of Venus/The coins fell (The silver) from the flank of Venus (a reference to the twinkling stars around Venus)
And on such a night, devoid of all light, I was the singing nightingale of that garden (the garden of pure meanings)
So I mingled the blood of my heart (my liver) with my words, and kindled the burning fires of longing that I poured out, from the water of my tears.
And as these gentle words flowed with my expression, my solitary thought pondered this mystical advice.
Then a voice from the unseen called to me in my solitude (the calling of seclusion): Borrow from meanings and secrets what you can repay and fulfill according to your understanding.
(One should not burden oneself beyond one’s capacity or say what one cannot do, and one should borrow or promise in some way that one can repay, setting limits, and limitations in promises, commitments, and statements that you can respond to and fulfill).
(The poet’s self-reproach)
Why does water (tears or emotions) mingle with the pure, sacred fire of your intellect? And why do you let the wind (desire) steer the vessel of your weak, earthly body?
Meaning
Why do you silence your pure, radiant, glowing soul, and burden it with the tears of worldly and material sorrows? Why have you defiled the luminous essence of your being by weeping for this fleeting world?
And why should the wind (desire), a light and mobile element, be a first servant in your way in this life, and the vanguard of your physical body? Why did you allow pride, arrogance, and lust to dominate your earthly and physical existence?

In these verses, the poet delves into the depths of “esoteric knowledge,” where he distinguishes between the mortal body and the immortal soul, and warns the seeker against the prison of “outward senses,” which act like highwaymen, preventing the heart from reaching its heavenly ascent.
So leave your mortal body, and the handful of your burning and deadly dust in the coffin and the grave. Abandon your attachment to your physical body, and relinquish desires and attachment to this deceptive, glittering world (With beauty/ruby), and turn towards knowing the heart that seeks the truth.
Do not harm yourself with negative thoughts, nor direct negative and inappropriate behavior towards yourself; for if you shoot an arrow at someone else’s target, that arrow will eventually return to you. Just as whipping a horse hurts the horse’s (or rider’s) leg.
Therefore, it is not permissible for you to remain in heedlessness any longer than this. Pour out your tears of sincerity and devotion at the threshold of your heart.
(It is no longer fitting or worthy to remain in the heedlessness of neglect and ignorance. If there remains within you a source of life, a talent, an ability, or tears of need, then pour them out at the feet of your heart and spend them in knowing and purifying your inner self.)
Beneath the curve of this blue dome (the sky), with its exquisite beauty, tell the story of the heart. It is the most beautiful song that can be sung.
(in this world full of sorrow and pain, speak of pure love and of your heart; for words from the heart and love, like a beautiful song, are a source of peace and joy for the soul).
And stay away from the highwaymen of the outward senses who steal your spirit; for your spiritual path is known only to the heart, so know the essence of the heart and hold fast to it.
(To reach the truth, one must distance oneself from temptations, and the attachments of the external senses (sight, hearing) that distance him from the spiritual path, for only the heart knows the true path and the truth, and one must recognize the conscious heart and turn to it).
Those who have journeyed to the throne, freed from the shackles of the physical body, have bound the (great) wings of Gabriel to their hearts so that they may ascend with them.
(The pious with merciful hearts, who have relinquished their earthly bodies, have reached a high spiritual level, and their souls and hearts are at the level of the celestial realm and the angels closest to God, so that they surpass the angels with their great wings, and their hearts are the center of ascension and divine mysteries.)
And he who turns away from both worlds (this life and the hereafter) in annihilation in God, has drawn the essence of his spiritual nourishment from the sacred wall of the heart.
(Indeed, he who severs his connection with this world and the hereafter, and turns away from them, has drawn his inner strength and steadfastness from the steadfastness and focus of his heart, and does not depend on any material attachment, worldly or otherworldly, and his strength is drawn from within.)
If the heart were this crafted bead, and If the heart were made of water and clay (the physical organ, within your body), then the donkey, like you, would also possess a knowing heart.
(If the heart is merely a drop of blood or a mass of water and clay (body), then animals also possess this physical body; therefore, if the difference between human and the animal exists only in this physical body. Animals, like donkeys, for example, possessing both a body and instinct, would be on the same level as humans and possessors of the heart, and this is incompatible with reason and logic).
The eye and ear are filled with psychological biases and illusions; they function only to serve the external, superficial veil that obscures the truth.
(The external senses, the eyes and ears, are hindered from understanding the truth due to their material attachments. They can only perceive superficial matters and the material world, outside of it, and since the five human senses cannot enter the deepest chamber of divine secrets and the world of meaning as long as they are tainted by sensual and material desires).
You have stuffed your ear with the cotton of heedlessness, like the petal of a closed rose, and the narcissus of your visible eye has become a sore, blinding your insight and corrupting the essence of your intelligence.
So why do you worship the beauty of the narcissus and the rose in the visible garden? While the very essence of your creation was the cause of the longing in the rose and the daffodil, stemming from your inner beauty,
the outward eye, which is nothing but a mirror reflecting the images of every fallen and base person, is sufficiently quenched by the fleeting waters of youth.
(The eye that has lost its purity and become like a worthless mirror reflecting the image of every unclean and base person becomes a focal point for lust, and this flame of impure glances and desires, sensuality is guaranteed to corrupt and dry up the wellspring of your vitality and youth.
As for human nature, which uses reason as a mediator, it procrastinates and waits for the arrival of forty (the age of maturity) to begin the journey of guidance.
(When poetic taste and skill combine with wisdom and insight (thanks to reason), they embark on the path of development and bear fruit at forty, revealing the value of their maturity. The true value of thought, art, and human maturity is revealed and questioned in midlife and on the threshold of forty.)
And until the soul reaches at the age of forty, the spiritual journey has already cost a fortune, and much of life has been wasted.
But you need to reconnect with your Beloved now; so don’t read the incantations of the idle, and forget about the lessons of the age of forty at this moment.
Reach out your hands now and seek the unveiling of the secret. Seek a cure for this heartache from a grieving heart that knows the pangs of longing, so that it may share your sorrow.

(Verses 35-51), where in this third part, the sage Nizami Kanjawi moves on to reveal the greatest secrets of the universe: how the “heart” was created from the fusion of opposites (body and soul), and how this heart became “God’s representative” on the throne of Adam, warning the seeker against relying on his individual effort (the ego) without seeking help. With “the guiding companion”
And never grieve, my companion; For you have in this existence a comforter and helper, so break the neck of (existential) sorrow as long as the Beloved (the Most High, the Truth) exists and remains.
(In times of hardship and sorrow, there is no need to worry, for God exists, or there is someone to ease your burden. With a friend and support, you can overcome sadness and grief, so never lose hope.)
For the seeker (on the Sufi path) who is weak in resolve and has surrendered to sorrow, finds in the support of his companions (his fellow Sufis) a steadfast support that strengthens his spirit
(The burden of sorrow and defeat weighs heavily on a person, causing him to gasp and lose patience. In this state of weakness and helplessness, nothing restores hope to the human heart and keeps it resilient like the support and presence of loyal friends. Friendship and assistance are an impenetrable shield against life’s storms, the greatest support and the strongest force that saves him from sorrow.)
And when a warm breath of love mingles between two true friends, a hundred sorrows and griefs vanish, by the blessing of that single breath.
(When two people speak Like-minded and sincere, their friendship warms them, and the energy and peace emanating from this genuine bond completely dispels hundreds of sorrows and pains).
And when the first (false) dawn breathes, the second (true) dawn cries out in its wake, proclaiming the dominion of light over the stars.
(The first dawn (false dawn): This is the initial dawn that appears as a thin, vertical line in the sky, a “breath” (slow exhalation), the second dawn (true dawn): This is the true and expansive dawn that illuminates a vast sky and powerfully overcomes the darkness and the stars; this stage is described as “the cry and groan of the stars.”)
And the dawn (The first dawn), at most, leads to oblivion and humiliation, were it not for the second dawn that follows it, providing it with the aid of light and elevating its status.
(The first morning (the false dawn) will be humiliated and destroyed if the following morning (the true dawn) does not come to its aid and replace it. The false dawn alone has no value or permanence, and darkness will swallow it up again, reducing it to a state of utter weakness. This first light will not reach its full potential unless the true dawn follows it and joins it. i.e, No one reaches their goal alone, relying on their limited strength. That is to say, even the greatest phenomena need a friend and helper to shine and endure.)
From your own self (ego/selfishness), you will not achieve any success; therefore, seek the Beloved (the Guide or Divine Favor); for all goodness springs from Him.
And although the entire realm of existence is never devoid of benefits, there is nothing greater than union with the Beloved. Make it your ultimate goal.
For no seeker on the Sufi path can escape the need for a companion to aid him, especially this companion (the spiritual guide) who takes your hand when your steps falter.
As for those two or three companions (indicating their scarcity) whom you surround yourself with (the senses or the people of this world), they are fleeting and weak, indeed they are more barren (there is no good in them) than the circle at deserted doors.
So hold fast to the handle of the heart’s saddle; Perhaps the thirst of your soul will be quenched when you submit and become dust (the dust of the heart) under His dominion.
For when the Lord of the Throne (God) created this universe, He established two kingdoms: the kingdom of matter and forms (image), and the kingdom of the spirit.
And with the utmost divine grace and perfection, He poured forth a mixture in which He combined the physical body and the spirit in a unique harmony
(God, in accordance with His wisdom and perfect order, bestowed His grace and forgiveness; and in this way, He united and blended the physical (body) and spiritual (spirit) aspects together.)
And from the union of these two opposites (body and spirit) the heart was born; that noble offspring who was deemed worthy to be God’s vicegerent in this body.
(When matter and spirit united according to divine wisdom, a precious being called the heart (the universal human truth) emerged. This is the vicegerent of the Kingdom of Truth (the perfect human being) who attained the rank of divine vicegerency on earth. Indeed, humanity derives its value from the balance between body and spirit.)
The heart is the one in whose name the Sultan’s sermon is read; Because it is the hybrid mixture that combines spiritual subtlety and physical density.
(The human heart is considered the center of divine judgment and the sovereign of existence. At the same time, it is considered a magnificent blend and link between the material (physical) world and the world of meaning (spiritual). The heart is a common boundary and a mixed essence of the earthly body and the abstract soul; that is, it belongs to the world of the body and matter and is connected to the pure spiritual world.)
And the radiance of your complexion and the beauty of your physical appearance emanate from the star Canopus, which lies hidden in the sky of your heart. Your body and soul are but parasites dwelling within this heart.
And when the language of the heart and its secrets reached my mind, the oil of the soul flowed to rekindle the lamp of my insight, which had been extinguished.
(When the call of truth and the heart’s knowledge reached the highest degree of its perception and thought (its mind), its intellectual and inner power (the oil of the mind) was unleashed, illuminating the lamp of its being and soul (as oil illuminates a lamp). This event became a source of joy for nature, nourishing the soul and leading the poet to a level of spiritual awakening.)
So I made my ear a tongue to speak. By submitting to this circle of remembrance, I made my soul a target for the arrows of the call of the unseen (the caller of the unseen).
(In the circle of servants and listeners of the secrets of the heart, I transformed my ear into the tongue of the speaker (I became a listener and then a speaker of truth) and placed my soul as a marker (target) before the arrow of the hidden messenger (the caller, the message, the hidden connection) so that it might receive the heavenly messages.)

In this fourth part (52-68), we reach “the moment of the greatest conquest”; Where the sage Nizam Kanjawi is completely freed from the constraints of his senses and body, to stand after an arduous night journey at the gate of the Divine Presence, stripped of everything except his love, and permission is granted to enter the hidden treasury of secrets, unseen by the eyes of others.
Because of that refreshing (rich) spiritual nourishment, which I received it from the heart, my tongue flowed eloquently, and my soul (my very being) overflowed with joy and was freed from all sorrow.
(Because of that richness, prosperity, and blessing that reached me from within (the Heart), my tongue became sweet, eloquent, and articulate; and my being and nature were immersed in joy and delight, becoming pure and free from all sorrow and pain. When the doors of the Heart and the hidden world were opened to me, and I understood divine truths, this increased my capacity for poetry and eloquence many times over.)
So I poured forth from the spring of my eyes cold tears, for the fire of longing burning in my heart warmed the water with the flames of desire.
(Cold tears flowed from my eyes, but the fire within me and the blazing love in my heart warmed those cold tears. My cold tears boiled and became warm from the intense heat within me and the burning of my heart. That is, the fire of love and the burning of my heart triumphed over the coldness and silence of the tears.)
For I released my hands and freed them from that shackle (the shackles of the five senses), and the highwaymen of insight (the senses) were helpless and defeated, and I became the strong and powerful one (I controlled them).
(I freed myself from the shackles and highwaymen (the senses and the body); in this state, the inner sensual desires became powerless before this strength, and I became strong with the power of love and spirit. That is, when I relinquished material attachments and the deception of the external senses (the highwaymen) and entered the valley of self-knowledge and compassion, the inner inhibiting factors ceased their work, and my spirit gained ultimate authority.)
And in the course of this journey, I traversed both worlds (this life and the hereafter), until I reached, with a single heartbeat, the threshold of the heart’s door.
(The poet, in his tireless pursuit and vitality on this spiritual path, swiftly traversed two stages and stations until he finally reached, with continuous steps, the threshold and door of the heart’s house, attaining the level of contemplation and the discovery of the heart’s truth.)
So I was falling towards the heart, while my soul ascended with longing to my lips (the station of spiritual departure), and I had spent half my life awake until I reached this time (midnight).
(I directed my entire being towards my heart and abandoned my external self, to the point that my soul reached my lips (the difficulty of the path of conduct, the anxiety of the soul, and reaching the threshold of voluntary death or annihilation for the sake of God) due to the intensity of desire and fear; and in this contemplative journey, I spent half of my life and my time in the darkness and wonders of this nocturnal path)
And on the threshold of this sacred chamber (the sanctuary), my stooped posture became like a scepter, and I rolled like a ball, in submission.
(When I reached the back door of the retreat of souls and the hidden world, I relinquished all my existence and pride; my stature bent (became bent) under the weight of the greatness of truth, and I placed my head on my knees as a sign of submission and immersion in thought and contemplation, to obtain permission to enter that private sanctuary)
For my scepter became a submissive ball, and I curled up into myself until the hem of my garment touch my pocket, become so broken, I am.
(The goal and objective, once like a distant, unattainable ball, have now fallen into my hands (which have bent down); my situation has changed and become so chaotic that the lower and upper parts of my being (the hems of my robe and my collar) have become one.)
(The phrase “Daman man goshte gariban man” refers to extreme astonishment, emotional outburst, and a feeling of helplessness. When someone tears their clothes in a state of intense emotion, ecstasy, or grief, or when they are so agitated that they cannot distinguish the upper and lower parts of their clothing, it is said that their skirts have become entangled. It also indicates an internal revolution; that is, the poet’s previous values and opinions have been completely overturned and transformed.)
So I made my head a foot and my foot a head (I hurried aimlessly on my head), and my behavior became like a rolling ball and a bent scepter.
(I set off with all my strength and boundless enthusiasm (I didn’t know where I was); my body was like a ball, round and rolling with intense submission and obedience, and at the same time my stature seemed bent like a polo stick)
Then my apparent human effort collapsed, and I was freed from my selfishness. My insight saw the hundred in the one and saw the one reflected in a hundred mirrors.
(The will to act has escaped my control, and I have lost my selfishness and my virtual existence (I have become selfless); yet, among hundreds of manifestations and signs in the world, I see only one truth (God), and I observe that one truth in hundreds of manifestations. In this verse, the poet presents in the most splendid image the concept of unity in multiplicity and multiplicity in unity, where he says that when a person is stripped of his material self, his insight is restored, and in this case, he sees the manifestation of God in every atom of the world, and realizes that everything that exists is God.)
And so, my companions (outward appearances) was ignorant of this mystical path, so I was a novice traveler on it; therefore, my spiritual alienation was more bitter than any physical isolation.
(My companions (my senses) on this mystical journey are ignorant of this matter, and I am a novice traveler in a strange land; for this reason, my feeling of loneliness and alienation is more bitter and painful than usual loneliness, and on this inner path, my body and my animal senses (which are characterized by ignorance and materialism) cannot keep pace with the reality of the soul.)
Therefore, there was no way for me to cross that door alone. I had no feet that dared to enter unseen, nor a mind that could bear or accept the thought of returning.
(Here the splendor and majesty of God’s presence is embodied, as the poet finds himself in a situation where the greatness of the destination prevents him from entering, and on the other hand, the love of the goal and its attraction do not allow him to return. In fact, he is trapped between the glory and beauty of the beloved/or the heart.)
And when my tongue was tied with astonishment in that deep chasm, love intervened like a guardian guide, to take hold of my travlling means and lead me.
So I knocked on the door, and a voice from heaven (a spiritual call) asked me: Who is knocking on our door, at such a time? I replied: If you permit me to enter, I am but a human being (seeking his perfection).
(Human’s pursuit of truth and perfection leads him to the door of the divine house or absolute truth, and when there is a knock on the door, a voice asks: Who is this knocking on the door at this time? He answers: If God permits me to enter, for I am the seeker of human perfection at this divine threshold.)
Then the guides of the Holy Presence hastened and lifted the veil; They tore away from me the veil of bodily humors (all physical matter) so that I might be completely stripped bare.
(The guides and those close to the secrets of the hidden world have lifted the veil from the secrets of the physical world and the external senses, and in return, they have suspended or distorted the veil of creation, the world of composition (body and matter), and worldly attachments before my eyes)
(When I approached the door of the heart and the hidden world (the guides tore the veil): meaning the hidden guides removed the veils between me and the world of meaning, and I beheld the truths of the Kingdom and the divine mysteries.
And (the veil of composition was lifted): At the same time, the veil of the world of matter and physical structure (the composite elements of the world), which had been obscuring my vision of the truth, fell away and became ineffective. In other words, my connection to the material dimensions of my existence was temporarily severed, and my soul was able to freely enter the seclusion of the “Supreme Dwelling” (the sanctuary of truth and the heart).
And then, a voice rose from afar, from the most private chamber, calling out loudly: O Nezami, enter!
(Inevitably, from the most sacred and fertile sanctuary of the Divine Presence (or the private house of the heart), came the call: O Nizami, enter and be near this door, where one is honored to witness the Divine Mysteries. Indeed, this is the poet’s starting point into the world of spiritual discovery and Divine Inspiration.)
So I became the closest person, at that lofty door; And no sooner was I told: Enter (the center of the secret, the inner self), than I delved deeply into the most profound of secrets.
(After the poet leaves behind obstacles and material attachments, he reaches the secluded haven of the heart, and finds his way there, with a hidden calling, moving from the outside to the inside (the interior): The poet shows that true knowledge depends on transcending barriers and reaching the essence of existence (i.e. the heart)
Levels of Proximity: The call of “Enter” and the response of “I am immersed within” indicate infinite levels of divine closeness and journey of the soul; That is, the proximity to the truth and the discovery of secrets is endless, and the deeper we go, the deeper the levels of revelation become.)
The centrality of the heart: The poet presents his basic Sufi view, where the human heart is considered a mirror for the manifestation of divine lights and a center for ruling the universe)
And I found a sacred court, radiant with the lights of majesty, a court veiled from the eyes of others (strangers) and the envious, whose veils were sewn shut, so that they could never see it.
(I entered a magnificent palace and place, which were very bright and shining; they possessed such grandeur and beauty that the eyes of the envious and wicked were blinded by the beauty of this place, and they could not harm them. That is, it possesses a glory and power that makes it safe from the evil eye and the envy of enemies, and its greatness dazzles and weakens the eyes of the evildoer.)
We now reach the conclusion of the Night and Heart’s Ascension, where the veil is fully lifted for the poet Nizami. He witnesses the Divine Court embodied in his inner powers, and then Truth speaks within his heart, commanding him to silence and complete detachment through the gates of spiritual struggle.
Seven successors (the seven planets as cosmic forces, or the seven senses and powers of the human body) dwell in one house (the structure of the body), and seven cosmic tales are condensed into one human myth.
(In classical literature and ancient astronomy, this term refers to the seven planets known in antiquity: the Moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn), which were known as the successors of the Earth and responsible for its affairs. In traditional medicine and mysticism, it also refers to the “seven vital internal organs of the body” (such as the liver, heart, and lungs) or the “seven senses and internal powers” that represent the soul in the body.)
(Unity in multiplicity: The world around us (and likewise the existential structure of humankind) appears fragmented.) and multifaceted (seven successors and seven stories, the second writing, Haft Peker), but when a person attains inner knowledge and the essence of truth, they realize that all these scattered parts are united into one entity, and all tell one story and one purpose (one verse and one legend).
This verse teaches us that the apparent multiplicity and diversity of the world and humanity are connected in their essence to one origin and one truth (which is the essence of truth or the human spirit).
And the vastness of the kingdom contained within this earthly structure is greater than that contained within the revolving spheres; how fortunate is this human being, chosen by the Creator to contain this treasure!
(The dominion and grandeur of the kingdom [of the human heart] surpass the realms of the heavens and the cosmos. Blessed is this earthly body (humanity) that enjoys such a sublime kingdom and grandeur. Although the heavens appear vast and majestic on the surface, the greatness of the human heart and the breadth of its knowledge surpass all the galaxies and the physical heavens.)
The superiority of the earth over the heavens: In the eyes of ancient philosophers, the heavens were superior to the earth (dust); but from the perspective of the mystic (the poet Nizami), because the earth became the cradle of human creation and the manifestation of the heart, it acquired a value and bliss surpassing all the heavens.
As stated in Sufi literature, the material world is the “microworld” and humankind is the “macroworld,” for the essence of the entire world is contained within the human heart.
And in the realm of the thriving soul, with its breaths ablaze with longing, the Sultan of mid-day (the human spirit or the active intellect) sits enthroned.
(In that nourishing atmosphere of the soul, where a warm and loving sigh flows, the heart sits upon a throne like a king in high rank, at midday, and human faculties and qualities (such as anger, lust, intellect, etc.) serve respectfully in its presence.)
And before it stands with all reverence and respect a knight of ruddy temperament, wearing a ruby cloak that glows with the light of victory and triumph.
(In this verse in his poetry, Nizami seeks to demonstrate the supremacy of the world of meaning (the heart) over the world of form (the heavens and planets). Mars, which in the sky symbolizes power, war, and rebellion, appears inferior and subservient before the majesty and glory of the king of the heart, shedding its cloak of humility. This image embodies the triumph of love and inner knowledge over all the apparent and material forces of the world.
Sorkh-e Savari / La’al Qubai: In ancient literature and astronomy, Mars (Bahram) was likened to the “Red Rider,” the “Sky Executioner,” or “La’al Qubai” (the one who wears red robes) due to its reddish hue.
Zafar-e Andish: In ancient astrological beliefs, Mars was the embodiment of war, military rule, conquest, and victory (Zafar). The poet Nizami considers it a warrior whose mission is to contemplate victory.
Beh Adab-e Pesh-o: Mars, with all its military might, grandeur, and conquering spirit, when it reaches the heart of the mystic or the ruler of the night, casts a spell. He surrenders his weapon completely and displays his civility.
Another interpretation symbolizes the mixing of blood within the human body, one of the four humors that make up the body.
There is a young man of bitter temper, standing as a vanguard in the hunt, and below him stands a black servant who drinks the dregs.
(Talakh Jawani Yazki Dar Shakar: The “power of anger” (anger and defense) is likened to a young, quick-tempered, and agile soldier, like the vanguard of (Yazki), constantly hunting and guarding to protect the privacy of the heart.)
(Zirtar Az Wi Sihi Dardakhwar: The “power of lust” (physical desires and gluttony) is likened to a lowly black slave (a pain-eater), lower in rank than the power of anger, who seeks only to devour impurities and material pleasures.)
Another interpretation symbolizes bile, dregs, and sediment (black bile).
And a fourth knight lies in wait, ready to cast his trap, clad in silver armor like a hero of solid, copper build.
(In this passage, the two systems of natural phenomena, such as the arrival of night, are personified as a fully armored and equipped warrior, dominating the world with his weapons (bow and shield).)
Another interpretation: Phlegm
For all these bodily tendencies and humors are but wandering, lost moths, and the heart is the central, unchanging candle. They are scattered and dispersed, while the heart is steadfast in the unity of its witnessing.
So I, armed with contentment, became a guest in the presence of this heart, and I offered the tones of my soul to sing in submission to the supreme authority of the heart.
(I am content to be a guest in the heart/He who is content with contentment is content: By practicing contentment and sufficiency, the poet relinquished worldly attachments and took refuge in his inner self (the sanctuary of the heart) and became a guest there.)
He surrendered his soul to the authority of the heart/He surrendered his soul to the authority of the heart (the king of the realm of existence, i.e., the divine heart) to become spiritually rich.
And when I saw the banner of the army of the heart raised high, I turned my face completely away from the people of the world and their nonsense.
(The banner of the heart is the flag and emblem of the army.) In ancient wars, as long as the flag was raised, the army was considered alive and victorious. The poet likened the heart (the center of knowledge, love, and inner truth) to the banner of the army of human existence. That is, I realized that the essence and foundation of life lies in caring for the heart and its structure.
(Roy Khod az Alamian Taftam): “I turned away from them” means to distance oneself, to remain distant, and to be indifferent. The poet says that after this great discovery, he distanced himself from worldly appearances, material things, and ordinary people (the people of this world) to delve deeper into knowledge.
And there, the heart spoke with the tongue of the unseen, addressing me, the silent, bewildered one: “O bird of seeking and soaring, transcend this narrow, material nest.”
(The heart said to the material and external language: “O tongue, you who are devoid of truth and merely an instrument, O bird of desire and lust, cross the cage and nest of the body and worldly attachments and soar.” In this revelation, the heart occupies a position higher than words and appearances, and calls the tongue to silence and helplessness before its greatness.)
For the majesty of my fire is too lofty to be mingled with the smoke of human illusions, and the mine of pure, malleable salt is not salted with these fleeting fragments.
(The fire of Muharram is not like this: for fire is a symbol of the original essence, the divine light, and the pure truth of love and the human spirit.) (Or the Heavenly Heart). Smoke also symbolizes dark attachments, the dust of the material world, and the lowly distractions of this life. That is, my fiery, blazing essence is not connected to or entangled with this dark smoke of material things.
The word “salty” here refers to meat or produce soaked in salt to prevent spoilage, a metaphor for the mortal, material, earthly body. The “salt mine” is also the source and primary mine of salt (the eternal truth of God). That is, my essence is the pure salt mine, and this fragmented, earthly, material body is not that original, salty truth.
The mystic’s heart tells the poet: My essence and existential truth are from the higher world and are unlike this earthly body and its base impurities. My value is far too sublime to be affected by the smoke and pollution of this mortal world, or to confine myself to this material body; I am of divine light and truth, not a piece of earthly, material flesh and skin.
My spiritual shadow is stronger and more enduring than the physical trunk of a cypress tree, and my inner station transcends all the ranks you aspire to.
(Honor and greatness reside in the human heart; for the heart is the manifestation of God, and its scope is wider than the entire material world (symbolized by the cypress tree = cedar and heaven). The heart tells the poet that to know the truth, one must transcend material things, for the heart’s level is higher than the throne and all manifestations of nature.)
I am an absolute divine treasure, not imprisoned in the fleeting bag of Qarun. I am with you in the very core of your being and conscience, yet at the same time, I am transcendent of your material limitations and beyond your constraints.
(I am an inexhaustible treasure, but I am not comparable to the riches of Croesus (My existence cannot be measured by material things and material beings). I am always with you, never leaving you, and the absolute and perpetual closeness (half with you and half outside of you): these verses represent the pinnacle of the concept of “the middle ground between manifestation and purification” or “unity of existence” in Sufism.
God Almighty says: I am not half of you (I am not a part of your being or creation such that you are not independent of it), but at the same time, I am neither separate from you nor outside of you.
This concept reminds us of God Almighty’s words: “And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.” God is present in every atom of human existence, yet He is free from the physical body of man.
To find God, one should not search for material things or distant places; for God is a treasure within man, and He is present with him in every aspect. When, though its essence transcends our physical understanding)
Then the bird of my eloquent tongue fell silent and subdued before the warmth of this eloquent discourse emanating from the heart.
(My words and speech (the bird of my lips) vanished completely before the breath of the heart and the exquisite words of my heart (its warm breath), and out of shame and respect, my tongue lost the ability to speak (I became mute and silent).
So I fashioned from my shame and bowed head a repentance, and I made the ear of respect a ring guided by the obedience of absolute servitude.
(Out of intense shame, I surrendered my refined ear to submission, and I placed the ring of my submission in my ear. Here, the poet acknowledges submission and humility before the heart.)
Shame of humility/Sharm Sarafkandi: The feeling of shame for sin or guilt before the majesty of God (the heart).
Ear of respect/Gosh Adab: A reference to the ear that listens and obeys advice and instructions.
Ring Kash Bandgi: An indication of accepting obedience (referring to the custom of slavery where rings were placed in the ears of slaves)
Then, the Master of the Heart renewed for me the covenant of acceptance and allegiance, and my name, Nizami, rose to the heavens in fame.
(That noble and generous Master (the Heart), through his love and care, revived the covenant of love, and by his grace, my (Nizami’s) fame spread throughout the world and reached the heavens in renown, and I became a famous poet.)
And when I realized that I had no escape from disciplining myself and embarking on the path of spiritual and psychological struggle, I surrendered my leadership completely to the Master of the Heart to be a disciple submissive to his arduous desires.
(Since the poet found no other option but to endure hardships and purify himself, he submitted to the command and training of his heart, where discipline here refers to enduring hardships, striving for the soul, piety, and practicing self-purification, which is the solution, the escape.) The only way, and the path to salvation
To follow the commands of the Great Master, the Guide, which is the heart, where there is no way but through the inevitability of purification, where the poet realizes that there is no way to attain perfection and knowledge except by enduring hardship and spiritual purification.)
Sufi and Gnostic Meanings and Commentary on the Poet’s Verses
The Contrast of “Colors” and “Lights”: Here, the poet relies on the principle of “visual contrast.” Light cannot manifest in its full glory unless the background is intensely black (Anqas Gun), and the blackness of night is the “kohl” of the eye that seeks the kohl of truth.
The Alchemy of “Black” and “Dough”: The poet uses terms from ancient medicine; The night is “sick” with melancholy (Sodaa), and for this sickness to heal, it needs a “joyful concoction” made from the dust of solitude and brokenness. This paves the way for “The Story of the Heart,” whose clay was created like a divine concoction mixed with love.
The secret of “The call of Solitude”: In verse 16, the caller of the unseen intervenes to urge the poet to “Deliberation” and not bearing what the soul cannot endure; for speech in the realm of the heart is a trust, and “borrowing” from the unseen requires a purity to fulfill it.
The station of “the death of the day”: the slaughter of the “bull of the sun” and the pouring of the “bowl of blood” (twilight) are mystical metaphors for “voluntary death.” For the sun of the heart to shine, the sun of the material mind must “cast down its shield” and surrender to annihilation.
Gaw keh kharmehreh badu der kshand
Chonkeh biftad hameh khanjar kshand
Its basic meaning is that when elders are powerful and influential, people flatter them and fear them (they hang a bead around their necks to ward off envy) through pretense and fear; But as soon as they weaken or fall, they all rush to strike them (drawing their daggers).
Khorramhara: In the past, it was customary to hang a blue bead called a khorramhara (or gachak) around the neck of a milk cow or strong animals to ward off envy or as an adornment.
Representation: The sun, which during the day, like a mighty sultan, conquers the world with an army of light (rays), and when it sets and its light dims, its armies (its rays or others) disappear, and darkness and night prevail.
It also alludes to the disloyalty of the age and the change in people’s (opportunistic) behavior towards those in power, during a time of decline and loss of authority.
Khaneh Soda: In traditional medicine, the human body is composed of four phlegmatic substances (blood, bile, phlegm, and black bile/Sodaa). The house of sorrows here is a reference to the human body in the darkness of night or the place where bodily phlegm accumulates.
In ancient medicine, when it was said that a medicine “cured” a patient, it meant that the medicine had stopped working and its effect had ended. Here, however, it means that the medicine of life has become intertwined with the patient’s nature and is no longer effective in healing, and that the patient has passed away.
Pardakhteh: meaning emptied and purified, that is, the body has been emptied of spirit and blood.
The magic of Venus and Libra: Making Venus play on the “drum of the stars” signifies the harmony of the spiritual universe before the knowing heart, which becomes the “nightingale of the boundless garden.”
Mixing water with fire: “Ab Darin” “Atash pakat chara st?”; It is an invitation to abstract thought; The sacred fire of knowledge should not be extinguished by tears of complaint, but rather it must reach the station of perfect contentment.
The heart is not clay (verse 25): Here the poet places the scalpel of essential differentiation; for the heart in gnosis is not this physical muscular organ that man and animal share (Ab and Gil), but it is the subtle “storehouse of secrets” in which divine lights are manifested; Otherwise, the donkey would have an enlightened heart.
The highwaymen of the senses (verse 22): “Two senses are like a race”; the poet sees the five apparent senses as the first obstacle. Because it imprisons man in the “periodic world” (the physical world), and the true seeker is he who breaks the veil of these senses to soar with his heart towards the Kingdom of the Throne.
The Deception of the Age of Forty (verses 31-33): The poet draws attention to a common psychological trick, whereby man procrastinates in his spiritual exercises. Under the pretext of waiting for the age of maturity (forty), the poet asserts that “the beloved is sought now” (yar kunun baydat); because waiting is procrastination that consumes the capital of youthful life.
The wings of Gabriel are in the heart: “Shahpar Jibril bih del bastehand”; in mysticism, Gabriel is the symbol of the active intellect and revelation. And the binding of his wings to the heart means that the ascension of the gnostic is not through pure theoretical reason, but through the illumination of the heart, which surpasses the station of the angels in its progression.
Heartfelt sorrow: “In sorrow, my heart is filled with grief.” Here the poet presents the most important concept in mystical literature, which is “the aesthetic station of pain.” A heart devoid of sorrow for the beloved’s departure is a dead heart, and the cure can only be found among those consumed by the same fire of longing.
The heart is the successor (verse 47): The poet establishes a brilliant existential philosophy; The universe is divided into matter (form) and spirit (spirit), and the heart is the fruit of the union of these two opposites. Therefore, the poet describes it as “hybrid” (i.e., a hybrid) because it is an isthmus between earthly nature and celestial lights. It is the offspring that deserved “successorship” because it represents the station of “the perfect human being.”
The secret of “Suhail Dil” (verse 49): “Suhail” is a bright Yemeni star. The ancients believed that its rising purifies the earth’s surface and gives jewels their colors (the end of summer). The poet sees in the human heart a “heart’s Suhail,” the source of light for the skin and the body (the surface), and that the soul and body are nothing but two parasites (parasites) feeding on the heart’s table.
Negation Reliance on the “self” (verse 40): “Az Tu Niayid Bih Tuyi Hij Kar”; this is a decisive mystical verse; for the seeker, by his individual power (Tuyi/the self), is cut off; Because human effort is a cold breath that only works when it is infused with the warmth of divine guidance and a guiding companion.
The contrast between the first and second dawns (verses 38-39): The first (false) dawn is a symbol of the theoretical mind, which appears bright but is then followed by darkness and humiliation (defeat), while The second (true) dawn is the decisive light that comes to aid the heart and open the eye of insight with divine assistance.
The station of “the Caliphate”: “My successor is the Caliph of the established Caliphate”; this refers to the secret of Adam’s creation. The heart is the mirror of divine manifestation that has attained the station of “representation” on behalf of the Almighty Truth, for it is the only gateway that can encompass the majesty and beauty of God.
The Ascent of the Heart (Verse 55): “Dar Tak An Raah Do Manzil Shudam”;The poet confirms that the journey of the heart is swift and fleeting; The path of “the two worlds” (the material and the spiritual), which the mind cannot comprehend, is traversed by the heart like two small houses in “a single breath” (yak nafas).
The symbol of “the ball and the scepter” (verses 57-59): This is one of the most eloquent images of annihilation; The scepter (chogan) is the tool that strikes, and the ball (goi) is the one that is led without will. The poet makes his body a bent scepter and his heart a ball that rolls in submission. A metaphor for the submission of human will to divine will
Tearing apart the “veil of composition” (verse 65): “The veil of composition is torn apart”; The spiritual traveler cannot enter “seclusion” while bound by his physical body, composed of the four elements. Therefore, tearing down the “veil of composition” is the station of complete “abstraction,” which qualifies him to hear the call: “O Nezami, Enter”.
The station of “the human being” at the door (verse 64): When asked, “Who is at the door?” He did not say “I’m Nezami” because claiming a name is selfish, but rather he said “Adamian/son of Adam, or related to the dust of the ground”, because he strives to fulfill the trust of the first caliphate, which his father Adam was entrusted with.
The station of “one hundred in one” (صد ز یکی دیده یکی صد شده): It is an indication of “the unity of witnesses.” Where the knower sees the manifestation of the One and Only in the multiplicity of cosmic mirrors, and sees all multiplicity melting away to return to the One Origin.
Employing “love as a guide”: When the “language of reason” (the tongue of philosophical reason) is unable to express itself and wonder is trapped in the tunnel, love takes the lead. Because love is the only force that holds the keys to navigate this dark path.
The Body as a “Microcosm” (line 69): The poet emphasizes the idea of the “cosmic human being”; the body is the “house” that unites the seven celestial forces and the spiritual and physical natures.
The Court of the Four Humors (lines 71-74): The poet showcases his scientific and mystical genius. The four humors of the body are personified as retinues and soldiers serving the king of the spirit (Shah Nimruz) within the core of the body (Nafsabad): blood is the red knight, yellow bile is the bitter-tempered youth (Yazak), black bile is the black servant who drinks dung (Dardakhwar), and phlegm is the silver-armored knight.
The Unity of the Heart’s Sun (Verse 75): All these physical and mental elements are scattered and dispersed (Parakandeh), while the heart represents the unifying candle that gathers the scattered elements of the seeker towards the One Self.
The Secret of “Ba Tu Nim Wa Za Tu Bih Birun Nim” (Verse 81): This verse is the essence of the doctrine of “Unity of Witnessing”; the heart, as a divine energy, represents the essence of man and his inner self, but at the same time it is transcendent and free from the earthly, clay-like form.
Concluding with Spiritual Exercises and Striving (Verse 85): Nizami concludes this treatise by declaring his complete submission to “spiritual exercises.” There is no unveiling of secrets nor ascent of one’s name in the heavens without taming the soul and breaking the desires of the earthly body.
