The Lover’s Heart is the Abode of Sorrow

This Ghazal represents an epic in “rejoicing in sacred sorrow/grief” and “the dominion of neediness for God”; Where Sheikh Kamal, with his mystical insight, weaves how “sorrow/grief” becomes a necessity for the soul, and how the beloved’s description of the lover as a “beggar” transforms into a crown of glory surpassing the might of kings.

English Translation

The heart that grew up loving you (the beloved) will never taste true joy without your sorrow. O my heart, drink deeply from the sorrows as you will, for nothing befits this state but this sacred longing.

For we are masters of pain, and this pain manifests itself in the burning of our inner selves (the inner, subconscious pain) with these parched mouths, those thirsty lips, and our eyes whose tears never cease.

For we are the bankrupt of this world (the materially destitute), yet we live under the shadow of kingdom (The wealth and fortune that befell us because of the madness of love for you) of Your sorrow that makes us see the pleasures of both worlds (this life and the hereafter) as worthless dust.

If You were to burn our hearts in the furnace of (the fire of) affliction, from our ashes would emanate only Your fragrance. For the fragrance of Your love has mingled with our very existence.

For I have been crowned a sultan in this world since that day when You (the Beloved) said to the critic (the watcher/the envious one/the gatekeeper in the heavens): Who is this beggar who never leaves our doorstep?

Our hearts were lost in the wilderness of Your love, and we found nothing but the gentle breeze of morning (the cool, refreshing winds of the morning), which undertook the arduous journey to bring us news of the heart-stealer, our Beloved.

And now, we know the value of our meeting at this very moment. When we lost the pain (the pleasant headache we suffered when we were near You) because of Your distance and our separation from Your neighborhood (Your alley)

Then the reason for the love of the insightful to You, will become clear, when the eye of that critic (who blames the lovers, the mystics, for their love of You) falls upon the splendor of Your face, like the moon; Then he will know why we are so enamored with You.

And since the pen of the poet Kamal began to describe Your beauty, the rose became jealous and started copying verses of beauty to adorn its gardens from the pages of our book.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The Paradox of “Sultanate and Begging”: Sheikh Kamal Khujandi excels in using “gnostic irony,” for when the Beloved (God Almighty) describes him as “Gada” (A beggar), for he sees in this contempt the greatest honor, because the Beloved “saw” him and knew his place. This is consistent with the position of Sheikh Kamal, who rejected praising sultans, preferring humility at the door of God.

The symbolism of “ashes and the incense burner”: Sheikh Kamal is referring to the station of “annihilation in the divine attributes.” Burning in the censer of sorrow/grief means purifying the soul from all human impurities. Even when the ego turns to ashes, the fragrance of truth remains shining within it, which is the meaning of the permanence of God Almighty after the annihilation of the servant.

The concept of “dardisar” (desired headache): In the “school of love,” fatigue and suffering for the sake of the beloved become pleasure, and Sheikh Kamal considers anything that connects him to the beloved (even if it is a headache) to be precious, and that “comfort/lost headache” away from him is the true loss.

A subtle allusion to “perfection” and “a copy of beauty”: As is his custom, he concludes with his name, accompanied by a gentle boast, for he believes his poetry has reached such a level of “perfection” and beauty that nature (the rose) learns beauty from his poems, which draw their light from the beloved’s face.

The essence of Ghazal

The lover’s heart is the abode of sorrow/grief that cannot be exchanged for the treasures of the two worlds, and love for him is an identity matured by burning (the fragrant ash). He affirms that the station of sincere supplication at the gate of truth is the true sovereignty to which even those who criticize lovers submit when the vision of beauty is revealed to them.
