Preoccupied with Life and Wealth is not a true loving of the Beloved

Sheikh Kamal al-Din Khujandi, in this Ghazal, speaks of a mystical epic about “Jesus-like detachment” and “the purity of poverty”; Where, with his penetrating insight, he weaves how relinquishing attachments (even if only by the width of a needle) is a prerequisite for the soul’s ascent towards the heavens of vision, adhering to his own principle of composing seven verses to form his poem at the pinnacle of verbal and conceptual perfection.

English Translation

O Beloved of the soul, would that our laps could be filled with the dust of your beautiful pain, let these patched, dusty garments, a hundred pieces in one, which we wore upon our mortal bodies, be the crown of our pride with which we boast at your threshold.

For the heart finds no peace or rest except in clinging to the dust of your threshold. May the sacred dust of Your threshold be our refuge and resting place until the Day when God resurrects all creation.

For we cannot truly feast our eyes on the light of Your clear vision unless our longing eyes are honored to behold Your presence and the abode of Your glorious manifestation.

So we pleaded with You, saying: Draw Your sword of power and deliver us from the remnants of our souls, and You answered: Indeed, killing you is a sin; So we said: Oh, if only this sin were an eternal chain around our necks, we would redeem it with our very souls.

And yesterday, as I was about to enter your alley, voices cried out to me from every direction: O you who have not yet relinquished the love of self and gold (the perpetuation of the self and the pleasures of this world), beware lest your foot tread upon our holy garden!

Do you know what the Spirit of God Jesus chanted in the ears of the lovers of the mortal world? He said to them: Consider how our selfishness blocks us from the highest kingdom because of a hidden attachment that does not exceed the trace of half a needle.

O my being (my body), let the beautiful sleep of this night be blessed in the company of Kamal, perhaps that Beloved (like the moon) slips in at dawn to steal our hearts through the rooftops and windows of our souls.

Mystical and Gnostic Meanings

The symbolism of “Half a Needle” by Jesus: This is a reference to a very famous mystical symbol in Gnostic literature. It is narrated that when Jesus Christ, peace be upon him, ascended to heaven, he stopped at the fourth heaven because he carried with him “half a needle” with which he mended his patched clothes. Sheikh Kamal Khujandi explains how even this slight attachment to worldly possessions becomes a “veil” preventing the soul from reaching the station of complete annihilation.

The Station of “Dalq” The patched one: “The patched one-hundred-piece rag” represents the identity of spiritual poverty, and Sheikh Kamal does not see humiliation in dust and tattered rags, but rather sees them as a refined “dwelling” because they acquired their fragrance from the dust of the “beloved’s threshold.”

The pun of “the sin” and “the transgression”: In the fourth verse, he describes the beloved, when he refrains from drawing the sword, since killing lovers is a “sin,” and the lover here accepts to bear the burden of this sin only to attain the honor of death (annihilation) at the hands of the eternal beloved.

Critique of “The Lover of Secrets and Burdens”: Sheikh Kamal points to the nature of the behavior; He who is preoccupied with his head (his life) and his wealth (his possessions) is not a true lover, for the “doctrine of love” is based on the sacrifice of the soul and the transcendence of material desires.

Summary of the Ghazal

In this Ghazal, Sheikh Kamal Khujandi emphasizes that whoever seeks an ascension like that of Christ must cleanse himself of all material attachments, even by the smallest amount (half a needle’s worth), and one finds no rest except at the threshold of the Most High Truth, and the illuminating light can only exist when the Beloved is the kohl of the eye, where the Sheikh concludes with His name, glorifying the moment of union when the Beloved (the moon) slips in to steal the heart of the detached lover.
