Salvation Lies in Shedding Tears for the Arrival of the Beloved

This ghazal represents an epic in the “place of coloring and empowerment”; Where Sheikh Kamal, with his mystical insight, depicts how a hermitage (a place of worship) transforms into a tavern (Khrabat), and how love, with every breath, dons a new hue, stripping away the “blue rag of asceticism” to dye it the crimson of pure love.

English Translation

The power of your gaze has drawn me from the hermitage of asceticism (the hermit’s sanctuary) and piety, and led me astray. Lost in a daze, melting with longing, journeyed towards the gatherings of the masters of hearts and insight.

My blue Sufi cloak was once again stained with the red of Divine wine; for divine love, with every breath, clothes me in a garment of infinite manifestation.

For the perfect guide gave me to drink from the cup of love before offering it to others. And as soon as my cup was nearly empty, he brought me another overflowing with the light of union.

And every time I sipped from the wine of his love, my thirst grew to nourish my soul from his sweet lips; for this raging thirst is the sweetness and honey that increases my annihilation in Him.

My Beloved will return to me at dawn, melting with the wine of union. For the unseen messenger informed me in the solitude of dawn, bringing me this glad tiding.

For my tears flowed freely, scattering like plucked roses beneath the feet of my beloved. My tears did me a true favor, filling my lap with pearls instead of tears.

I implored the gentle breeze to bring me a trace of my captive heart, which had journeyed to my Beloved. And the fragrance of my beloved reached me, carrying with it the news of my life and soul.

My soul longed to taste the sweetness of that sugary mouth; but the sorrow of parting caused my heart to bleed instead.

And the sweetness of union, without your languid eyes, has left my soul in ruins, as the purest musk, without the fragrance of your hair, brings me nothing but pain.

For Kamal himself has become a wandering, melting, following the trail of the cupbearer’s eyes. Perhaps that sweet drink emanating from his honeyed lips will restore his life after death.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The contradiction of the “blue rag” (خرقه ازرق): Sheikh Kamal Khujandi refers to the state of “coloring”; The blue cloth represents the station of traditional asceticism and sobriety, and dyeing the cloth red (mi gulgun) signifies the seeker’s transition to the station of “spiritual intoxication/dissolution” and annihilation in Divine love, where the gnostic transcends the formalities of the material world to enter the realm of eternal meaning.

The station of “Pir Mughan” (پِيرِ مُغَان): Sheikh Kamal’s use of this shared symbol with Hafez Shirazi confirms his belonging to the “cycle of perfection,” where the “Pir” is not a physical person but rather the “guiding truth” that nourishes souls in the tavern of love before the creation of bodies (the covenant of “Am I not your Lord?”).

The allegory of “Mardumi Kardan” (مَرْدُمِى كَرْدَن): Sheikh Kamal excels in the use of derivations of the rhetorical style; So, when the tear generously bestowed its “mardami” (humanity/chivalry), it is a play on words with “mardum cheshm” (the pupil of the eye) that poured forth pearls. This combination of the elegance of the expression and the depth of its meaning is the essence of his Tabrizi school.

“The thirst of the sweet mouth” (lab chawn shakar): For Sheikh Kamal, “sweet lips” is the source of the sacred discourse (Logic of the heart), and when the soul asks for “chashni” (tasting), it is not answered with silence, but with “khoon jagger” (blood of the liver/sorrow of separation/blood of the heart/sorrow due to separation from the beloved); Because trials are the true training that tests the sincerity of the lover.

    Summary of Ghazal

Sheikh Kamal believes that the path to insight (the discerning) begins when the fortress of cold piety crumbles before the magic of love. Salvation lies not in concealing pain, but in shedding tears (pearls) to be scattered at the beloved’s feet, where he concludes by declaring himself captivated with the eternal cup, and the springs of the material world cannot quench his thirst, but he awaits a sip from the mouth of truth to deliver him from his bewilderment.
