This ghazal represents a unique mystical epic; here, Sheikh Kamal departs from his usual practice of limiting most of his ghazals to seven verses, pouring out the yearnings of his Mevlevi soul in eleven verses. In this gem, the Sheikh weaves a pure ecstasy, reaching the point of acknowledging that the world overflows with manifestations. However, the tragedy lies in the blindness of eyes to witnessing this light. He crowns his verses with a sublime tribute to our master Jalal al-Din Rumi and his holy sun (Shams al-Tabrizi).
English Translation
Indeed, the universe is filled with manifestations of the Supreme Being (the Truth, the Most High). And the path to it is clear and bright to every discerning person; but alas! We will die of thirst while standing on the edge of this deep sea overflowing with the water of life.
For he who sees nothing in the radiance of the sun of truth but the flame of its physical heat; so, O my heart, excuse him, and leave off blaming him, for it is because of the blindness of his soul that it is unable to receive the light.
So endure the bitterness and sorrow of separation, hoping for a breath of the fragrance of his reunion. How beautiful it is to endure the prick of thorns and the roughness of hard stone, for the sake of gathering the desired sweet dates.
For the threshold of sacred Divine love is very lofty, and its seeker must possess a firm resolve like that of Moses (PBUH), the one who spoke with God. For there is no way to ascend this Mount Sinai of manifestation without a noble spirit and lofty aspirations.
And if you take your ego and selfishness as your guide on this journey, you will stumble and fall repeatedly. Because your burden is like fragile glass (the heart), and your path is full of thorns and hard stones.
So, if you, O Sufi, aspire to know the science of letters and the secrets of the unseen, you must first refine your actions and rectify your conduct. For what good is reciting the sacred names and secrets if they are devoid of sincere action?
And how can the divine lover find peace of heart amidst the sway of his gaze and the strands of his hair? For every direction holds a fierce temptation for the lover, and every curl of his hair stirs turmoil and agitation in the heart.
By the light of the sun of his beauty, the souls of those who stay awake, who spend the nights yearning for his love, are illuminated. And from circling (clinging to the beloved like a moth to a flame) around his towering stature, like a cypress tree, the lovers’ status reached its utmost height and elevation.
And do not say that the elite of lovers have departed and that the sanctuary of love has become a desolate wasteland; The world is filled with manifestations of Shams al-Tabrizi at every moment, but where is the man who possesses a spirit like that of our master Jalal al-Din Rumi, to give his life for him?
For no soul can find refuge in a place of safety far from his eyes and the strands of his hair. For in every direction, the embers of love are ignited, and every home has become a table from which lovers drink to quench their longings.
O Kamal, if you were to reveal to those who are not of the truth (the strangers) the secrets of the dust of His threshold, it would be as if you were passing the kohl of insight over a blind eye, one that cannot see any visible light. So how then can the secrets of divine love be revealed?
Contextual and Mystical Notes
A Salute to “Mawlana Rumi” and “Shams Tabriz”: In the ninth verse, Sheikh Kamal Khujandi offers a lofty mystical testimony to “Jalal al-Din Rumi,” indicating that sacred beauty (Shams Tabriz) is manifest in every atom of existence. However, the problem lies not in the absence of manifestation, but in the rarity of the mortal lover like (Mawlana). He who knows how to receive this manifestation and dissolve into it, and this reflects the profound influence of the “Mawlawi School of Ecstasy and Dissolution” in shaping Sheikh Kamal’s ecstasy in Tabriz.
The paradox in “Thirst on the Riverbank”: Sheikh Kamal portrays the gnostic who experiences a state of “Tashneh Labi” (sacred thirst) despite standing on the very edge of Darya (riverbank/sea), and this means that although man is surrounded by the life-giving divine truth, he remains susceptible to spiritual thirst due to the veil of the ego (ba-khud hamsafar budan) that obscures his vision.
Critique of the hypocrisy of the “Sufi” and the triumph of action: In the sixth verse, the “doctrine of spiritual indifference” and the critique of the priesthood appear in Sheikh Kamal’s work. He directs a scathing speech to the Sufi who is preoccupied with pretense and studying “the science of letters” or the holy names in a formal manner, calling on him to purify his actions first; For him, spirituality is an action, not a word.
The secrets of “the kohl of insight” to others: The passage warns against revealing secrets to (the undeserving), for the dust of the threshold (khak dargah) is a symbol of witnessing knowledge, and when this dust is presented to one whose insight is blind, it only increases his blindness. Because truth requires an eye prepared for annihilation.
Summary of the Ghazal
In this ghazal, Sheikh Kamal Khajandi presents a hymn on “the sincerity of spiritual striving.” The obstacle is not in the clarity of truth, but in the blindness of cold minds to witnessing its light. He explains that ascending to the stage of love requires a resolve that rejects companionship with the ego, and that whoever he who loves Truth must be like “Mawlana Jalal al-Din Rumi,” who knew how to find his sun (Shams al-Din Tabrizi), guarding the secrets of this love from the eyes of the spiritually blind.
