The Secrets of Hearts are Divine Melodies that the Heedless cannot hear

In this sublime ghazal, Sheikh Saadi delves into the philosophy of “purifying the inner self” and “building the heart,” employing the language of mystical love to dismantle the trappings of outward religiosity and elevate the esoteric truths that transcend the calculations of the physical world.

English Translation

For ages, we have kept the secrets and hidden depths of our hearts concealed within the recesses of our chests. However, the hidden point of the secret has ultimately transcended the confines of the compass (the mind), which had restricted and imprisoned the heart within the limits of reason, preventing it from experiencing hidden love.

And if you claim that you’re a Muslim, my friend, how can you distinguish between your true sanctuary (place of worship) and your hidden belt (disbelief)? For lust is the fire-breathing ground (house of fire) of the soul, and desire and attachment to other things (this fleeting world) is the true belt (disbelief) tightened around the heart.

So cast a discerning glance upon yourself, O you whose heart was created to be a clear mirror reflecting jewels. For how long will you continue to veil the beauty of truth (Divine manifestation) and cover its radiant image behind the rust of sins and material attachments that have clouded your heart?

So grasp this small measure of truth: the spiritual angel will not cross the threshold of intellectual and mental solitude as long as the inscriptions of demons and greed remain etched upon the wall of the heart.

You will not attain true sovereignty over freedom, nor the soul’s independence from material possessions, unless you subdue both worlds (this life and the hereafter) to become your servants, relying on the dignity of your heart and its lofty spiritual capacity to relinquish them.

And in this context The material world, filled with false images, requires you to relinquish your share of worldly pleasures and fame so that you may dwell in the realm of certainty and realization, basking in the light of the heart.

But alas, your aspirations do not extend beyond preoccupation with earthly matters (material attachments) and fleeting material things. Therefore, I fear that the sublime story of the works of the heart (conduct, striving, and purification of the inner self) will find no echo or acceptance in your heart.

O Saadi, addressing the deaf with the truths of the science of music and melodies (the secrets and eternal discourse of the Most High) is a pure error. Therefore, one must possess a receptive ear (spirit/soul) that perceives and understands the secrets of Divine ecstasy hidden in the heart.

Contextual and Gnostic Notes

The compass and the point (noqta and porgur): a familiar geometric metaphor in Sufism; The compass draws the circle to represent the limits of the human mind, while the point at the center is the “secret of love.” The point’s departure from the circle signifies the overflowing of ecstasy, which transcends the stage of concealing the secrets of love, leading to annihilation.

The belt and the esoteric monastery: In Sufi literature, the belt زنار is a symbol of hidden polytheism and attachment to other than God. Sheikh Saadi asserts that the spiritual battle is not with outward appearances, but rather within the inside desire “fire temple” (Atashgah) of the soul, and self desire is the girdle that the servant tightens around his heart when he falls into the trap of self-centeredness.

The rust of the mirror (Zangar-e Del): Mystics see the human heart as a mirror created to reflect the beauty of Truth (Surat-e Haqq), but sins and material attachments accumulate like rust (Zangar), obscuring the vision. Purification and refinement are the polishing of this mirror so that the hidden light within it may shine forth.

The Work of Clay and the Work of the Heart (Kar-e Gil and Kar-e Del): Sheikh Saadi contrasts the concepts of “clay” (matter, the body, and heedlessness) and “the heart” (spirit, awakening, and knowledge). The aspirations of ordinary people do not extend beyond their physical construction, while the seeker is absorbed in the construction of the inner self through humility and submission.

The Science of Music and the Deaf: Here, music is a symbol of experiential truths and the science of knowledge, and the deaf one is the veiled one who moves according to the calculations of the intellect. The materialist is like a deaf person to whom the rules of melodies are explained, but this only increases his ignorance. For the “ear of the soul” (gosh-e jan) is essential to savor the melodies of union.

This Sermon means:

Human truth and spiritual sovereignty are contingent upon purifying the inner mirror from the rust of earthly attachments and desires, and attaining the station of true spiritual hearing. It is crucial in mystical practice and the purification of souls because it demonstrates that detachment from desires and selfishness is the sole key to achieving spiritual immortality. It affirms that the secrets of the heart are divine melodies inaccessible to the veiled, and their true nature is only perceived by living ears awakened by the light of certainty.
