Spiritual Independence: The Illuminated Soul and the Earthly Body

In this ghazal, Saeb reaches the pinnacle of his aesthetic philosophy known as “the strange meaning” (ma’na biganeh). The poem is a hymn to “spiritual independence,” where Saeb argues that true essences (whether spirits or poetic meanings) disdain being confined to narrow material molds. He uses his “delicate imagination” to demonstrate that the soul, enlightened by its essence, is separate from the body, just as the original meaning recoils from banal words.

The soul, illuminated by the light of divine truth, transcends the prison of the material body. Just like the unique pearl that—thanks to its ability to rotate and turn itself within the shell—remains separate within the rough shell, neither blending with it nor becoming an integral part of it.

Consider sugarcane; Although its joints (its nodes) separate its parts (because the reed is not a single, uniform piece, but rather cut into pieces/nodes), when it is squeezed, every drop of its nectar (the sweet liquid) dissolves into the sea of unity to become one indivisible entity.

And the veins of the afflicted (those who have pain in their bodies) are nothing but the strings of a musical instrument awaiting the instrument of fate (the scalpel of the phlebotomy that draws out the impure blood from them). The vein that has not tasted the agony of the cauterization of bloodletting (affliction) remains silent, unnoticed by anyone.

And the guardian of precious treasures (jewels) must possess awe and invincibility, so that no one dares to touch his treasures. Likewise, the sharp peak (the sword) cannot be separated from the mountain’s waist (meaning that the majesty of God Almighty is inseparable from the awe-inspiring majesty of divine glory).

And pristine beauty, unseen by the eye of a discerning and insightful person, is—without exaggeration—like the Holy Qur’an left forgotten above the threshold of neglect, its profound secrets beyond comprehension.

And the mountains and deserts have become too confining for me because of the limitations of reason and its proofs. Blessed is the wanderer who has freed himself from the need for proof and evidence, to wander alone in the sea of wonder and the depths of vision.

For he who does not bow his head to his knees to immerse himself in the sea of contemplation (thinking without needing proof from anyone) is like a precious gem that has fallen detached from its ring, its value lost and its enchanting beauty vanished.

And the secret of lovers’ success lies in surrendering one’s will and submitting (the lover’s submission to his beloved without question/answer, without proof). The hunting glove (the hood) of a falcon only fulfills its purpose if it remains securely fastened to the hunter’s waist (until the falcon returns to the hunter after completing its task). Similarly, the servant’s connection to God Almighty becomes stronger.

It is a mistake to seek affection and tenderness from this age of coldness; for in this world, even milk and sugar—despite being in the same cup—remain distinct from one another.

And the joy of song/melodies is amplified in the company of friends. Alas, for the lone partridge that lost its flock, remaining separated from the mountains of its companionship (birds of similar kind harmonize even when gathered together, and the one separated from the flock lives in solitude).

And rarely do you find the virtuous gathered in one assembly; for the chosen words (the elite of words) are written with scattered dots, making each letter stand out with its unique beauty.

And even the gathering of the wicked quickly disperses. The path of doubt (if doubt arises among the wicked, their bonds unravel; no one trusts the other, and they will surely scatter quickly) – if its points are scattered, it is no longer a cohesive knot, but rather a fragmented whole without any foundation.

Unless the heart (the heart of the lover for the Beloved/God) is tempered by the fire of love, it will remain merely a piece of flesh attached to the body. Do you not see that the unripe fruit clings to its leaves and does not become independent until it ripens?

O Sa’ib, the innovative (unusual, unfamiliar) meaning you have brought forth recoils in aversion from the familiar (common in your time) words, just as the essential/illuminated heart flees from the dross of the material (earthly) human body.

Contextual and mystical footnotes

The independence of meaning (ma’na biganeh): This concluding verse is considered a statement of “Sa’ib’s doctrine”; He believes that great poetry is that which contains meanings that transcend the surface of words, which critics call “creating content” (content-building).

Unity of Being in Nishkar: Saeb uses the metaphor of sugarcane to show that multiplicity (the individual element) is an external appearance, while the truth (sugar/spirit) is one when it is freed from its “shell.”

The Ripening of Fruits and Hearts: Saeb connects nature and the spirit; Maturity is the sole condition for achieving “spiritual independence,” and an immature heart remains merely a biological organ with no moral value.

Ghazal meaning

It alludes to the philosophy of “transcendence over matter” and the necessity of separating essence from appearance. The poem glorifies the conscious spirit and pristine meaning, employing an exquisite structure based on the “method of equation” (such as linking the fruit to the heart, and the pearl to the soul) to emphasize that beauty and truth reside only in souls and words liberated from the constraints of “mechanism” and repetition.
