The Lyre Player and the Treachery of Fate

In this sermon, Saadi plays on the strings of “perishability,” warning against the heart’s reliance on creatures/others, and likening the treachery of time to a musician’s embrace of his lyre; A facade of closeness, a hidden pain.

Alas! For the deep-rooted companionship of years, the old affection, and the familiarity between loved ones. For fate has placed between us the stone of separation, sealing the bridge of connection. (The inevitable fate separated the lovers without warning.)

No sooner do two friends enjoy a moment of peace or tranquility than the might of fate descends upon them with lightning speed (as Saadi described it: as if it were riding two horses at once), to disrupt the serenity of their union. (Fate separates them.)

For if fate and destiny are determined to forcibly tear hearts apart and sever ties and the covenants of affection between loved ones, in the end, bless to those who did not bind their hearts for love/affection from the beginning, and did not gamble with their love in the market of impermanence.

For there are a group of people (loved one) who have removed our love from their hearts and emptied their souls of our memory, while we, on the contrary, remain unable to empty our hearts of the memory of their affection or forget the covenant of their love.

We prepared every means of happiness and joy to be with those whose very breath brings us comfort, but the vicissitudes of time did not align with what we had built, nor did the winds blow as our souls desire.

Thus, Saadi refrained from frequenting gatherings of people and seeking companionship with them, ever since that day when he perceived with the eye of his insight the treachery of time (fate), and understood the deceptive methods of these fickle celestial bodies.

So if treacherous days embrace you as a musician embraces his lyre to play it tenderly, beware of being lulled into this outward embrace; For time (fate) does not strike your strings (to hurt you/to take you suddenly) except at the very moment when it deludes you into thinking it is embracing and comforting you.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

The Stone of Dispersion (Sang-e Tefreqeh): An ancient Persian metaphor; “dispersion” is the veil that lies between the seeker and stillness. Saadi sees time as “stoning” humanity with the stone of separation to remind it that permanence belongs to God alone.

Running with two horses (Do-esbeh-netakht): A violent, dynamic image; Fate does not move slowly, but rather strikes a person in moments of heedlessness and intimacy with strangers, with a speed that leaves no room for farewell.

The Lyre Metaphor (Ching): This verse is the gem of the sermon. The musician holds the lyre to his chest (Be Bar Kashidan) so that he can “strike/play it” (Zasht Zadan). Likewise, the world approaches a person with grace and kindness (Naawakhtan) only to inflict pain through loss and annihilation. The wise and discerning person is not deceived by the world’s “embrace” because he knows that it is the position of the “musician,” not the “lover.”

Abstraction (Pardakhtan Del): Saadi laments a spiritual paradox; Others have succeeded in “emptying” their hearts of us (complete detachment/detachment), while we remain captive to their love. This is a call for equality in “asceticism”: whoever departs from your heart, cease mentioning them.

This sermon means

The relying on the company of people and being content with the kindness of time is pure illusion and vanity, for the end of every connection with a human being is forced separation. It is important in spiritual and emotional education because it guides the seeker to the station of “detachment” and not gambling with the heart in the arenas of annihilation, eloquently affirming that the kindness of the world to the servant is like the embrace of a musician for his lyre. He only embraces it to play it (to make it sound), and true happiness lies in “severing attachment” before death severs it.
