This ghazal is a “hymn of return to the Covenant of Trust and the axis of pure Divine Oneness.” In it, Sheikh Saadi articulates a comprehensive spiritual pact, calling for liberation from the shackles of materialism—the “Abode of Perishability”—and urging a retreat to the “Abode of Healing” through sincere repentance. He describes humility at the threshold of Divine Majesty as the sole ladder to attaining human dignity and an elevation that transcends even the ranks of the angels.
English Translation
Arise and come forth; let us fulfill the Covenant of Trust and the primordial pact with which God has entrusted us. Let us redeem the shortcomings and heedlessness of days past through devoted service, turning back to Him in repentance, and humble supplication.
We were once heedless of this—acting without true awareness—when we bowed our heads in submission before the rest of creation. It is fitting, then, that we now erase this indignity and embrace pure humility solely at the threshold of Divine Majesty.
For the Abode of Perishability—this worldly life—is not worth the immense toil of constant renovation and construction; it is, inevitably, destined to pass away. So hasten and rush to build the Abode of Eternity—the Hereafter—within the vast expanse of the Divine Kingdom.
The door to the Abode of Healing—of repentance and forgiveness—remains wide open for the wayward; let us, then, heal the wounds of sin and transgression with the antidote of turning back to God and self-reform (rectifying our souls and curbing the self that commands evil).
For when a created being—whoever they may be—turns their face or heart away from God for any purpose or worldly distraction, it constitutes sheer shirk (polytheism). Pure, unadulterated Tawhid (Divine Oneness) manifests only when we cast aside all “others”—everything other than God—and turn our faces solely toward the Truth, Exalted be He.
Let us cast off the cloak of disobedience and rebellion against God, replacing it with the act of returning and repenting to Him. Let us bow our backs and heads in humble reverence within the sanctuary of worship, submission, and bowing—all for God alone.
How long shall these corrupt, vain thoughts and fleeting illusions assail us and take up residence in the exalted realm of the heart? And how long shall we leave the throne of the Beloved (God) vacant, allowing the enemy—capricious desire and Satan—to wreak havoc upon it?
If the highest station attained by the angels falls short of the rank of our human dignity, how then can we accept for ourselves the humiliation and disgrace of submitting to the devil of base desires?
For counterfeit silver—representing hypocrisy and deeds that are outwardly righteous yet inwardly corrupt—yields its possessor nothing but shame and ignominy. Rise, then, O discerning soul, and let us seek the alchemy of sincerity, which transforms the base copper of our existence into pure gold.
Indeed, steadfast dedication—girding one’s loins—in the sincere service of symbolic kings and sultans offers a surer path to salvation than wrapping oneself in the cloak of feigned asceticism while concealing sins behind a facade of righteousness.
O Saadi, the destitute person pleads for what he desires through supplication and entreaty, while the wealthy man purchases it with his own means; yet we—in the realm of ultimate truths—possess neither independent existence nor any claim to selfhood. Let us, therefore, lose ourselves in humble supplication—seeking only from God—through this prayer.
“O my God, take us by the hand and succor us with Your grace; for bestowing blessings and vast forgiveness befits the majesty of Your station, whereas all the shortcomings and transgressions our hands have committed befit only our own frailty and offenses.”
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
Fulfilling the Covenant of the Trust (‘Ahd-e-Amanat): A reference to the noble Quranic verse: “Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to bear it… and man undertook it.” Sheikh Saadi views the return to the state of servitude [to God] and repentance as the fulfillment of this unique spiritual obligation.
Humility at the Threshold of Divine Majesty (Farutani beh dar-e-Kibriya): Humility before fellow creatures for the sake of material gain is an act of baseness and weakness (bi-maghz—hollowness); conversely, humility before the Almighty Creator is the root of true elevation and the principle of liberation from all forms of worldly servitude.
Pure Monotheism and the Garment of Disobedience: Gnostics consider the heart’s turning toward anything other than God—in any matter—to be a form of “hidden polytheism” (shirk-e-khafi). Casting off the “garment of disobedience” and bowing the back in Ruku (genuflection) serve as a practical declaration of entry into the fortress of pure monotheism.
The Alchemy of Sincerity (Kimiya): In Sufi literature, “Alchemy” symbolizes love and sincerity. …pure sincerity; for the servant likens his deeds to adulterated silver—which brings only disgrace—whereas sincerity is the alchemy that transforms the servant’s base nature into a celestial essence.
Self-effacement in supplication and the vastness of forgiveness: Sheikh Saadi concludes with the station of negating all claims of self-merit and independent existence; for the servant enters Paradise not through his own deeds, but through the mercy of his Lord.
The wise distinction between what befits the “Lord” (divine bounties and forgiveness) and what befits the “servant” (shortcomings and errors) constitutes the very essence of Tawhid (Divine Oneness) and true servitude.
This Sermon means
Exalted human dignity manifests in honoring the primordial covenant of trust and sincerely directing oneself toward the Divine Essence, while relinquishing any claim based on one’s own deeds and relying instead on the vastness of Divine forgiveness and grace. This holds great significance for the path of spiritual wayfaring and the purification of the soul, as it liberates the servant from servitude to created beings and fleeting desires, guiding him instead toward cultivating the “Abode of Eternity.” It affirms that what truly matters is sincerity and humble brokenness at the threshold of Divine Majesty, not the mere embellishment of outward appearances with the trappings of superficial acts of worship.
