This ghazal is a chronicle of absolute detachment and sacred witnessing; therein, Sheikh Saadi transcends the boundaries of the outward veil and the motives of the self—even those concerning the bliss of Paradise or the dread of Hell—to establish the principles of pure detachment, proclaiming that the perfection of servitude lies in total surrender to the Divine’s eternal decree
English Translation
If, while You remain behind the unseen veil—that barrier separating us from the Divine Manifestation—we pour out the very blood of our hearts in longing and anguish for the encounter with You, then what overwhelming ecstasy and rapture would consume us were that veil lifted and the curtain drawn aside? What a profound resurrection of the spirit and surge of yearning we would experience in that realm of direct vision!
While others anxiously guard their souls and cling to their own self-interests, we tear our garments in yearning for Your call. Command whatever You will; we stand fully prepared to instantly lay down and sacrifice our lives for Your sake.
While the masses flee from trials and tribulations in search of immediate safety—unaware that we, in our intense yearning to meet You, live in the throes of longing for the Day of Resurrection, simply to be graced with the sight of You—
Our hearts, maddened by love for You, have become steadfast shields; we hold our lives in our palms as an offering, ready to sacrifice them at any moment. The scene clearly reveals that we do not flee from the arrows of divine trial; rather, we welcome them with complete contentment.
So, do not tempt us with the gardens of Paradise and their fleeting delights; We, the free lovers, seek not to cling to the skirts of the Houris; our true aim is the Divine Essence Itself, not mere bliss or reward.
Should You drive us to the prison of punishment and torment—to Hell—instead of granting us nearness to You and the vision we yearn for, the tears of brokenness and longing we shed would be so abundant that they would extinguish the fires of Hell entirely.
And since You—O God—have, within the mystery of Truth, blended the hues of beauty and ugliness according to Your decree, will, and fashioning, how could we possibly feign otherwise, fabricate falsehoods, or defy Your absolute, prevailing judgment?
O Saadi! For while personal striving and action possess their own strength and vigor, they can never—under any circumstances—rise to the level of conflict, contention, or opposition against the eternal decree and the irresistible Divine Will.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
(Pardeh va Shūr / The Veil and the Ecstasy): In the Sufi tradition, the “Veil” (hijāb) signifies anything that obstructs the servant from witnessing the Truth—whether it be the self or the material world. Sheikh Saadi holds that the mere hope of the veil being lifted induces a state of spiritual intoxication and an inner resurrection; how much more profound, then, must be the actual moment of union with the Beloved?
Detachment from Paradise and the Houris (Bāgh-e Ferdows va Hūr): Sheikh Saadi reiterates the great tenet of the Gnostics: that worshipping God out of desire for Paradise (with its houris and palaces) or fear of Hell is merely a transaction of the self. The Rind—the sincere lover—seeks God for His own sake; thus, Paradise is found in His presence, and Hell in His absence.
Extinguishing the Fires of Hell with Tears: An eloquent Gnostic metaphor; the tears of sincere, broken-hearted lovers—shed from the anguish of divine longing—extinguish the fires of Gehenna (Hell). For the light of love shines more brilliantly and powerfully than the scorching heat of physical torment.
Submission to the Eternal Decree (Hukm al-Azal): This refers to the pre-eternal divine decree and the primordial covenant with the Creator. Sheikh Saadi illustrates that all human endeavor and action remain limited and bound by the sovereignty of the Divine Will; true perfection lies in relinquishing one’s own volition and accepting whatever the Divine Pen has ordained.
This Sermon means
The ultimate goal of the sincere spiritual wayfarer is the Divine Essence itself—not the bliss of Paradise nor the fear of Hell. Perfection in servitude manifests as absolute submission to the Eternal Decree and contentment with Divine Destiny. This concept holds great significance for the path of spiritual realization and the purification of the soul, as it strips away the ego’s self-serving motives from acts of worship and elevates the servant to the station of “detachment and singularity.” It affirms that sincere love erases the illusions of resistance, leaving the Truth (al-Haqq) alone as the sole active force and the ultimate object of desire.
