This ghazal embodies a mystical epic centered on “rejoicing in affliction” and “dispensing with remedies.” With his spiritual insight, the Sheikh weaves a vision of how the Beloved’s sword transforms into an honor and a reward, and how the devoted lover—having freely surrendered his soul to his “Soul of Souls” (the Divine Truth)—rejects the medicines of physicians.
English Translation
Why do you freely and coquettishly let loose the strands of your heart-stealing tresses? In doing so, you constantly stir up turmoil and agitation in the hearts of all lovers.
And if hundreds of teachings regarding the etiquette of knocking at that sacred threshold are still insufficient for us to learn the proper way to knock—given that merely passing by it is considered an unforgivable error; How does the morning breeze dare to engage in such reckless movements—gently wafting through the beloved’s quarter—that ill befit the sanctity of that hallowed ground?
For the beloved’s quarter shall never be free of the dust of temptation and longing, even were the beloved to spend a lifetime sweeping the dust from its threshold with the tresses of his hair.
Day and night, upon your threshold, I drink nothing but the cup of pain; for the healing remedy found in the fair ones and their union remains forever beyond the reach of a destitute beggar like me.
Why grant my heart serenity, only for me to bestow it upon another? Do not consign me to material gifts; instead, surrender me to the ordeal of loving you—an ordeal that purifies my soul.
And should your sword strike me down, grant me but a single moment—before I perish at your hands, so that I kiss your arm and exact from it the blood-money for my spilled blood as a recompense supreme.
And tell the physicians not to apply any salve to Kamal’s soul; for having willingly surrendered his spirit to the “Soul of the Soul” (the Eternal Beloved), what need has he for medicine or cure?
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Station of Khūn-bahā (Blood-money for a Love-Slaying): Sheikh Kamal Khujandi excels in articulating the paradox where jurisprudence meets the realm of passionate love; In the path of love, the one slain seeks no material blood-money; rather, he regards the “price of blood” (khun-baha) as the kissing of the Beloved’s arm—the very arm that drew the sword. This witnessed annihilation is the true festival for the lover, who perceives his death at the hands of the Truth as eternal life.
The Jealousy of the Saba Breeze and the Breeze’s Audacity: The concept of “amorous jealousy” in the face of the sacred sanctuary recurs in Sheikh Kamal’s work. Even the Saba breeze—passing with a gentle motion across the Beloved’s threshold—is deemed by Sheikh Kamal to be audacious and guilty of “inappropriate movements,” for presence in the Realm of Divine Majesty demands absolute silence and stillness.
Seeking “Affliction” as a Rejection of “Bestowal”: The fifth verse embodies the essence of Gnosis (Irfan) for Sheikh Kamal; For those attuned to the spiritual realm, material bounty—or even comfort—is regarded as a “veil” that distracts one from the Bestower (God); hence, Sheikh Kamal implores for “affliction.” For affliction is the bond that ties the servant to his Master, preventing him from turning his gaze toward “others” (anything other than God).
Rejecting the medicines of “physicians” (surrender of the soul): Sheikh Kamal asserts that the pain of divine love cannot be cured by the remedies of worldly physicians; for when the soul surrenders itself to the Beloved—the “Soul of the Soul”—it transcends the dominion of the body, and seeking human medicine becomes a sign of deficiency in the station of “Perfection.”
Summary of the Ghazal
Sheikh Kamal affirms that the path of Truth demands total surrender and rejoicing in affliction. The dust from the Beloved’s threshold serves as kohl for the eye of inner insight, and the slaying of the ego at the hands of the Beloved represents the ultimate fulfillment of desire. He concludes by stating that Kamal—having entrusted his soul to its Creator—has risen above seeking healing from created beings, choosing instead to dwell in a state of bliss. The Eternal Healing
