This ghazal stands as a monumental critique of clericalism and hypocritical asceticism, while proclaiming a “doctrine of love and liberation.” With his mystical insight and biting Malamati irony, Sheikh Kamal portrays how the edifice of convention and superficial asceticism crumbles before the intoxication of true love.
Sheikh Kamal adheres to his signature structural form—the “seven mighty verses” (sab‘an shidad); he regards this number as the means by which the ghazal achieves its ultimate state of “perfection” and balance.
English Translation
Let the (superficial) ascetic enjoy—to his heart’s content—the wine of Paradise and the houris of eternity in the Hereafter (a material form of worship in this world, rewarded with material recompense in the next); For He has left behind in this abode—for those devoted lovers who are unencumbered and liberated from worldly shackles—the wine of Truth and the vision of the ever-present Divine Beauty (a truly spiritual worship, wherein the reward is spiritual: the contemplation of the Creator).
Do not remove the string of prayer beads adorning that Sufi who merely feigns asceticism; leave it hanging there, like a collar chafing the neck of the mere imitator—one whom outward forms have blinded to the essence of Truth.
For contrived thought, ritualistic remembrance, and lifeless, mechanical acts of devotion breed only disorder and distortion in the mind; so partake instead of the cup of Divine Love, and cast aside these corrupting obsessions.
And—to spite that self-admiring ascetic who merely plays the part—I shall quaff the wine of love from the Beloved’s cup. I shall thrust the glass kohl-rod into the eye of the envious one—not to adorn it, but to blind it to the purity of our souls.
Do not depart from the tavern of pure love, lest you vanish from the sight of the Perfect Guide; for the Gnostic Master—the Guide—bestows ceaseless spiritual care and sacred glances upon the sincere seeker on the path of Sufi love.
How astonishing! How did the watcher/the inspector and the governor fail to notice this Imam who leads our prayers—he who spent the mosque’s entire endowment to purchase the wine of love and serve it to those liberated from worldly attachments?
O Kamal, do not boast in vain of claims regarding the abundance of your worship and piety. For a single glance from the eyes of the beautiful—a manifestation of Divine Beauty—suffices to seduce a thousand worshippers and lead them astray from the path of their prayer niche.
Contextual and Gnostic Annotations
Critique of “Priesthood and Hypocrisy”: This ghazal stands as a striking example of the “Path of Love” (madhhab al-‘ishq), which transcends the material and formalistic aspects of imitative Sufism. Sheikh Kamal Khujandi describes the prayer beads a Sufi wears around his neck as a “necklace of glorification” (qiladat tasbih) that transforms into a shackle strangling the imitator; for such beads stray from the purity of the heart, falling instead into the trap of hypocrisy and outward posturing.
Symbolism of “Spending Mosque Endowments on Wine”: Sheikh Kamal employs a well-known form of Gnostic irony; The “Imam” who sells mosque endowments to purchase wine represents the spiritual wayfarer who casts aside all material conventions and institutions to acquire the “state of intoxication” and self-annihilation within Divine Love; this conception mirrors the audacity of Hafez and the Malamati poets of the era of perfection.
The Secret of the “Pir-e Moghan” and the Gaze of Divine Grace: In the fifth verse (cited in studies analyzing Kamal’s poetry), he affirms that the Maykada—the tavern of love—is the abode of Divine Grace. Here, the “Pir” (or Sheikh) possesses a “gaze” capable of rectifying the spiritual state of the sincere disciple—an allusion to the significance of the “spiritual companionship” for which Sheikh Kamal of Tabriz was renowned.
Nullifying the Boasting of Worship Before the “Gaze of the Idols”: Sheikh Kamal concludes with an established mystical truth—the worshiper who relies on the sheer volume of his acts of worship falls into the trap of laf-zadan (arrogance or empty posturing). Yet, when the Beauty of the Truth (the “Gaze of the Idols”) reveals itself, a single glance from that inspiring beauty suffices to eclipse the deeds of a thousand worshipers; thus, all may realize that attainment comes through Divine Grace and spiritual attraction, not through the intensity of dry, mechanical ascetic practices.
Summary of the Ghazal
In these exquisite verses, Sheikh Kamal declares that true love stands far removed from the hypocrisy of ascetics and the mere imitation of superficial Sufis. The sacred wine and the holy vision are the portion of those liberated from material attachments; Divine Grace descends from the eyes of the Perfect Guide within the tavern of love. Whoever beholds the beauty of the Divine Beloved realizes that any claim based on mere acts of worship is utterly futile, and that Divine attraction is the true crown of spiritual achievement.
