This ghazal represents an epic of “the subtlety of the art of letters and the sovereignty of spiritual destitution.” With his mystical insight and calligraphic elegance, the Sheikh weaves an image wherein the beloved’s delicate mouth embodies the letter Mim and their upright stature the letter Alif, crowning the poem with that famous Sufi phrase of divine supplication: “A boon for the sake of God, O King.”
English Translation
When a lock of your hair swayed and bowed in haughty grace, the wretched lover fell, struck down—helpless before a mere gentle breeze.
For untying a single knot from your coiled tresses is a daunting feat; Indeed, even the morning breeze, as it moves to undo the knots of your tresses, displays a delicacy and finesse akin to splitting a single hair.
Lift the hem of your garment from your beauty—like a rose—with playful grace; for this robe of beauty was tailored solely for your stately stature.
No one has ever walked the dust of your path without treading upon it with their very eyelashes; that is why zinc kohl seeks out the eyes, tracing the lingering traces of that sacred dust.
How could I—unlucky as I am—ever hope to secure the chance to behold you? I shall kiss your feet after greeting with “Welcome.”
For from that single glance—should the opportunity to see him—I possess enough insight to realize that the modesty in a lover’s eyes is his finest adornment and most beautiful attire.
Your delicate mouth, in its beauty, resembles the letter Mim مـ, and your upright stature mirrors the letter Alif آ; they were created solely to serve as sustenance for our souls and our sight.
Do not speak in front of me of the sweetness of lips; yet if you do, then bestow a little of that sweetness upon this wretched beggar as an act of mercy and generosity from you.
You once said that Kamal is the beggar who seeks refuge at our doorstep—and so he remains to this day. Bestow something upon him, then, for the love of God, O Sultan.
Contextual and Gnostic Annotations
The Symbolism of the Letters Mim and Alif in Calligraphy and Gnosis: Sheikh Kamal Khujandi employs the art of calligraphy that flourished during the Jalayirid era in Tabriz. The letter Mim alludes to the beloved’s mouth—so minute that it resembles an indivisible point (a symbol of hidden unity)—while the letter Alif refers to the beloved’s upright stature (a symbol of divinity and of turning away from all else).
The station of “Something for God’s sake, O King” (begging from kings): The Sufi phrase “Something for God’s sake” (shay’un lillah) is the cry of the divine faqir (spiritual mendicant) standing at the threshold of the “Sultan of Beauty.” Sheikh Kamal, who embodies the “Sultanate of Poverty,” feels no shame in being a gada (beggar) at the gate of the Truth (Al-Haqq)—for this very act of begging is the essence of honor and sovereignty.
The metaphor of tutiya (collyrium) and sweeping the path with eyelashes: Sheikh Kamal depicts the utmost state of brokenness and humility. The dust of the Divine Threshold (khāk-e rāh) possesses such sanctity that lovers sweep it with their eyelashes—an act that renders even kohl honored to serve as a servant to this very dust.
The delicacy of the “Saba breeze parting the hair”: Sheikh Kamal suggests that the celestial mysteries bound within the Beloved’s tresses require the utmost subtlety; indeed, the Saba breeze exercises such precision in parting the hair that it unravels those knots without causing the slightest harm.
Summary of the Ghazal
Sheikh Kamal holds that true love is grounded in reverence and modesty before Divine Beauty. The Beloved’s form is fashioned from primordial light, while his lips and stature embody the letters of Divine Manifestation (the Mim and the Alif). Sheikh Kamal concludes by stating that the Beloved’s acknowledgment of him as a beggar at His doorstep represents the ultimate sovereignty, as he appeals to Him—invoking the plea “for the sake of God”—to bestow upon him the grace of union.
