In this love poem, Saeb delves into the philosophy of “unity of existence” and breaking the veils of multiplicity, showing that the distinction between “the Kaaba and the temple” (the mosque and the idol temple) is nothing but a neglect of the “drink of unity,” and as is his custom in “creating the exquisite content” (the content of the poem), Saeb uses amazing sensory elements such as the magnet (electricity), the millstone, and the bubbles, to show that annihilation in the beloved (God) is like the annihilation of the wave in the sea; An inseparable inevitability
Those poignant melodies (the divine melody/the voice of love, a melody outwardly serene yet stirring inner madness) rob my wandering soul of tranquility (and drive me mad), detached from my reality, just as the details of this divine love’s story banish sleep from my eyelids.
Between us and the Beloved (God) there is no barrier (separating us) except moral obligation; The lantern (the glass/barrier) is what protects the candle’s flame (here, divine love) from consuming the moth (the lover). Were it not for this barrier, all would dissolve into the One.
The raging wave is never separate from the sea itself (the sea’s wave cannot be separated from the sea, for it is part of it, ever). So who possesses the power to separate the lover’s soul (the created being) from the essence of their Beloved/Soul of Souls (the Creator, exalted be He)?
In every place where hardness of heart exists amidst the harshness of time, whenever I see a hard stone, it becomes a cause of my madness/my separation from the balance of this world (in a harsh world, the weight of the rock drives the lover to mystical madness).
Previously, every grain of my dust was a mosque for worship, but divine love is now different; it has transformed the roots of every hair on my body into a temple (for the manifestations of divine beauty).
Despite the lover’s recklessness (without shame), his heart never ceases its relentless pursuit of his beloved, and he continues to chase after Him (God), just like a child (the innocent heart follows love without understanding), indistinguishable from one driven mad by love.
In the scales of destiny (divine decree), jewels and stones are equal; does the mill of existence differentiate between one grain and another (a metaphor for a mill that grinds grains, making no distinction between the grains it grinds, be they barley, wheat, etc.)?
Whoever seeks to build for himself an entity independent of the ocean of divine truth (as if building a house on water), his fate is to drown. Like the bubbles on the surface of the water that believe they have a home separate from the sea, in reality, they are nothing but fleeting air.
So, if you wish to be drawn by divine favor and grace, lighten the burden of your soul from the weight of this transient world. Don’t you see that amber (a precious substance) distinguish between straw and grain (Amber attracts delicate straw)? (Meaning that if a person succeeds in reaching the meaning of God’s truth, they will no longer be attached to things, no matter how valuable. When you are light and detached from your ego, divine grace will draw you in regardless of the apparent value of things.)
For he who differentiates between the Kaaba and the temple has overlooked the essence and reality of the drink of monotheism to God. He was deceived by the different shapes of the cups, thinking the drink itself was different (which distinguishes places of worship for God, from the perspective of true worship of God alone, as if the drink were different through the different cups, but in reality, the drink is one, there is no difference).
For the thread of my soul is torn with longing and turmoil whenever I see the comb, as if it separates strands of hair (as if the comb separates me from my Beloved, just as it separates hairs from one another).
Just as the trembling of water (the waves in the sea) does not cause it to relinquish its embrace of pearls, will the trembling of a hand ever separate me from the sacred cup of my Beloved?
Just as a wound cannot be separated from its mark, like a wave cannot be separated from water, so too do our provisions come with the stroke of a sword, making no distinction between anyone (the will of fate).
O Saeb, how can someone like you dwell within yourself, in a single valley? For you are that wild creature whose wildness is so profound that you build your dwelling far even from your own shadow.
Contextual and Gnostic Marginalia
Unity of Witness (Kaaba and Batkhanah): Here, Saeb embodies the highest meanings of spiritual tolerance, seeing the differences between religions and appearances as being like the difference between the outer “jaam” (cup), while the essence (drink) is one.
The Eloquence of Lightness (Sabk Kan): Saeb uses the simile of “electricity and straw” (verse 9) to say that only a light, unattached soul is capable of divine attraction.
Loneliness and Uniqueness (Sayeh): He concludes the poem with a surreal image; The poet who flees even from his own shadow is a metaphor for complete annihilation in the self, far removed from all manifestations of multiplicity and human companionship.
This verse by Sa’ib al-Tabrizi points to the interconnectedness of existence and the soul’s inability to separate from its divine origin. The poem portrays humanity as a wave in the sea or a bubble yearning for permanence, warning that the illusion of a home separate from God is, in reality, annihilation. A new style created by the poet, who conveys wisdom from abstract thought to astonishing sensory embodiment.
