The Yearning for Freedom is an Innate Desire in all Creatures

English Translation

Why do you close your eyes to that face that nurtures the soul (the Creator)? And how can a shining mirror hide its reflection from the one who polishes it?

Saib resorts to the “method of equivalence”; He likens the human heart to a “mirror” and God Almighty to a “polisher,” and turning away from divine manifestation is a kind of obstruction of the essence of the soul, which is only illuminated by the light of Truth.

So have some pride, for just as the pearl tears open the shell to release its essence, so too should tear open the shell of this mortal body to release the essence within you. Why, then, do you endure the blows of this unattended sea?

Sa’ib embodies the concept of “liberation from matter.” For him, the seashell is “the prison of the body,” and the world is “a turbulent sea.” He who does not break free from the cocoon of his ego remains vulnerable to the blows of fleeting trials.

The essence of the soul bursts forth from the stone, like a spark. Why do you place obstacles before yourself, as if they were knots piled one upon another?

Here, the meaning is embodied. Sa’ib sees that the yearning for freedom is an innate desire, even in inanimate objects, and that it is humankind, through its psychological attachments, that creates its own prison through the “knots” of hope and greed.

So, polish your heart with burning sighs; why beg for light from the moon and stars?

The station of “self-sufficiency,” for true light springs from within through striving (Ah Atshin), and seeking guidance in outward appearances is a loss of the inner essence.

And tear away the inscriptions engraved upon the essence, from within yourself; for why do you feed upon the blood of others, O poorly crafted sword (of poor substance)?

He employs the correct “technique of the heart”; He believes that pride in outward appearances (the inscriptions) leads to injustice and selfishness, and the call here is to abandon the illusory superiority that harms others.

The four narrow walls (the cage) are not a place to unfurl the sails of wings; if you possessed such power, why did you remain confined within the narrow confines of the boundless green dome (the sky)?

“Breaking the Familiar”; while people see the sky as vast, Sa’ib sees it as a “cage” for the celestial spirit. For the spirit was created for what lies beyond these two worlds, and contentment with material existence is a prison for ambition.

And as for the bold rue seed, the incense burner is like the narrowness of Hell; so why not ascend like the fragrance of oud, emerging from this fire?

Sa’ib connects burning with spiritual transformation, and pain (the brazier) should transform the density of a person into a subtlety (the scent of oud) that ascends towards the divine realm, not remain burning with resentment like rue.

You can be a lamp in the retreats of the spiritual; so why stifle your breath (hide your light) beneath the ashes?

A foundation for the philosophy of manifestation; where Sa’ib sees that the dormancy of the soul is a loss of divine grace, and that humankind is a luminous essence that must illuminate the path of others instead of surrendering to the ashes of heedlessness.

And the sun of auspicious fortune (fully awake for you) stands at your head; so why do you make yourself a companion of sleep, O dullard (who feels no pain)?

A cry for awakening from the length of hope, for Sa’ib uses the adjective “painless” as the harshest attribute associated with the dullard, because for Sa’ib, “pain” is the driving force of attainment, and sleep is the symbol of spiritual death.

So, Sa’ib, you are not worthy of the bitterness of the days of separation (you cannot bear the separation from the beloved). Why not sacrifice your life for the sake of that Beloved sweetness?

The conclusion of “Aesthetic Sacrifice,” where Sa’ib acknowledges his inability to endure and affirms that “giving one’s life” is the only price for salvation from the bitterness of separation from God Almighty.

Sufi and Gnostic Meanings

In this Ghazal, Sa’ib establishes the foundation for “the knowledge of modesty and aspiration”; For he sees that the truth is as near as can be (a sun at your pillow, shining upon you), but the servant’s heedlessness is the obstacle.

The concept of “polishing the heart with sighs” indicates that inner purification is a fiery act that consumes desires to reveal the light of the Self, and the critique of “the girdle of essence” points to the necessity of liberation from the last shackles of the ego. The mystical “spirituality” that may be admired for its unique beauty

A summary of Ghazal

It is a message of “aesthetic rebuke” to the soul content with less, where Sa’ib sees that man wrongs his being when he begs for light from the stars while he possesses the sun of sighs in his chest, and it is a hymn of “spiritual explosion”; Where the seeker must tear open the shell of habits to become a free pearl in the sea of truth.

Additional Information

Verse 1

These verses speak of pure love and the beloved’s ingratitude. The poet sincerely asks the beloved why they hide their beautiful face from him, as if they wish to conceal the radiant, clear mirror from his light and purity.

Concept and Context

The Spirit-Bright Face (Rukhsar Janparvar): A face that refreshes and purifies the soul (a metaphor for the beloved).

The Mirror: The mirror represents the beloved’s face, and the radiant one (who gives light to the mirror, polishes it) is the source of beauty. Hiding the mirror from the radiant one is utterly futile.

Ignoring: The beloved’s distance, indifference, and deprivation of seeing their face.

The main message of the verses:

Cheshmposhi: Saeb laments the beauty of his beloved, for the beloved should not conceal their beauty, and the futility of concealment (Bı-faydeh bodan پنهان‌کاری): as the beloved’s face is a clear mirror, and concealing it is like blocking light from the light itself, which is impossible and wrong.

The second verse:

This verse calls for enthusiasm, courage, and perseverance in facing difficulties.

The poet says that one must be courageous in the face of hardships and endure the vicissitudes of time without fear, like a seashell that splits open to reveal a pearl, for life is a raging sea without limits.

The main concepts of the verse:

Be jealous like a precious jewel (Gheerti kon chun gor): Be courageous and valuable like a pearl.

Jeeb sadaf ra chāk Be: Split open the shell to become a jewel; that is, to achieve perfection, you must endure hardship and suffering in your life.

Why do you accept blows from every direction in this fickle and stormy world, without resisting or revealing the essence of your being?

Third Verse

Even the smallest particles of life and existence (like a spark) try to break free from solid rock to reach freedom and light, so why are you so hard on yourself, frowning and making life bitter?

Meaning of Words and Symbols

Khardeh Jan: A tiny particle of life, or the soul, or the essence of existence.

Mi Jahd Az Sang Birun Chon Sharar: Like the spark that ignites from the impact of flint, the paradox here is that even the hardest and most rigid things (stones) yearn to emerge, move, and be free.

Gareh Bar Roy Yekdeger Zadan: This is a metaphor for lowering one’s head due to helplessness, a deep frown, a furrow of the brow, and a feeling of sadness.

The Main Meaning and Message of the Verse

Hope and Vitality in the World (Omid o Pouyaei dar Jahan): The poet indicates that in every atom of the universe, even within stone, there is a desire for life and freedom, and the world strives towards the light.

Malamat Ghamgarai o Sakhtgiri: The poet blames humanity for, despite all its passion for life in this world, The universe, it frowns constantly, it despairs, and it makes new knots in life’s problems.

The message of the verse is that one should let go of difficulties, abandon a rigid and complicated life, and live with openness and hope instead of a bewildered, frowning face.

Verse Four

This beautiful verse points to one of the most important spiritual and moral concepts: inner self-sufficiency, confidence, and self-esteem.

Meaning

If you can purify your heart and soul and illuminate your path with burning sighs and sincere pain, why look to the moon and stars for a little light and guidance?

Key Phrases and Terms

Siqli Kun: Cleaning, polishing, and removing rust (In ancient times, mirrors were polished to increase their shine)

Sineh (Del): In Sufi literature, the human heart is likened to a mirror that, when cleaned, reflects truth.

Ah Atshin: A reference to repentance, inner burning, melting away, sincere love, and nightly prayers emanating from the depths of the heart.

Darwiza: Supplication, begging, and seeking help from others in times of need.

Mah o Akhtar (Mah o Setareh): A metaphor for outward appearances, material things, influential people, or any source other than God and one’s inner self.

Main Concept and Message

Non-Need for Creation (Binyazi az Khalq): Saeb asks: Why rely on others (who have derived their light from others) to gain credibility, honor, or light?

Inner Power (Qudrat Darun): Man possesses a great capital called “the heart” and “inner burning/sighs.” If a person purifies himself through repentance and prayer, he himself becomes a source of light.

Critique of Dependence (Naqd Wabstegi): The moon and star in this verse symbolize those who do not possess their own light (for the moon derives its light from the sun). The poet criticizes dependence on these temporary sources.

Verse Five

This exquisite verse is symbolic, moral, and critical. In it, the poet uses the language of poetry to criticize the oppressors, the bloodthirsty, and the hypocrites.

Meaning

O wicked sword! Why do you spill and feed on the blood of the innocent? Rise up and remove the belt of disbelief you have tied around your waist, and abandon this work.

Key symbols and keywords in the verse:

The belt (zinnar): In the past, the belt was a belt that Christians or Zoroastrians in Islamic countries tied around their waists to identify themselves as Muslims. In Persian literature, wearing a belt symbolizes disbelief, hypocrisy, or attachment to material possessions.

The essence of the blade (Gohar-e Tigh): The fine ripples and lines seen on high-quality sword steel (such as Damascus steel) are called the “essence of the sword,” and Saeb likens these lines on the sword to a “belt.”

The belt of the essence of the sword (Zennar-e Gohar az Mian Khoyeshtan Parah Kardan): This refers to repentance, renouncing injustice, and abandoning one’s evil nature.

The blade of the inferior gem (Tigh-e Badgohar): The word “gem” means essence or nature, and it refers to the same lines on the steel of the sword. An inferior gem sword is a sword made of inferior steel and metaphorically symbolizes a person of a base, unjust, and cruel nature.

Eating people’s blood (Khon Mardom Khoddan): This refers to injustice, plunder, and harming others.

Main Concept and Message

In these verses, Saeb uses metaphor (simile) and addresses the sword, but the true listeners of this allegory are the oppressors, the tyrannical rulers, and the hard-hearted who usurp people’s rights and harm them to achieve their own personal interests.

The poet warns these people against removing these trappings of power, wealth, or even empty claims (the belt of jewels), and urges them to cease their cruel behavior and stop oppressing the innocent.

Verse Six

This verse, in simple terms, alludes to the concept of the limitations of the human soul in the world and is a call for liberation and higher thinking.

Key Word Meanings

Parafshani: flapping of wings, an attempt to fly, a reference to freedom and soaring.

Tarmi Akhdar: green roof, a reference to the sky and, more broadly, to the entire material world.

Tangana: a narrow and limited space.

Contextual Meaning of the Verse

Why are you trapped like a captive bird in the limited and enclosed space of this green sky (the world)? The confines of a cage with four walls are not a suitable place to spread your wings and soar freely.

General and Spiritual Meaning

In this verse, Saeb likens the entire material world and the heavens, despite their grandeur, to a small cage, or four walls, for the sublime human soul.

The poet’s message is that humanity should not be content with this transient, material world, for the soul is like a bird in the paradise of heaven, and this world is too confining for it to soar and reveal its true potential.

Literary Devices

Simile and Allusion: “A green bird” alludes to the heavens, which are likened to “the walls of a cage” and “confinement.”

Negative Question: At the end of the verse, the poet asks, “Why?” Its purpose is not to pose a question, but rather to rebuke and warn humanity against accepting this captivity.

Verse Seven

In Sufi and ethical literature, this verse condemns attachment to worldly things and calls for the liberation and elevation of the soul.

Meaning of the Verse

For the arrogant person (or the conceited beauty/conceited beauty), the world appears as a narrow, tormenting hell; so why not rise from this hell and save yourself as incense saves itself, through the smoke that rises like perfume?

Spand Shokh: “Spand” (or “esfand”) is a seed thrown into the fire to ward off the evil eye; it explodes with a sound. “Shokh” here means impudent, arrogant, or disturbed.

The poet likens the heedless or worldly person to an esfand that burns in the fire of this world, causing disturbance.

Majmar: A fire pit. In this verse, “majmar” is a metaphor for the world or the physical body.

The scent of incense (buy oud): When incense sticks fall into the fire, they burn but produce a fragrant aroma that rises upwards. Here, incense symbolizes the purity of the soul, good deeds, or the reality of human existence.

The main concept and message:

The world is like hell (dunya be mazabeh dozakh): Saeb likens the world to a narrow, blazing furnace. Those attached to these material things are consumed and destroyed in this fire, just as harmal burns.

A Call for Transcendence and Liberation (Da’wat bihi Ta’ali wa Raha’i): The poet asks, “Why isn’t your conduct like incense?” For although incense burns in the fire, it retains its value, transforms into a fragrant perfume, and ascends upwards (to heaven).

The Moral Conclusion (Natijegiri Ekhlaqi): The true message of the verses is that in the hardships and trials of this world, one should not be anxious and agitated, burning and perishing like harmal (esfand); rather, like incense, one should transcend these narrow and dark material concerns, achieve perfection, and direct one’s soul towards the higher realms.

Verse Eight

This verse carries a mystical and ethical theme, praising the existential value of humanity and criticizing unproductive isolation or the concealment of talents.

Isolation (Khalwat): A place of worship, seclusion. The Assembly of the Pure

The Spiritual Men (Rouhaniyan): Angels, the Pure, the Mystics, and those with compassionate hearts

The Illumination of the Spiritual Men’s Solitude: An indication of being a source of light, guidance, and warmth, and of lending credibility to the Assembly of the Pure.

Self-Control: Restraint, silence, stagnation, and isolation (here, an indication of wasting one’s life and concealing one’s talents).

Under the Ashes (Zir Khakster): An indication of obscurity, isolation, low status, and worthlessness.

Meaning of the Verse

You have the potential to be a source of light, warmth, and guidance for the Assembly of Angels and the Pure; so why, like a hidden fire, have you imprisoned your soul under the ashes of lethargy and stagnation, thus destroying yourself?

Main Meaning and Message of the Verse

In this verse, the poet addresses humanity (or his audience) with two important points:

Belief in the Greatness of Humanity (Bawer be Azmat) (Khwish): Man’s status is very high; he is capable of attaining a position from which even angels benefit, drawing light from his existence and considering him a source of light in their realm.

Criticism of Laziness and Isolation (Intiqad az Tanbali wa Anzwa): The poet criticizes man for choosing isolation, inaction, and despair, despite possessing great potential, like a hidden fire beneath the ashes, about to be extinguished. This is a call to action, self-confidence, and the discovery of latent talents.

Verse Nine

This verse serves as a warning and an admonition, urging the seizing of opportunities, spiritual awareness, and the avoidance of negligence.

Meaning

The sun of awakening, goodness, and blessing shines above your head (your bed); O heedless man, why do you still succumb to sleep and let opportunities slip away?

Aftab-i Dolat-e Bidar: Here, “awakening” signifies happiness, prosperity, goodness, and golden opportunities in life. Saeb likens this abundance and sustenance to the radiant sun, the awakening. And the shining one

The bed (pillow): The side of the bed or above the head of the sleeper. Wealth coming to the bed means that luck and happiness have arrived and are within your reach.

Painless (painless): A reference to a negligent, careless person who doesn’t care about growth, perfection, and truth.

To slumber in a bed: A reference to negligence, laziness, and wasting time.

Main Concept and Message

Reproach for Negligence/Serznesh Ghaflet: Saeb expresses his astonishment and regret at someone who chose to sleep and neglect the best possible time for growth (the sunrise of happiness or the period of youth and health), instead of being active and alert.

The Contrast Between Wakefulness and Sleep (Taqabil Bidari va Khwab): In this verse, there is a beautiful contrast between “awake wealth” and “the sleeping person.” The poet says that when the world and sustenance await you, it is shameful to slumber.

An Invitation to Seize Opportunities (Da’wat bih Ghanimt Shmardan Fursat-ha): The overall message of the verses is that great life opportunities are not permanent; When good fortune, spiritual awakening, or a favorable situation comes your way, you must be vigilant and seize it, not squander it by indulging in pleasures.

The Last Verse

This verse revolves around the idea of sacrifice for love and the bitterness of separation compared to the sweetness of union. The poet addresses himself (or the lover) reproachfully, asking: If you cannot bear the bitterness of the days of separation, why are you so stingy in offering your soul (your life) as a sacrifice for a beautiful moment of union with your beloved?

Niesti Saeb Harif Talkhii Ayam Hajar

Nisti: You are not
Harif: Capable of facing something, or resisting it, or an equal
Talkhii Ayam Hajar: The bitterness of the days of separation and distance

Meaning

O Saeb, you are not equal to the bitterness of the days of separation, nor can you bear this torment.

Jan Nemeysazi Nithar Sahbet Shekkar Chra?

Jan: Soul or life
Nithar Sakhtan: Sacrifice, or giving something as a ransom
Sahbat Shukr: A sweet moment of union, or intimate gatherings with the beloved (who is as sweet as sugar)
Chra?: Why? (A reproachful or urging question)

Meaning

Why then not give your soul and sacrifice your life as the price for gaining that sweet moment and union that is as sweet as sugar?

The philosophical and aesthetic idea in the verse

Saeb Tabrizi uses the technique of antithesis and contrast common in his poetry: the contrast between bitterness and sweetness: (Talkhī iyām hijr × Sahbat Shukr)

The love equation: The poet believes that as long as you cannot bear the bitterness of separation, it is logical and obligatory for you to give the most precious thing you possess (which is the soul/Jan) to reach the sweetness (union). He who flees the bitterness of separation must buy closeness at any price, even if the price is his life.
