In this Ghazal , Saadi weaves an epic in “consideration”; Where the veil is lifted from the reality of mortality and absolute equality in the depths of the ground, moving from the scene of dust and decaying bones to the scene of the soul seeking refuge in the shade of divine grace, leaving behind the claims of reason and good deeds.
English Translation
Many long years will pass, and generations will succeed one another upon the dust of our resting place, while this spring continues to flow, and the morning breezes come and go, unconcerned with our absence from this world.
For in this brief respite, which does not exceed five days (the life of this world is very short), how can a human being dare to tread upon the soil of those who came before him on this earth, with arrogance and pride, knowing that his fate will be the same, beneath the ground?
So, my friend, if you pass by the funeral of your enemy, beware of letting the pleasure of gloating over him overcome you. For the cup of death is never empty, and one day you will be led to that same scene, and the same fate will befall you.
And he who struts today, strutting about (dragging the hems of his robes in pride) in his finery and power, upon the face of this ground, his body will tomorrow turn to dust scattered by the winds, just as the dust rising from his finery does.
And the dust will penetrate the hollows of your bones, O bold soul, deluded by its pleasures, just as kohl settles (Tutia) at the bottom of the kohl container.
The world is nothing but a lowly companion, and a treacherous lover without loyalty, who does not honor a promise to a lover; Since parting from this world is inevitable, abandon all glittering companionship to free yourself from her grasp before you find yourself one of his victims.
This is the fate of the physical body you see before you, now imprisoned beneath the earth. But the greater question remains: when that cherished soul is freed from the prison of this body, what horizons will it seek?
The wise person does not rely on the shade of their good deeds, nor boast of their obedience, but rather, like Saadi, should seek refuge in the shade of divine grace, hoping for their Lord’s mercy, not for the merit of their actions.
O God, do not hold Your poor servant accountable for his sin, but rather take him by the hand out of Your mercy and grace. Your attributes are sealed with abundance and generosity, and from us have emerged errors and misdeeds.
Contextual and Gnostic Notes
The Eternity of Nature and the Mortality of human: Sheikh Saadi highlights the contrast between “water and wind” (the enduring elements) and “the body” (the transient attribute), to break the pride of the seeker.
The Station of the Five Days (Panj Roza): A central Qur’anic and Gnostic metaphor; For this worldly life, compared to eternity, is but “an hour of the day” or “five days,” in the language of Sheikh Saadi, and arrogance in this temporary realm is pure ignorance.
Dragging robes (Daman-e Kashan): In Persian culture, the wealthy and kings wore long robes that trailed behind them as a sign of affluence. Sheikh Saadi mocks this appearance, saying that the end is “dust” flying in the air.
The kohl container metaphor (Sarmedan): A striking visual image; The decayed bone becomes a void filled by dust, just as kohl powder fills the kohl container. The purpose is to remind us of the decomposition of matter.
The supremacy of grace over justice (the grace of God): Sheikh Saadi agrees with the mystics that “Paradise is attained through grace, not deeds.” Reliance on deeds is conceit, while seeking refuge in divine grace is true monotheism.
This Sermon means:
The inevitability of mortality and equality beneath the earth necessitates humility and the shedding of the burdens of pride and attachment to this treacherous world. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it transforms the seeker’s insight shifts from relying on “apparent deeds” to absolute reliance on “hidden divine grace,” affirming that true elevation begins with acknowledging one’s own poverty and human fallibility before divine perfection and generosity.
