The Beloved’s face removes the rust of Wises’ Hearts

This Ghazal represents an epic of “witnessed insight” in the face of “spiritual blindness,” where Sheikh Kamal, with his penetrating insight, illustrates how the face of the Beloved is a revelation to the eyes of the knowers, while the ascetic remains veiled by his intellect from witnessing this light.

English Translation

O you whose radiant countenance has become a revelation to the eyes gazing upon you with the longing of anticipation to see you; May God not grant this light any share to those who are not truly devoted to the Beloved, they’re only out of greed, those who have not tasted the sweetness of Your presence.

For the combination of Your beauty and Your grace has ignited longing in the souls of lovers, and has made the hearts of those with true insight (the knowers) places of utter dependence and supplication to You.

The ascetic who feigns asceticism averts his gaze from beholding Your true beauty, boasting of his worldly possessions (his mind, that which he possesses of religious knowledge and worldly understanding only, and for which he desires reward only in this world and the hereafter); these are the heedless (the outwardly pious), whose insights are blinded to the eye of truth.

Those heedless ones do not know if my eyes were permitted to see the passing of that Beloved, who is the spirit of the world, before us; We will spend our days in this fleeting world in joy and contentment, unconcerned with worldly gains or the rewards of the Hereafter.

Our souls have no desire to depart (to fly, to soar far away) from your doorstep; for what bird has found a verdant garden like yours would never yearn to fly far away.

I implore you, by that hardened heart, to fulfill your promise to us, but alas! So solemn oaths have no weight or value before the might of Your beauty and Majesty.

O my Beloved, bestow Your grace and show Your servant Kamal those beautiful appearances, and see for Yourself how he drinks the blood of his heart with love. Such a drink (a trial) is permissible (Halal) for one whose food, along with his favorite drink, has become a source of various forms of desires (love)/the accompanying food/appetizers).

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The Station of “Nigarani” (Anxious Waiting): Sheikh Kamal Khujandi affirms that the eye that does not await the manifestation of the Almighty Truth is an extinguished eye. This “light” is exclusive to those who are in love, and its supplication, “Mabada digaran ra” (it is not for others), means that the secret of witnessing is not revealed to others who have not purified themselves from materialistic vision.

Critique of “the asceticism of reason”: As Hafez Shirazi (a contemporary of Sheikh Kamal in Tabriz, and they were in contact at that time, Hafez being in Shiraz) did, Sheikh Kamal mocks the ascetic who “sells his reason/mind” (a “forsaken reason”). In Sheikh Kamal’s school, reason is a veil if it is concerned with seeking reward, while love is the true insight. He describes the ascetics as “blind of sight” (lacking insight/blind of heart) because they were preoccupied with the outer shell (asceticism for the sake of giving) rather than the core (seeing God Almighty, not seeking giving).

The allegory of “Gudharan” (the Maronites): Sheikh Kamal excels at manipulating the word “Guzaran”; The beloved is “Jan Jahan” (the spirit of existence), and its passing before the lover is what makes life “Khosh Guzaran-iem” (pleasant passing) in a world that is by nature “Guzaran” (vanishing/disappearing/passing). The gnostic here uses the transient (this world) to witness the eternal (the spirit of the world).

The symbolism of “Khun Khurdan” (drinking blood): In the concluding ghazal (section), Sheikh Kamal connects affliction with what is permissible. Drinking the blood of the heart here is “the annihilation of the soul,” and it is the true drink that intoxicates only the gnostics.

“Nuql Khuran” (those who eat appetizers) are those who find in the bitterness of longing is a pleasure that surpasses the pleasure of union.

Summary of Ghazal

This love poem represents a hymn to “stability in love.” Sheikh Kamal believes that the soul that has found the garden of truth does not seek escape. He prefers to remain on the threshold of the “world spirit,” enduring the pangs of longing, rising above the mind of the ascetic who sees only himself. For him, true triumph lies in this “light” that dwells in the eye gazing upon the face of the Beloved.
