Trials and Tribulations from the Beloved as a path to Freedom

True salvation lies not in comfort, but in supplication that makes the heart steadfast amidst this sacred trial

This Ghazal represents the epic of “love’s tribulation”; Where Sheikh Kamal, with his mystical insight, describes how the beloved’s features (linear features, moles, lips) transform into a “table of affliction” desired by the sincere lover, distinguishing between the asceticism of “fear and greed” and the love of “submission and annihilation.”

English Translation

O You whose facial hair (newly grown, a description of the beloved) has become fragrant flowers adorning the table of lovers’ trials, and whose black mole has become a target for the arrows of trials we yearn for,

The ruby of your smile has turned my heart into an organ full of blood; So, from the intensity of the pain of longing for you, I call it the source of affliction and the mine of misery.

While the self-admiring ascetic stands waiting, anticipating the bestowal (from the Beloved), the wretched lover remains, his gaze fixed, anticipating the places of affliction, seeking only the face of the Beloved, desiring neither reward nor bestowal.

And when the veil of your slender waist beckoned to me from that hidden place, I fell instantly in the depths and obscurity of affliction

Far from You, affliction becomes our inevitable fate, but in Your presence, we and affliction become one, for we cannot bear the overwhelming power of Your beauty (we need this affliction to behold You)

And how can I suppress the sighs of passion, when you draw from your eyelashes sword blades and spear points, ready to unleash affliction?

O Kamal, you have no other refuge but supplication, for fear of the magic of His eyes; perhaps supplication and entreaty alone will save you from the trials of this world, beset by the vicissitudes of affliction.

Contextual and Gnostic Footnotes

The Station of “Trial”: In the gnosis of Sheikh Kamal, “trial” is not a punishment, but rather a “table” (or feast) to which the elite of creation are invited. The lover “Nigran Bala” means he waits for Him eagerly because it is a sign of the Beloved’s satisfaction. This approach distinguishes between the gnostic who worships God for His own sake, and the ascetic who worships Him out of greed for “gift.”

The symbolism of “the line and the mole”: “The green” (the line) symbolizes the life of hearts through contemplation, while the “black mole” symbolizes the point of “mystical identity” at which minds are shattered. Therefore, he called it “Nishan Bala” because it draws souls towards annihilation.

The philosophy of “the slender waist”: In Sufi poetry, “Miyan” represents the “hidden secret” that cannot be perceived by the senses. When Kamal says, “So he was consumed by Miyan Bala,” he means being immersed in the unseen realm of the beloved, where all signs cease.

The allegory of “كان”: The sheikh uses a pun between “كان” (meaning metal) and “كان” (that which/that) to indicate that every pain emanating from the Beloved is, in its essence, a precious treasure.

Summary of Ghazal

Sheikh Kamal sees the path of love as a struggle with “beautiful affliction.” The beloved wages war against the lover with his eyelashes and features, not to kill him, but to annihilate him from himself. True salvation lies not in comfort, but in supplication that makes the heart steadfast amidst this sacred trial.
