Who is Lazy about working today, will be disappointed in the Hereafter

In this sublime text, Sheikh Saadi once again sheds his air of pretension to paint for us a majestic picture that blends the didactic sermon of “Al-Bustan” with the tenderness of heartfelt “Al-Ghazal,” depicting the autumn of life and the decline of strength, and calling upon the seeker to tread the path of self-sufficiency and to cling to the ropes of his sincere saints to cross from the depths of mortality to the expanse of eternity.

English Translation

O my friend, life is precious and valuable, so seize it as a great prize before it is too late, and snatch the ball of goodness (hasten to do righteous deeds), as much as you can, from the arena of this fleeting life, before fate folds you in.

And what will the days of worldly leadership and sovereignty? For the revolving sphere, despite its immense power and might (all its greatness), has decreed that its authority will have no lasting permanence (the inevitable fate).

For only God, the Most High, the Almighty, exalted above all others, possesses the eternal dominion, whose everlasting kingdom is unchanging and unaffected by decay.

Indeed, this life warrants weeping and sorrow. For it is like a smiling rosebud whose radiant beauty and permanence last only a few days (five days), then it withers.

For the treacherous mother of time (the material world) never nurses a child with a single drop of sweet milk without later staining its teeth with blood, bitterness, and pain (for every pleasure is followed by anguish).

And the truly fortunate one, blessed with guidance, is he who hastens today to heal his wounded and afflicted heart (through righteous deeds, drawing closer to God, and remembering God), for it is impossible to find a cure or remedy after the time has passed. Death and the Cessation of Deeds in This World

Whoever does not sow the seeds of righteous deeds and worship in the fertile soil of life’s winter (the rain, the good earth, in its season and time in this world), will remain disappointed and despairing of loss (on the Day of Resurrection), in the summer of the Hereafter (severe torment on the Day of Judgment according to one’s deeds).

If you are building a house to settle in and dwell there, this is a simple matter. But as for the transient abode of this world, do not occupy your limited life with beautifying its features, constructing it, and developing it, as long as you a wayfarer, when finally you will depart from it.

So cling to the footsteps of God’s saints and the true knowers (follow the example of the righteous and their path to reach the Truth, the Most High). Let neither fear nor anxiety enter your heart; for he who sat with Noah in his safe ark will not be concerned by the flood of destruction in this world.

For you possess the jewel of spiritual knowledge, and it is your most precious asset. What more profitable transaction in the trade of the soul could there be than to give up this fleeting existence in order to purchase the eternity of the everlasting Kingdom?

May the success, leadership, and wealth be yours forever. But if you look with the eye of truth and certainty, then true leadership, true wealth, and genuine dominion lie in a person concluding their life with a praiseworthy legacy upon their departure.

For Sa’di chose to offer counsel and impart words of wisdom to people, so how could he not? He is like one who carries the most fragrant musk in his pocket, unable to conceal its scent and aroma.

Contextual and Mystical Marginalia

The Ball of Goodness (گویِ خیر): A metaphor inspired by the polo game (چوگان وگوی), which was popular in the Persian royal courts. Sheikh Saadi portrays life as a playing field and goodness as a ball that must be struck quickly before time runs out and opportunities are withdrawn.

The Rosebud and the Five Days (پنج روز): The “smilking rosebud” symbolizes the beauty and freshness of youth. Mystics reiterate that the duration of this physical beauty is extremely short, like five days, and attachment to fleeting beauty is followed by withering and disappearance.

The Milk of the Mother of Time Made from Blood: A harsh image representing the vicissitudes of life. The world nurses its children with its fleeting pleasures (milk) only to withdraw their souls and comfort with pain and death (blood). There is no pure, unadulterated pleasure.

Sowing in winter for reaping in summer (Daneh Fashand): A traditional mystical representation; winter symbolizes the time of striving and arduous good deeds in this world, while summer symbolizes the time of manifestation, attainment, and rest in the hereafter. He who is lazy in working today will be disappointed tomorrow.

The Spiritual Ark of Noah (Kashti Noah): In Sufi thought, Noah is the “perfect guide” or “mentor sheikh” who protects seekers. The flood represents the trials of this world, hidden idolatry, and the desires of the lower self. Salvation lies in abandoning human planning and seeking refuge in the company of the saints.

The Alchemy of Exchange (Bedeh o Bostan): Sheikh Saadi calls on the seeker to use the “capital of knowledge” to purchase the “eternal state.” True trade is not with creation but with the Creator. Exchanging Annihilation for Eternity

The Involuntary Fragrance of Musk: A powerful metaphor illustrating the essence of the knower. Wisdom in the heart of the knower is not affectation or pretense, but rather a truth that overflows and emerges involuntarily, like the fragrance of musk. Silence in the face of truth is impossible for one whose inner being is filled with inspiration.

This sermon means:

The perfection of intellect and human sovereignty lies in realizing the transience of worldly power and seizing the opportunity of this temporary life to sow good deeds and seek refuge in the company of righteous saints to cross over to eternity. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it formulates for the seeker the principles of “self-sufficiency in God” and liberation from the shackles of fleeting desires, emphasizing that true glory for the servant lies in a good end, not in the splendor of the beginning, and that the true seeker is the one who He made the wisdom of the gnostics his vessel and detachment from worldly things his threshold to attain union.

Vocabulary for learning:

Omar Aziz: Precious/valuable life
Goy Kheir: Ball of goodness (a metaphor inspired by polo, meaning to take the initiative to do good deeds)
Duran Riast: The era of leadership or material sovereignty
Ghancheh Gol: A closed rosebud
Panj Rooz: Five days (a common mystical metaphor for the brevity of worldly life)
Mother of Time (a metaphor representing the fickle material world)
Muqbil: The fortunate/successful/accepted by God
Del Reesh: The wounded, grieving heart
Daneh Nafshand: Does not sow seeds
Dakhl: The actual yield or harvest
Imarat: Construction and building
Nishstan: Dwelling or settling
Gudhshtan: Crossing and traveling
Dast Dar Damn Zadan: Holding onto the hem The robe (a metaphor for spiritual devotion and emulation of the saints)
Eternal state: The lasting state/eternal kingdom
Mahmoud: Praised/praised (containing a clever allusion to the name “Mahmoud” of Ghazni in the context of servitude and kingship)
