Wisdom: the Abrogated Code (Superseded School/Doctrine)

In this first section of the first chapter, Khwaja Ubayd-i Zakani outlines the full parameters of the “superseded school” of wisdom; he explicitly quotes both the text and concepts from Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi’s Akhlaq-i Nasiri regarding the definitions of theoretical and practical wisdom, and then depicts the pinnacle of spiritual ascent and the “Perfect Human,” before concluding the section with a single, striking sentence: “Here ends the doctrine of the ancients and the sages!” Paving the Way for the Coming Shock in “The Chosen Doctrine”

English Translation

Regarding the definition of wisdom, the sages stated: “Wisdom is the perfection of the human soul in its two faculties: the theoretical (or cognitive) and the practical.

The theoretical faculty: involves learning the true nature of things as they are, and involves acquiring a psychological disposition—termed ‘character’ (or moral habit)—that enables one to perform virtuous (acceptable) actions and avoid reprehensible ones.”

In other words, the rational soul possesses two innate faculties, and its perfection depends on perfecting both: the theoretical faculty and the practical faculty.

The theoretical faculty is that which yearns to grasp knowledge and attain learning, thereby—driven by that yearning—achieving an understanding of things according to their true reality.

Thereafter, it’s honored to discern the true objective and the ultimate purpose—which constitutes the final end of all existence—thereby traversing, through the guidance of this knowledge, into the realm of Divine Oneness, even to the station of union with the Creator, Exalted and Hallowed be He. Thus, the heart finds serenity—”Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest”—and the dust of ambiguity and the rust of doubt are cleansed from the conscience and the mirror of the mind, just as the poet has said:

“Wherever certainty alights, conjecture and baseless surmise vanish.”

As for the practical faculty: it entails a person ordering and organizing their faculties and actions so that they align and harmonize with one another; thus, through this state of equilibrium, their character becomes pleasing and acceptable.

When such knowledge and the corresponding practice combine to this degree in an individual, it is fitting to call him a “Perfect Human” and a “Vicegerent of God,” and his station becomes the highest among humankind—just as the Truth—Exalted is He—has said: “He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever is granted wisdom has certainly been granted abundant good.”

Thus, upon parting from the body, his soul becomes prepared for abiding bliss, eternal happiness, and the reception of Divine Grace—as the poet said:

This is a magnificent felicity; yet who is there today who shall attain it?
Here ends the doctrine of the ancients and the sages—a doctrine now obsolete.
[i.e., no longer existing in our time, so that human still strives for it].

The Inner Meaning and Satirical Symbolism of This Passage

In this passage, the poet Ubayd Zakani employs the highest form of “rhetorical trap”:

A direct quotation from Nasir al-Din al-Tusi: The poet cites the definition of wisdom verbatim from the book Akhlaq-i Nasiri (The Ethics of Nasir) by Khwaja Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, thereby constructing a towering edifice of piety, philosophy, and the refinement of the soul, ultimately elevating the human being to the station of the “Perfect Human” and the “Vicegerent of God.”

The concluding shock (“Here ends the doctrine of the ancients تا اینجا مذهب قدما و حکماست”): After all this reverence for the realm of Divine Unity and Divine Emanation, the poet delivers a thunderbolt with a single sentence:

“Here ends the doctrine of the ancients and the sages.”

This implies that, in the eyes of the “nobles” and sultans of his era, all this spiritual and intellectual sublimity is nothing more than an “obsolete doctrine”—an antiquated superstition devoid of any remaining value.

Paving the way for the “Chosen Doctrine” in the realm of wisdom: The poet constructs this supreme ideal of wisdom so that in the next section, he proceeds to reveal the actual—that is, practical—”wisdom” of the Ashraf, as they declare:

That the soul dies with the death of the body;

[and that] the Resurrection, the Gathering, Paradise, and Hellfire are baseless notions;

Thereby deeming the blood and wealth of the people fair game, driven by greed and tyranny.
