English Translation

If only anything were in my hands, if only my free will were mine to hold,

time and the passing days would never stand against me.

And you—O you who are in my life, or rather, who are my very life:

How can the nights distance you from me, when you are a part of my being?

O hope of my lifetime, and my most cherished wish.

O secret depths of my soul, in my moments of playfulness and in my gravity.

Yet, despite my hopes and my intense longing,

I am terrified of building something, only for my destinies to demolish it.

The sea of your love has no turbulent waves or guiding shores,

while the love of others constantly fluctuates between low tide and high tide.

Whenever my eyes are asked about your painful absence,

my tears answer on their behalf, even if it is against my own will.

You reside in my heart, just like the very beat of my heart,

and your name is permanently etched, as constant as the fingerprints on my hands.

Explaining:

لو بيدي شي / لو هو الود ودي: “If only” here is an expression of longing for something unattainable; the lover declares his utter helplessness before the vicissitudes of time, wishing he possessed the power to bend the days to the desires of his faithful heart.

في حياتي، أو حياتي: A very skillful emotional and rhetorical shift; the lover begins by describing his beloved as “in his life” (a part of it), then immediately corrects himself, declaring that she is “his entire life” (his very identity and existence).

يا خفايا الروح في هزلي وجدي: “Secrets of the soul” are the deep secrets hidden in the heart; the juxtaposition of jest and seriousness (antithesis) expresses the constant and complete presence of the beloved in all the lover’s psychological fluctuations and circumstances.

خايف أبني شي وأقداري تهد: A dramatic and mystical portrayal of fate as a tempestuous force that demolishes all the castles of hope and dreams the lover builds, highlighting his complete surrender and existential fear of tragedy.

بحر حبك ما به أمواج وشواطئ: a stunning metaphor; it describes her love as an infinite, deep, and still ocean, without turbulence (waves) or harbor or end (shores) to which one can retreat. It is complete surrender and an eternal, sweet immersion.

بين جزر وبين مد: a brilliant comparison; the love of others is fickle and unstable like the daily ebb and flow of the tides, while her love is a constant and absolute space that knows no change or retreat.

ثابت مثل بصمات يدي: a powerful and authentic sensory image; a fingerprint is the eternal, individual identity that never fades or repeats itself throughout life, and the inscription of her name and love in his heart is as authentic and steadfast as his fingerprints.
