English Translation

No, oh no, you who are dearer to me than my own soul,

I care absolutely nothing for gossip and idle rumors.

No, it must either be continuous presence and union,

Or at least, never cutting off our precious letters.

No, if you happen to see, O wandering bird,

the one of flawless, complete beauty, tell her:

No, longing has completely overflowed within my chest,

while the critics and mockers amuse themselves with my pain.

No, your absence has gone on for far too long;

How I wish, my precious one—oh, how I wish,

that you would never stop sending your letters,

nor would you ever abandon or forget me.

No, and when your sweet reply finally reached me,

confirming that you still adore and love me,

no, whatever you say or command,

shall be accepted with absolute devotion on my head and eyes.

No, and the home has lit up with pure joy!

Rejoice, my heart! Rejoice, O beautiful night!

No, and praise be to God, my ultimate love is what I have beheld tonight.

Explaining:

“Ya Ba’d Rouhi” (O My Soul’s Desire): A Najdi and Gulf expression of profound sweetness and depth; it means, “O you whose place in my heart is so high that you come second only to my soul in importance, or that you are the very soul by which I live.”

“Al-Gal wal-Gil” (Al-Qal wal-Qil): Gossip, rumors, and the idle talk of those who try to separate lovers and sow doubt in their hearts.

“Al-Muwasal” (Connecting): Physical and spiritual connection, and the continuous encounter in which the pain of separation melts away.

“Qata’ al-Marasil” (Severing the Correspondence): The cessation of letters and messages. Correspondence is the last link that lovers rely on to resist the loneliness of absence; severing it means condemning the heart to emotional death.

“Ya Tayr Kamil al-Husn Gulla” (O Bird of Perfect Beauty): A Sufi and classical invocation addressed to a migratory bird, which the lover uses as a faithful messenger to convey his longings to “Kamil al-Husn” (the beloved who possesses all beauty).

الشوق فض بي: “Overflowed” in Nabataean Arabic means to exceed all bounds, to surpass patience and the ability to conceal; it signifies that the yearning has reached its peak and the heart can no longer hide it.

العواذل تسلّوا: The blamers and the envious take the lover’s tears and sleepless nights as fodder for amusement and gloating.

ماشي ع الراس والعين: A deeply rooted Eastern expression of absolute obedience and acceptance; whatever the beloved commands or requests is answered with love and longing, without question or hesitation.

أنورت يا دار: “Home” here refers to the dwelling; the illumination is metaphorical and spiritual, signifying that the corners of the house are filled with joy and light upon the arrival of the beloved’s message or their return.

The song “No, My Soul’s Desire” presents a philosophy of hope and clinging to the bonds of connection in absence, and a determination to safeguard love. The lover consciously rejects the gossip of slanderers (“I care nothing for idle talk”) and establishes the conditions for the relationship’s continuation with a warm, unspoken agreement:

Either a physical meeting (consistency) or maintaining a flow of letters (messengers). And when the satisfying reply arrives, carried by a bird to confirm fidelity, the darkness of the soul dissipates and joy fills the home, in a majestic spiritual celebration proclaiming the triumph of pure, noble love and its resilience against the storms of distance and despair.
