Accepting Divine Decree and Destiny and Submitting to the Lord’s will

If the acceptance of God does not precede the will of His servants, then the intercession of all the prophets will be of no avail

This Ghazal represents a profound exploration of the issue of “predestination” and the absolute authority of divine will. Saadi presents an existential perspective that holds that fundamental principles and essences are unaltered by accidents, and that divine foreknowledge is the pen that inscribed the destinies of creation before actions were even conceived.

English Translation

If the acceptance of God Almighty does not precede the will of His servants, then the intercession of all the prophets and messengers will be of no avail. For divine acceptance is the key to all salvation. (Whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them, even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive them.)

For the decree of the Most High Creator is bound by the swift and irrevocable command, “Be,” and it is. No human being can add a single letter to His decree, nor can they comment on His will.

Therefore, the stain that covered Pharaoh’s heart was not a mere rust that could be easily removed. Therefore, Moses’ miracle of the “white hand,” with all its radiant light, could not erase the deep-seated darkness in Pharaoh’s heart (And draw your hand to your side; it will come out white, without blemish, as another sign).

For Moses had called him to the path of Divine law, yet the door of success was not opened for him by God’s decree and predestination. So where could this wretched person turn face (where to go)? For God had veiled the sight of this poor soul from the truth, and then God commanded Moses to call Pharaoh to have insight and be guided.

And he whose destiny was Hell from eternity (God’s first decree), even if he were to coat his body with talc/mica (a fire-resistant mineral), the flames would seize him and engulf him more fiercely than wood soaked in oil.

For the divine pen has dried, with all that is destined, whether happiness or misery. So it is all the same, O son, whether you drink the bitter cup of wrath or are immersed in it with contentment, for what is destined cannot be escaped.

And before sin existed and before any worship was established, the destinies of all creatures were written on their foreheads. For this one, salvation is written; for that one, destruction is decreed.

And in the first, eternal decree, every person’s actions and pronouncements are known. For example, the bitter gourd tree will never yield sweet dates or ripe peaches, no matter how much you care for it.

So, no amount of adornment can beautify the ugliness of the essence, just as no one can erase the beauty of a beloved, radiant in appearance.

Can black skin (like that of a Black person) become white by washing it with water? Or does the white exterior (of the Roman person) become black in essence due to the influence of smoke?

O Saadi, do not yearn for a happiness not destined for you, for he who does not sow the seed of success in the field of destiny cannot reap the harvest.

For the Divine pen has decreed (or ordained by eternal destiny) all that is to come (from your creation until your death); Whether you accept or reject fate’s decree, what is destined for you will inevitably come to pass.

Contextual and Mystical Notes

Accidental and Intrinsic Rust (Zang-e Ariti): Saadi distinguishes between two types of “veil”: incidental rust, which is removed through repentance and purification, and intrinsic darkness, rooted in the essence (as in the case of Pharaoh). This alludes to the theological position that considers the Saadi to be blessed even in his mother’s womb.

White Hand (Yad-e Bayda): A metaphor for a miracle and guiding light. Saadi asserts that guidance is a purely divine act; if God does not will for the heart to see, even the miracles of the prophets will be of no avail.

The stone and the fire: Saadi uses “the stone” (a stone that was ground and coated to resist fire) to illustrate the futility of feigning piety for those destined for misfortune. Appearances cannot protect those whose inner selves are corrupt.

The myrtle tree (Derakht-e Moql): A physical example of inner necessity. Just as a plant follows its seed, so too does a person follow the innate nature with which they were created in the unseen realm.

The pen of destiny (qalam beh amadani raft): an expression signifying “submission to divine will.” This is not an invitation to complacency, but rather an invitation to peace of mind after striving, and to the understanding that the results are entrusted to the Lord of Lords.

This Sermon means:

That the will of God Almighty is the sole driving force of the universe, and that the essence of people and their destinies are subject to His foreknowledge and decree, which cannot be altered. It is important in spiritual and emotional development because it cultivates in the seeker the station of “contentment with the decrees of fate” and warns against relying on false appearances or being arrogant about one’s actions, emphasizing that success is purely a divine favor and that true righteousness lies in submission to the Creator’s judgment. With sincerity and certainty, for there is no escape from destiny except to destiny.
