O you who are so far away from home, I deeply miss your voice and your words.
Your travels have grown far too long, and not even a simple greeting of peace from you has reached me.
You promised me you would only be gone for two days, yet you have disappeared for years.
O my Lover, you know very well that a noble person’s promise is a binding debt.
Your light has vanished from the world of my existence.
Where is the sweet meeting of lovers, O you who have forgotten my promises?
My heart sighed in pain because of you, O elusive and unreliable one.
O my Lover, you know very well that a noble person’s promise is a binding debt.
May you return in safety, O dearest of all beloveds.
O ultimate joy of the promised meeting, O fragrant essence of love itself.
Fulfill our long-held hopes, O love of my years.
O my Lover, you know very well that a noble person’s promise is a binding debt.
This masterpiece embodies the highest degree of emotional nobility and beautiful patience. Despite the bitterness of betrayal and broken promises (“You told me two days, and you’ll be gone for years”), we find not a trace of anger or a desire for revenge in the lover’s language. Instead, we see him reminding his beloved with dignity and respect of the value of a sacred vow (“A free person’s promise is a debt”), then his heart overflows with sincere prayers for the traveler’s safety and well-being (“Return safely”). It is chaste love in its most sublime spiritual form, where waiting becomes a ritual of fidelity and a transcendence of emotional selfishness.
Explaining:
يا بعيد الدار: a poignant and eloquent poetic address; “home” here is not merely a dwelling, but a homeland and refuge. The address expresses the desolation of distance and the geographical separation that divides the two souls.
اوحشني كلامك: a very warm Gulf Hijazi expression that transcends mere literal “longing.” “Desolation” is the desolate and dark void left by the absence of the beloved’s voice, as if their words were the light that comforts the darkness of the soul.
طالت الأسفار: “Journeys” is the plural of “journey,” and the length of the journey is a metaphor for the loss of hope and the prolonged absence without clear justification.
وعد الحر دين: an authentic Bedouin and Arab proverb deeply rooted in history. It means that a noble and honorable person (a free man) considers their word and promises a sacred and binding covenant, like a debt on their neck that must be repaid. Its use here represents a broad reproach, but one expressed with utmost politeness and nobility.
يا ظنين: “Suspect” in Arabic refers to someone accused or suspected of wrongdoing. In the context of love, this is said to a beloved who is stingy with their affection, or who arouses doubt and suspicion with their infrequent messages and long absences, yet the heart remains attached to them.
يا هناء الموعود: “Bliss” is the pinnacle of happiness and comfort. The promised one is the lover who awaits the fulfillment of the promise, for meeting the beloved after absence is the reward and the anticipated bliss.
يا عطر المحبة: This is a powerful metaphor for the beloved; they are not merely a person, but rather the sweet trace and fragrant scent that fills the lover’s life with joy at the mere thought of them.
